Arsenal will hold talks with Mikel Arteta today

Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta was seen as a wildcard when Arsenal started to look for a replacement for Arsene Wenger but after the original favourites including Max Allegri and Julian Nagelsmann ruled themselves out, Arteta looks to be the front-runner to be the new Arsenal manager.

Sky Sports reports Arsenal will be meeting Arteta to discuss his appointment as manager at Arsenal in the coming weeks.

Max Allegri ruled himself out of the job by saying “I’ll be at Juventus next year if they don’t sack me…” and the Director of Football at 1899 Hoffenheim confirmed Nagelsmann’s future, saying “Julian Nagelsmann will be our coach next season, 100 percent.”

The 36-year-old is currently an assistant coach at Manchester City and has been heavily praised for his work there.

Arsenal fans are responding very differently to the inexperienced manager with some fans viewing the ex-Arsenal captain as a risk that will pay off and others believing his lack of experience could take the club to new lows.

We asked one Arsenal fan, Yaseen, what he thought of Arteta joining the club as the manager and he said: “I really think he lacks the experience to take on a team that needs a complete re-shuffle” and that “it shouldn’t be his first job”

Another fan we asked, Harry, believes he is the right man for the job and said: “I like the idea of it… he has a good philosophy he wants to bring in. At this point a risk is needed”

His appointment would be a bold move for an otherwise conservative board at Arsenal. Some critics are claiming the board want greater control over direction the club is taking which they lacked under Wenger, meaning Arteta will have less power over Arsenal’s success or failure.

After Arsenal’s chairman, Sir Chips Keswick, was heavily booed at Arsene Wenger’s last home game it is clear that more board control is the last thing Arsenal fans want.

Only time will tell whether Arteta will even join Arsenal and whether he will be the manager that Arsenal need him to be. Whether he overcomes his inexperience and brings a fresh set of tactics or succumbs to his critics will depend hugely on the upcoming transfer window, so stay tuned.

Steve Bould delaying future decision, as Arsenal continue search for new boss

Arsenal Stadium

Former Arsenal defender, Steve Bould, has reportedly delayed his decision to extend his contract as the assistant manager awaits the managerial appointment, according to reports in Telegraph.

The club have confirmed a backroom clearout in the last 48 hours as they make way for the new manager to bring his own team into the club.

In the last week, Boro Primorac, Neil Banfield, fitness coach Tony Colbert, head physio Colin Lewin and goalkeeping coach Gerry Peyton have all followed Arsene Wenger out of the exit door.

It is reported that Bould and Jens Lehman have been offered to stay at the club, however both are yet to commit to the Gunners, with a move for managerial favourite Mikel Arteta potential impacting their future.

Something that may push Bould towards the Emirates exit door and arrive with his former team at the bet365 Stadium, as it looks increasingly likely that Paul Lambert will not lead Stoke into the Championship next season.

The attraction of becoming a manager with enough financial clout to return Stoke straight back to the Premier League would be an attractive option for many, should he be given the opportunity.

If he was to leave, a number of Arsenal fans on social media are already speculating his replacement.

Mikel Arteta’s friend and former Spanish international, Xabi Alonso, has been rumoured to be Arteta’s preferred number two with the Gunners fans set to welcome the former Liverpool star.

The serial winner, who has won the Champions League and World Cup trophies, will bring a new determination and a technical expertise to the coaching team.

He is currently undertaking a coaching course with Spanish Federation and will able to join Arsenal as soon as possible.

That is, if the current Manchester City coach is chosen to be one to lead Arsenal’s next chapter.

Napoli place £88m price tag on Arsenal target Kalidou Koulibaly

Arsenal are in desperate need of some new defensive talent, with Laurent Koscielny’s recent Achilles injury ruling him out for over six months and overall a very poor season defensively for the North London side, conceding a shocking 51 goals.

Senegalese center back Kalidou Koulibaly has been turning heads across Europe, showing excellent defensive talent and ending up a key player in Serie A’s Napoli side.

There have been reports linking the Arsenal to the defender for weeks now, but now in a recent report by the Mirror, his current team, Napoli, are placing a £88m price tag on the defender which seems very likely to throw Arsenal off the player.

With a depleted budget after failing to qualify for the Champions League for the second season in a row, this deal looks almost off the table unless the incoming manager can work some magic to turn it around.

