Evidence of Arsenal’s decline reflected in transfer snubs

Arsenal Stadium

If anyone needed reminding of just how far Arsenal have fallen behind in stature, they need only look at Liverpool’s recent success in the transfer market and persistent rumours of more significant additions.

Jurgen Klopp’s savvy purchase of Brazilian midfield talent Fabinho, from Monaco, is more proof that Arsenal are less likely to snap up the caliber of player to match their inflated ambitions. It’s said that the Merseyside team are now in prime position to sign Frenchman Nabil Fekir, a player who was on Arsenal’s radar for the majority of this season.

Liverpool’s failure to win the Champions League has apparently not damaged their ability to secure the services of the Worlds emerging football talent, whereas Arsenal appear to be struggling somewhat. Last time around, it was Thomas Lemar who managed to slip through the Gunners fingers. This time it’s the turn of Fabinho with yet another late bid.

It’s obvious that the impact of not qualifying for the Champions League has seriously hampered the North London club and even the appointment of Unai Emery has so far failed to attract key personnel. Add to this that the persuasive powers of Arsenal’s head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, appears to be unable to clinch the signatures of such talent and it would appear that the mountain Arsenal have to climb, just grew slightly taller.

It’s to be expected. When Arsenal were a serious threat to Ferguson’s United in the mid 90’s, a role at Arsenal was seen as a dream move but these days it has a degree of risk attached for ambitious young players who don’t want to fritter away three seasons of a short-lived career, waiting for success that may never come.

There’s no doubt that ‘Diamond Eye’ will unearth talent and bring them to north London but disappointingly, it may have to come from the level below the one that the top five clubs can draw upon. All of those clubs seem more attractive at this point in terms of their ability to challenge for top honours and they can obviously offer a far more attractive financial package.

Rumours that Arsenal only have £50 million to spend in this transfer window is hardly helping the cause. It’s not really a secret that Emery will have to sell before buying and it’s said that at least three or four players from the first team may make way for new acquisitions.

I prefer to think that Arsenal will eventually spend between £70 and £100 Million on the understanding that at least half the amount is offset against sales. Such was the way of Arsenal during the Wenger years and the former boss was extremely adept at balancing the books, something Emery will have to learn rather quickly.

Before we become too disillusioned by these failures, let’s consider the wealth of talent emerging from the academy and if handled correctly, two or three players could potentially be as good as any new signing Arsenal could potentially make elsewhere.
In particular, Maitland-Niles would seem the most likely to emerge for a season long run but Reiss Nelson is also knocking loudly on the door.

Emery and Mislintat have already been in discussion about a group of academy players, of which Mislintat has observed closely since his arrival. It’s said that he has made suggestions to the coach and that both will work closely to develop the talent at Arsenal’s disposal, a complete contrast to the relationship between the German and the former Arsenal boss. It may be a difficult few months ahead in the transfer market but Arsenal’s head of recruitment has contacts around the globe and he is not adverse to flying off at a moments notice to pursue the right player.

Agent due in London to hold Arsenal talks for Ever Banega

Unai Emery

New Arsenal manager Unai Emery is reportedly interested in bringing Argentinian International Ever Banega to Arsenal this summer, according to Gazza Mercato.

The transfer looks to be worth an estimated €12m(£10m), which would be a considerable chunk out of the North London side’s budget, which is only estimated to be around £50m after two seasons finishing outside the top 4 in the Premier League.

Emery worked with Banega for several years at Sevilla, winning the Europa League twice with the player before making the move to North London.

The report states that Banega’s agent Marcelo Simonian is now due to travel from Rome to London to hold talks with Arsenal over a potential deal for Banega.

The midfielder is 29 and has made an impressive 62 appearances for the competitive Argentinian national team, most recently playing against Iceland in the 1-1 draw in Russia.

Banega is an integral part of Sevilla’s squad, playing a massive 50 games this season, scoring 5 goals and creating 6 assists for the club. As well as being an important player in attack, the Argentine has proved more than competent in defence, having played as a Central midfielder, Attacking midfielder and a defensive midfielder over the course of the season.

