David Ornstein reveals update on Arsenal’s managerial hunt

Mikel Arteta

Veteran BBC reporter and one of the most trusted sources for Arsenal news, David Ornstein has dropped a huge update on Arsenal’s search for a new manager.

His tweet states the North London club are “not close to appointing a new manager”, yet he mentions that “Arteta among names being considered”.

This is a complete contrast to what Arsenal shareholder, Darren has stated in his tweet that Arsenal have “a verbal agreement with the new forthcoming manager”. These conflicting statements only add to the suspense in these uncertain times.

The Arsenal shareholder did, however, confirm that Arsenal have “had discussions with Allegri and Arteta” who are becoming the two most likely candidates for the job.

Considering his wealth of experience in the Premier League and his technical understanding of what it means to be a player and recently a coach in English football, Mikel Arteta is surely a strong candidate for the job although he is still relatively unproven.

As well as being highly commended for his work as a coach at Manchester City, he was made Arsenal’s captain in the 2014/15 season and finished his 5-year spell at Arsenal in 2016. At the age of 36, he is still very young for a manager and would become the youngest manager in the Premier League. This begs the question: Is he ready for the job?

Massimiliano Allegri is a different candidate altogether, with a large amount of experience managing large clubs, most notably AC Milan and currently Juventus. With Juventus, he has won the Serie A title three times and the Copa Italia four times. His fast-paced style of play would surely fit the Gunners.

It must, however, be noted that many people doubt as to whether Allegri would be interested in taking over at Arsenal given the drop to Europa league. With Juventus he has been the runner-up in the Champions League twice now. This drop in status means he may require some convincing to join the North London club.

With conflicting reports coming in it is hard to tell who will end up at Arsenal but whoever it is, we know it will be extremely tough to follow on from Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal ready to trigger £57m release clause of Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski

Piotr Zielinski

Reports keep coming that Arsenal are showing heavy interest in signing young Napoli talent Piotr Zielinski, according to reports in Italian outlet tuttomercatoweb.

The Polish midfielder plays as a tenacious player who’s aggressive style of play would fit perfectly in Arsenal’s midfield that is otherwise known for a lack of strength.

The 23-year-old has quickly made a name for himself at Napoli, scoring 9 goals and assisting 3 times during his time at the club, alongside some impressive defensive displays.

The report further states that the North London club are ready to trigger the £57m release clause in his contract. Supposedly Napoli are keen to hold on to the young talent and will be offering him a new long-term contract shortly. Only time will tell which option he chooses.

After rising up through the international youth teams starting with the Under-15s, he made his international debut in 2013 and has played 31 games for Poland. He has become a regular for the country’s midfield.

Aaron Ramsey has had a brilliant season with over 20 goals created this season. Zielinski would most likely play alongside Ramsey as a supporting player. This would bolster the midfield moving forward, giving Arsenal the strength needed to play fast, attacking football.

Granit Xhaka has been struggling since joining Arsenal and may need the extra support in midfield. In many circumstances, it can be seen that Xhaka is playing as a sole defensive midfielder and there is often a huge amount of pressure on the player. Having another midfielder who is strong in both defence and attack would surely help Xhaka’s plays.

There is a lot of speculation now, but Arsene Wenger is renowned for bringing in young talent, so at the end of his tenure as a manager it would not be surprising for him to help bring in a bright young spark like Zielinski to help Arsenal regain the success that we’ve seen in past years.

Journalist who broke Aubameyang story claims Arsenal will move to sign this young star

Arsenal’s defence has been struggling for several seasons now, and after conceding 51 goals in the Premier League alone this season, changes are a necessity.

Matthijs de Ligt is only 18 years old and is already turning heads all over the footballing world. Regarded as one of the hottest young players in Europe, the Dutch centre-back has made his way into the Ajax first team as a key player and into the national squad.

Respected Journalist Kike Marin who broke the Aubameyang to Arsenal story has claimed that the North London club are in for the youngster along with other top clubs.

Here is the tweet:

According to TalkSport, Tottenham Hotspur have registered their interest and may be one of the first to make a bid for the player. With both Bayern Munich and Barcelona apparently showing interest, it may be a heated battle.

AFC Ajax have set the price of £53 million on the young talent which is arguably a show of his immense talent but also his importance at Ajax.

With Laurent Koscielny being ruled out for 6 months and Per Mertesacker retiring at the end of the season may mean it is the right time for a new young defender to come in and help the squad defensively.

The 20-year-old center back Konstantinos Mavrapanos has already proved a good signing however after his red card against Leicester it is obvious he needs some serious refinement before he is to be a key part of a Premier League defence.