Kalidou Koulibaly has been an integral part of Napoli’s defence in what has been a brilliant season for the Naples side, who are going to finish 2nd in Serie A, losing their exciting title challenge late in the season to the defending champions Juventus.

Hope is not all lost with several defenders remaining transfer options for the upcoming window including Caglar Soyuncu. The Turkish center back, who is only 21 years old but already the defender is showing himself to be a powerful presence on the pitch. Soyuncu is reportedly very close to signing for Arsenal from his current club Freiburg. The full article on Soyuncu is here.

It is absolutely imperative that Arsenal sign at least one world-class defender in the upcoming transfer window after the last season has seen Arsenal’s defence repeatedly fail under pressure with the club conceding an abysmal 51 goals in the Premier League alone.

Whether the deal for Koulibaly goes ahead or not, with a new manager and a complete overhaul of backroom staff, large transfers look very likely in the Summer, so stay tuned for more news.

Arsenal in talks with Layvin Kurzawa’s representatives, defender keen on Emirates move

Arsenal have reportedly contacted Layvin Kurzawa’s representatives to discuss about a move to the Emirates in the summer, according to the French outlet ‘RMC’(via Calciomercato).

The Gunners defensive frailties are well documented and Sven Mislintat is looking to reinforce Arsenal’s inconsistent defence with at least one, possibly two, new additions.

With Nacho Monreal’s long-term future at the club in question and reservations regarding Sead Kolasinac’s defensive abilities, the addition of the French Left Back may go some way to stabilising the fragile defence.

Injuries and retirement have reduced the available options further but it’s said that a major overhaul is planned in a number of areas, not just in defence. Tottenham and Chelsea tried and failed to sign French International Kurzawa in the January transfer window but are still thought to be interested.

Kurzawa(26) formerly of Monaco, has been told he’s free to leave the club in the upcoming window by the PSG for a fee upward of €25 million and the defender feels he’s future is in England. He is one of a number of defenders that are of interest to the north London club as they start the rebuilding process and announcements may follow after a manager is appointed.

The Gunners may have to act more decisively than that or run the risk of missing out on their targets, partly due to the added complication presented by the World Cup.

Wenger departed with quite possibly the worst defence of his entire reign and no matter how much he swapped personnel or varied the combinations, results were less than impressive.

These weaknesses have been evident for at least the last three or four seasons but have got progressively worse, culminating in the near embarrassment of not winning a single away game in 2018, until they beat Huddersfield by a solitary goal in Wenger’s last game.

With the club still unclear on the choice of its new head coach, the responsibility for adding to the squad will fall on Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat.

Alex Iwobi makes Nigeria’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad

alex_iwobi

Although he has showed in-different form throughout the season, Alex Iwobi has been selected in Nigeria’s provisional 30-man squad for the FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Nigerian Technical Director, Gernot Rohr, announced the selection yesterday (14 May) with the Arsenal forward joining Victor Moses, Kelechi Inhenacho and Wilfred Ndidi as fellow Premier League stars in the Super Eagles squad.

The squad will need to be cut by seven players before the deadline with the 22-year-old expected to hold his place on the plane to Russia, providing he doesn’t pick up an injury in the meantime.

He is seen as vital player for his country and his form in the qualifying campaign and previous friendlies has all but guaranteed his selection into the final squad.

Iwobi has joined fellow Arsenal players Mohamed Elneny, Joel Campbell and former stars Wojciech Szczesny, Carlos Vela and Nicklas Bendtner in the already announced provisional squads for the summer tournament.

Nigeria’s Chances

Nigeria find themselves in a difficult group alongside Croatia, Iceland and one of the favourites, Argentina.

However, the African team are in confident mood about advancing from their group after beating their South American opponents in a friendly staged in Krasnodar in November. The Gunners youth product took confidence from his performance, getting himself on the scoresheet twice in a 4-2 victory.

So much so, that Iwobi has confessed he has spoken of helping Nigeria to become the first African country to lift the golden trophy come 15 July in the Russian capital.

“Of course, we’ve mentioned it and talked about it so many times in training, on the coach, in the hotel room,” confessed to CNN when talking about the ambitions of the national team.

“But we will take it step by step. Our coach always reminds us that we’re not there yet. We need to prepare right. We’ve done well to get this far, so just be relaxed, be cool and wait for when the times comes.

“It’s always been a dream to play in the biggest competition and there’s no bigger competition than the World Cup to me.”