De Ligt looks to be extremely promising and due to this many clubs are seeking to buy him in the summer, Arsenal will have to fight hard to scoop such a talent.

Given Arsenal will not be able to promise Champions League football to the young player it will be a very hard job for the incoming manager to secure his services. Especially with the likes of Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona all interested, it will not be easy to sign him.

For years Arsenal have been known for defensive problems and this young man may be the solution, the question lies in whether Arsenal can convince him they are the best option with such heavy competition against them.

Hector Bellerin confirms he will be an Arsenal player next season

Hector Bellerin in Training

Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin has ended the ongoing speculation over his future by reaffirming that he would stay put with the club next season.

The Spain international has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent weeks with the likes of Juventus and Manchester United associated with his signature.

However, in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Bellerin has no plans of leaving the Gunners anytime soon and he consider the club as his home.

He said: “I’ve got a long contract, I have been in London for a very long time, this is what I call my home right now.”

“There is nothing else I am thinking of, for the summer. We have the World Cup, I don’t know if I will be called up or not [to Spain], that is something we will need to wait and see.

“If I get given the chance then I will be really happy for it. Apart from that I am sure I will be coming back here next pre-season.”

Bellerin first broke into the Arsenal setup during the 2014/15 season where he took advantage of Mathieu Debuchy’s shoulder injury to make himself a regular.

In the season which followed, his consistent showing in the Premier League was rewarded with a place in the PFA Team of the Year but he has since failed to make much progress.

An ankle injury sustained in the north London derby against Spurs in November 2016 has been attributed to his struggles, as per Wenger, but he needs to put in more consistent performances in the future with a new manager set to be at the helm.

Bellerin missed the midweek away defeat at the hands of Leicester City but prior to that, he had one of his best games of the campaign as he bagged a couple of assists in a 5-0 triumph over Burnley.

The Spaniard is likely to start in Arsene Wenger’s farewell game at Huddersfield Town on Sunday and it will be interesting to see how the players fare following a wretched run of away from which has involved seven straight league defeats.

Arsenal will look to beat Premier League rivals in race to sign Wilfried Zaha

Wilfried Zaha

Various reports are coming in claiming that Arsenal are keeping tabs on Crystal Palace star, Wilfried Zaha. The Crystal Palace forward is potentially being targeted by Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal according to reports in Mirror.

The 25-year-old forward has had a good season given that Palace will finish in the lower half of the table. He is the second top scorer for Palace this season, scoring 8 goals in 28 appearances and won April’s Premier League Player of the Month award.

In 2016 Tottenham Hotspur had two bids rejected for the forward and are wanting to make a new bid once the transfer window is underway.

The player has said in the past that he is committed to playing at Crystal Palace but claimed he cannot confirm his future at the club if the ‘top 6’ teams start bidding for him.

Although Arsenal are very much in the race for the player, it is believed that a new manager must be in place before any talks start. This is so the player can fully understand his role at the club. Arsenal will surely be missing Arsene Wenger’s uncanny ability to secure young talent for brilliant prices in the summer.

Given his silky dribbling and sometimes ankle-breaking skills he would be a perfect player to support Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Both strikers are prolific as poachers but are often seen to struggle when there is a lack of support.

The former chairman of Crystal palace believes that the player is worth “£50million to £70million” and the club have stated they don’t want to sell him. His contract is currently running until 2022. With the Premier League’s elites all looking to buy him, his price will surely only rise higher.

While his signing would surely make next season’s Arsenal team much more prolific, many commentators are asking whether an attacking player is what the club needs after the signing of Aubameyang and Lacazette, many feel it would be more beneficial to provide a strong Center-Back or a Defensive midfielder instead.

Arsenal keen on making Norwich City starlet James Maddison first signing this summer

Arsenal are keen on making Championship player James Maddison their first signing this summer, according to reports in Birmingham Live.

The Norwich midfielder was named in the English Football League’s team of the season and their manager Daniel Farke described him as “outstanding”. Maddison has been a target for both Arsenal and Liverpool but it seems Arsenal are in the driving seat.

The 21-year-old English midfielder has been prolific and has created a stunning 26 goals this season through 15 goals and 11 assists. He has also been dangerous from set-pieces and has become Norwich’s set-piece taker at a very young age.

Maddison played for a brief time in Scotland at Aberdeen and has played in the English lower leagues with Coventry and now Norwich. These experiences have enabled him to become a tough, resilient midfield player with unmatched flair.

Of his time in Scotland, he said “I got kicked a lot up there” while discussing how being in the lower leagues have helped him develop as a strong player.

With an already robust midfield and Jack Wilshere reportedly signing a new long-term contract with Arsenal, it is hard to see where Maddison would fit in at Arsenal. It is likely that along with Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Maddison could be a regular substitute next season and a world-class player in the future.

With the return of Santi Cazorla, a brilliant season from Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere working his way back into the Arsenal squad and Granit Xhaka continuing to build himself into a strong presence on the pitch, many fans are asking whether we need a new midfielder, but it is always important to invest in players for the future.

Who the new manager is will have a massive impact on what transfers are carried out in this summer’s transfer window and we can only wait to see who is Arsene Wenger’s replacement before knowing what transfers will take place.

Aubameyang and Lacazette to start, 4-3-3 Predicted Arsenal lineup to face Huddersfield Town

Predicted Arsenal Line-up

Arsene Wenger will be managing Arsenal for one final time when they face Huddersfield Town in the Premier League this weekend. The Gunners have failed to secure a single point on the road in 2018 but they have their last chance to erase this streak this season in the manager’s farewell game.

Formation: 4-3-3

Lineup:

Petr Cech has been the Gunners’ first-choice for the league duties this term and the 35-year-old should retain his position between the sticks.

In defence, Wenger should call upon regulars Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal for the right and left-back spots respectively whilst Calum Chambers is a likely contender to start alongside Shkodran Mustafi at the heart of the backline.

In midfield, there may not be any changes from the Leicester defeat with Granit Xhaka, Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey keeping their places. Jack Wilshere has recently been absent owing to the birth of his daughter and it is unclear whether he would make the matchday squad.

Further forward, Alexandre Lacazette should return to the mix after being rested for the midweek game. The Frenchman is likely to lead the line with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan partnering him on the left and right side of the attack.

Prediction:

Huddersfield are likely to play with freedom after securing their league status in midweek and this may present goals for either side. Arsenal have not looked like winning on the road in 2018 and a draw would probably not be a bad result to erase the losing run.

Huddersfield Town 2-2 Arsenal

Gutsy Arsenal lose to Leicester as they continue dismal away form

Konstantinos Mavropanos

10-man Arsenal continued their losing streak away from home to Leicester City and are in danger of completing the season without a single away win this Calender year. A 3-1 win was slightly flattering For the foxes because for the majority of the game Arsenal were still in it. At 1-1 it was end to end stuff and the result could have simply gone either way.

The script no Arsenal fan wanted, began to unfold but it wasn’t the usual inept performance. In fact, it was a valiant effort under the circumstances, yet Leicester managed to take the lead as fate demanded. Then after only 15 minutes Kelechi Iheanacho was through on goal but was unceremoniously dragged over by the young Greek defender, Konstantinos Mavropanos.

It appeared the youngster tried to swap shirts before full time, giving the Leicester man a heaving tug to send him turf bound. This prompted a straight red card and the defender will reflect on an error of judgment that has interrupted a promising start to his fledgling Arsenal career.

He shouldn’t dwell on it too much because he has been a breath of fresh air in defence, looking extremely capable and confident. He should also be aware that some of the greats of Arsenal sides down the years have clocked up a collection of red cards in the heat of the battle and gone on to become legends like a certain Patrick Viera. If he does half as well, then he will be in good company.

Arsenal continued to attack despite the loss of a player in a key area and Aubameyang was rewarded with another goal from a delightful piece of skill from Maitland-Niles who is fast emerging as a jewel in the cabbage patch. In defence or midfield, the youngster has shown an abundance of energy and displays great ability and technique. He will surely be will be a major part of the new Arsenal revolution next season but one hopes in a central midfield role.

Mustafi was drafted in to provide cover for the absent Greek, which almost made things verge on the ridiculous. The German seems so poor and clueless at times you could be forgiven for thinking that he was a striker who has been converted to the unfamiliar position of defender. He seems to be constantly looking for others to solve the problem or is guilty of abandoning his teammates in the hope that an unexpected hurricane may take the ball away from the danger zone.

With the wind of change imminent, Mustafi himself may be blown many miles from North London in the earliest possible transfer opportunity. Arsenal could have nudged in front but like so many occasions this season, particularly away, the advantage was wasted because of a poor final product and indecision. To make matters worse Arsenal engaged in some ping pong defending which saw Leicester’s Demarai Gray take a tumble from the leg of Mkhitaryan.

I still don’t know if it was a penalty or not, the replays didn’t seem conclusive and without the ref having some sort of slo-mo, multi-angled vision, it would probably still be difficult to be certain. I’m not suggesting Gray dived but if you are showing your laces in the box in close proximity to an advancing player, you can expect the obvious.