Arsenal in advanced talks to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Papastathopoulos

Arsenal are in advanced talks with Borussia Dortmund with regards to the transfer of center back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to reports in Di Marzio.

The North London club’s defence has been under serious scrutiny this season where they have conceded 51 goals, clearly not good enough for a club like Arsenal who’s invincible squad was known for its strong defence combined with a tough midfield.

The 29-year-old Greek defender has been with Borussia Dortmund since 2013 and has made 198 appearances for the German side, he was expected to cost a fee of €15M to €20M but after a becoming a key defender for the German giants his fee will most definitely have inflated to at least £25m.

The report states that Mikel Arteta is the front-runner to become the next Arsenal manager while he expects Sokratis Papastathopoulos to be the first signing of the post-Wenger era. The transfer fee will be around £17m(as per Metro).

The new Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat whose excellent relationship with players’ representatives across Europe would be of additional help in signing the Greek defender, who Mislintat previously signed during his time with Borussia Dortmund.

Despite scoring more goals than Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, It was this error-prone defense which cost the Gunners a valuable top-four spot for the second season running, leaving the North London side in the Europa league yet again.

With the transfer window opening on May 17th this season, Sven Mislintat will see strengthening the defence as his priority following a season which saw the Gunners concede just 5 fewer than the relegated West Brom side.

Per Mertersacker’s retirement, Laurent Koscielny’s Achilles injury, which leaves him out for at least 6 months, and Shkodran Mustafi’s inconsistent season will leave the Gunners short in central defence leaving the young trio of Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Mavropanos as their only recognised centre backs, with Nacho Monreal often moving out of his preferred fullback position to fill in at center back.

Çağlar Söyüncü of Freiburg, Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli and PSG full-back Layvin Kurzawa are the other defenders linked with a move to the Emirates this summer. West Brom captain Jonny Evans is another potential transfer, who Arsenal could sign for a bargain £3m after West Brom’s relegation to the Championship.

Hoffenheim’s director confirms Arsenal target Julian Nagelsmann will stay at the club

Julian Nagelsmann has been a revelation for 1899 Hoffenheim, taking the club out of relegation battle when he first joined to finishing 3rd in the Bundesliga this season. Being only 30, he is currently the youngest manager in the German league and his fresh managerial style has been sought after by teams across Europe.

Since Arsene Wenger’s emotional departure, the German manager has been heavily linked with a possible move to the Gunners but now it seems he is ruled out as an option.

The director of football at 1899 Hoffenheim, Alexander Rosen, said in an interview: “Julian Nagelsmann will be our coach next season, 100 percent.”

This seems to be fairly concrete evidence that the young manager will not be moving to London any time soon.

The young manager moving to Arsenal had been reported as very possible and he has been considered one of the front-runners for the job until now.

The possibility of Max Allegri taking Arsene Wenger’s position has been ruled out by the manager himself. In a statement tweeted by Fabrizio Romano he stated “I’ll be at Juventus next year, if they don’t sack me…” and given his success in winning the domestic double of the Coppa Italia and the Serie A title four times in a row the Italian manager has effectively told us he will be staying with Juventus.

With both Allegri and Nagelsmann dropping out off the race for the top spot at Arsenal it looks as if Mikel Arteta is almost definitely going to be the new Arsenal manager.

Considering his wealth of experience in the Premier League and his technical understanding of what it means to be a player and more recently a coach in the Premier League, the Spaniard may be more prepared for the job than many fans think.

I hold the belief that after 22 years of Arsene Wenger holding the reins at Arsenal the team may need a radical change, as recent form has shown. Mikel Arteta is a risky choice as a manager given his lack of experience, but maybe a risk is just what Arsenal need.

Arsenal close to agreement as betting is suspended on next manager

Mikel Arteta

The search for a new Arsenal manager has been filled with suspense and uncertainty. Replacing Arsene Wenger is a near impossible feat yet it seems as if the search may be over.

The Express reports that Bookmakers have suspended all betting on who will become the new Arsenal manager among reports that an agreement has already been reached with ex-Arsenal player, Mikel Arteta.

Alan Alger, a representative for Betway said: “After heightened betting activity this morning, running in line with reports that a deal is close, we’ve been forced to suspend betting on Mikel Arteta taking over as the Arsenal manager.”