Vardy converted from the spot and milked the applause. From that point, it appeared that whatever Arsenal had left in the tank evaporated. The deflated Gunners were still capable of salvaging something with Aubameyang at the other end but Mahrez, so often linked with the Gunners, killed the game off with an Arsenal style counter-attack.

It seemed a little harsh but football often dishes out injustices to the non deserving and Wenger must be looking forward to booking the taxi and plane tickets to end this particular spell of misery. It’s been one thing after another for the Frenchman and the ultimate insult at the end of his management. Arsenal weren’t terrible, far from it but they weren’t brilliant either. They were up against a Leicester side that are lucky to hold the League position they have. One that makes a game tough but are not exactly Manchester City.

Arsenal struggle mentally against these types of teams and capitulate far too easily for comfort. They seem incapable of holding on for a point. They regularly snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory and have a defence that crumbles like a stale digestive. Whoever comes in needs to reorganise and make three or four urgent acquisitions to make it function properly. Wenger’s claim that his team can challenge with a few additions is optimistic at best and I suspect there will be a few faces joining Mustafi on his travels.

Arsenal make contact with £25m-rated defender, PSG ready to sell

Arsenal have reportedly joined the hunt to sign Layvin Kurzawa from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

The France international had been of interest to both Tottenham and Chelsea in January but neither were able to negotiate a deal with Les Parisiens.

However, according to RMC Sport, the left-back will be allowed to leave Parc des Princes during the summer after having failed to earn regular gametime.

Kurzawa had been the first-choice left-back during the 2016/17 campaign but he has not enjoyed a similar run this term with Yuri Berchiche being preferred for nearly half of the Les Parisiens’ games.

As per RMC, the Gunners have joined the pursuit of the £25m-rated defender, who is seemingly keen on a fresh challenge in the summer.

Nacho Monreal, Sead Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have all featured on the left side of the Gunners’ backline this term but the former’s long-term future is likely to be in consideration.

The 32-year-old has just one year left on his existing deal and Kurzawa could be seen as a competitor to the Spaniard, considering Kolasinac has struggled to impress this term.

Meanwhile, Maitland-Niles has also shown plenty of promise in the position but his future is likely to lie at the heart of the midfield, where he produced a sublime performance versus Manchester United earlier this month.

Despite Arsene Wenger leaving, the club appear to have stepped up transfer discussions for new players ahead of the World Cup and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat seems to be playing a key role in the process.

Arsenal unofficially short list their candidates to replace Arsene Wenger

Every since Arsenal announced the departure of their long-serving manager Arsene Wenger, speculation has been rife about who will take over. The applicants have varied daily and have included assistant managers, assistant coaches and some of the World’s elite.

It now appears that after a number of meetings, the list of preferred candidates is complete, with Massimiliano Allegri as the established first choice. Antonio Conte is highly regarded and if he were available Arsenal are ready to make their move.

The Gunners hierarchy have kept tabs on the Italians situation at Chelsea for months.
If Roman Abramovich decides to dispense with yet another manager, it may trigger a complicated merry-go-round that may even see Allegri go to Chelsea, whilst Conte heads to the Emirates.

The safe card to both of those options failing is now known to be Carlo Ancelotti, who will take up the managers job if all else fails. This set of circumstances tie in with the end of the season in both Italy and England.

The North London club will now have an uncomfortable wait because the two managers have decided not to discuss their position until the season has concluded. Gazidis was hoping to name the incoming manager within days of Arsene Wenger’s departure but that now looks impossible.

Should Arsenal fail to convince Ancelotti to take the post or he is employed elsewhere in the meantime, the board may have to rely on Sven Mislintat to contact Julian Naglesmann, who is said to be the head of recruitment’s personal first choice.

Mislintat is in agreement with the choice of the other candidates because of their pedigree and although his opinion is highly valued, it appears that Ivan Gazidis has established those on the list. Gazidis is certainly less keen on Mikel Arteta after a number of fans questioned the wisdom of such an appointment.

It’s now understood that the CEO is looking to persuade the former Arsenal Captain to return as an assistant and it could be perfect if he linked up with Ancelloti for three or four seasons before progressing to the manager’s post.

It certainly makes more sense than throwing the Spaniard in at the deep end in the hope that some of the Guardiola Magic has rubbed off. There will be more twists in this saga in the next few weeks and it may be a mini-domino effect that results in the appointment.
Failure to secure a manager from the top candidates available may reflect just how far Arsenal have fallen in terms of stature.