This comes after Max Allegri ruled himself out of the job by saying “I’ll be at Juventus next year, if they don’t sack me…” after winning the domestic double yet again with the Italian giants.

Julian Nagelsmann was also one of the front-runners for the job, but in a statement by Alexander Rosen, the director of football at the manager’s club, 1899 Hoffenheim, he confirmed the young manager’s future, saying “Julian Nagelsmann will be our coach next season, 100 per cent.” This almost completely shuts down fan’s hope that the North London club will sign the innovative manager.

After various managers who were on the unofficial shortlist being ruled out for different reasons it leaves Mikel Arteta as the prime target for succeeding Arsene Wenger.

The independent wrote that the  “He is a modern head coach who has that connection, whose popularity should allow fans to rally around him once the season starts.”

Many fans are concerned about the 36 year old’s lack of experience having never managed a professional team but in my opinion, after 22 years of Arsene Wenger, Arsenal need a radical change. Mikel Arteta is that change.

‘Absolutely ridiculous, disgrace’, Fans vent their anger as Wilshere is axed from England squad

Jack Wilshere

Although it is yet to be formally announced, a number of news reports are confirming that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has not been included in Gareth Southgate’s England preliminary squad for the World Cup.

The midfielder has not been included for the summer tournament in Russia after the England manager preferred Fabian Delph and Ashley Young, who can operate in more positions than the 26-year-old offers.

The confirmation will come today afternoon when the list of 23 players will be announced, with the manager likely to explain those decisions in the scheduled press conference on Thursday.

There’s no indication whether he will be included as a back-up either. He has yet to feature for the Three Lions under Southgate, and while he was called up for the squad for the March friendlies against Italy and Holland, he was ruled out with a knee injury.

Fears of being injury-prone have been virtually dismissed this season, albeit for recent England withdrawal, with Wilshere making 20 Premier League appearances and contributing three assists and one goal in the process.

That latest season comes after a successful spell on loan at AFC Bournemouth, where he further dismissed any injury fears when he completed 29 appearances for the south coast side and re-emerged as an Arsenal favourite.

So much so, his performances for Arsenal has led to many fans calling for him to be made captain next year should he sign a new deal with the club, where he grew up and supported. One of the star performers in the Europa League campaign and the indifferent Premier League.

Fans Reaction

The exclusion has left a number of Arsenal and England fans not happy, branding the decision a ‘joke’ and even stated they will not support their national team this year.

‘Double standards’ claimed one social media user, especially if Adam Lallana is picked ahead of Wilshere, where he has been more on the sidelines in the last 24 months.

Supporters have claimed that the playmaker is the only potential midfielder in the squad who can open up defences and is the comfortable taking on opponents from deep positions.

The omission may be in Arsenal’s interest though as it will give Wilshere enough time to commit his future to the club, making sure the number ten remains in Arsenal colours next year.

Arsenal will use Raul Sanllehi to sign Jean-Michael Seri ahead of Manchester clubs

Jean-Michael Seri has been known to many Premier League scouts for several seasons, but now it looks as if Arsenal are leading the race to sign the Ivorian midfielder, ahead of Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool.

The 26-year-old central midfielder has been known to many fans for his remarkable ball control and creative style of play.

Making 42 appearances for the French side Nice this season, Seri has been an integral part of the team’s midfield, occasionally playing as a defensive midfielder but still scoring twice and creating 6 assists.

The player’s performance has not gone unnoticed, with reported interest from Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. With this hot race for the player’s signature, it will be hard for the Arsenal to attract the player given the player will want to play Champions League football next season.

Supposedly, the Gunner’s ‘secret weapon’ in signing the player is the new Head of Football Relations at the club, Raul Sanllehi. Sanllehi is reportedly very close with Seri’s agent after being very close to having the Midfielder sign for his previous club Barcelona according to the Mirror.

Sanllehi’s main job at the Catalan giants was to help agents and players in their discussions with the club. This has resulted in a close relationship between the player’s agent and the Arsenal’s new head of football relations. This news comes among the intense search for Arsenal’s new manager following the resignation of Arsene Wenger.

Given the current lack of manager at the North London club, it is unlikely negotiations will see much progression before a new boss is in charge at the club. We are still yet to know any concrete evidence of the many managers who could take the job, but the current favourites are Mikel Arteta, Julian Nagelsmann, Patrick Vieira and Luis Enrique after Max Allegri confirmed he will stay at Juventus next season.