With it looking more and more likely that Emery will bring in Greek center back Sokratis, many fans are asking how the new manager will balance the books.

With Jack Wilshere looking to leave on a free transfer this summer, it is unclear which Arsenal players will be sold this summer, but Shkodran Mustafi and Petr Cech look to be among the most likely to go.

In uncertain times for the Gunners, signing Banega could give a solidity to the team that a players like Santi Cazorla or Cesc Fabregas used to give, with a wealth of experience and a versatile style of play guaranteeing consistent performances over the season ahead.

Jack Wilshere confirms he will leave Arsenal this summer

Jack Wilshere

England international Jack Wilshere has confirmed that he will be leaving Arsenal when his contract concludes at the end of the month. The North London club have also officially announced the news on their website.

The 26-year-old has been tipped to leave the Gunners over the past few weeks and the midfielder has now personally taken to his Instagram account to confirm the decision.

In his post, Wilshere revealed that he had held a meeting with new manager Unai Emery regarding his future but the failure to receive assurances over regular gametime is said to have influenced the decision to leave the club.

Wilshere had struggled with injuries over the past few years but he has certainly laid a mark with the Gunners with his excellent commitment on the playing field.

Under ex-boss Arsene Wenger last term, there were signs that he could extend his long-term stay with the club but things have genuinely changed ever since with Emery bringing a different perspective to his management.

As things stand, the Gunners do not have a replacement in place for Wilshere but based on recent reports, the club are seemingly close to wrapping up the signature of Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira.

The Uruguay international is currently at the summer World Cup in Russia and the Gunners are nevertheless keen on securing a preliminary agreement with the Serie A outfit.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are yet to resolve the future of Aaron Ramsey whose deal expires in a year’s time but there is a sense of optimism around the club that the Welshman will extend his stay upon his arrival for the pre-season

Club president appears to confirm Arsenal have agreed Lucas Torreira deal

Lucas Torreira

Arsenal’s pursuit of Lucas Torreira has been going around the news cycle for some time now and that deal seems to be done and dusted finally.

The president of Sampdoria has confirmed that the player has signed for the Gunners, according to reports in the Metro: In an interview, he said:

“Torreira has left for €30million, I bought him from Pescara when nobody believed in him. We took a gamble on him and we won, paying just €3million. The money that comes in will be used to capitalise the company.”

This is confirmation of the news that fans had gotten earlier and it proves that Arsenal are looking to be ruthless in the transfer market.

Torreira is part of the Uruguay team at the World Cup and that is the only reason that has prevented the club from announcing the deal.

His signing will be particularly useful as the Gunners midfield has had some notable departures in the recent past. Torreira and his aggressive pressing will certainly fit into the vision that Unai Emery has for the team and, he will complement the abilities of Granit Xhaka as well. And to add to this, his ability to pass into dangerous areas makes him a very interesting proposition to deal with.

When the deal is made official, Torreira will become the third player to be confirmed to join the Gunners after the signings of full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner and goalkeeper Bernd Leno. As far as fans are concerned, it is refreshing to see Arsenal behave this way in the transfer market.

For the price that he is coming at, Torreira is great value for money as his potential is very high and the fact that he is young means that he can succeed at the club for many years to come.

The fact that the player is at the World Cup is an indication of the quality that he possesses and for those who want a quick glimpse of him, be sure to check out Uruguay’s match against Saudi Arabia.

Confirmed: Arsenal officially announce Bernd Leno signing

Bernd Leno

It’s finally done. Arsenal have officially announced that Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno has signed for the club, as per Gunners official website.

The 26-year-old has been the starting keeper for Leverkusen for several seasons now, making 38 appearances this season.

Leno has reportedly joined for a fee of around £20million and has signed a long-term contract, thought to be 5 years long.

As well as being a well-known player in the Bundesliga, Leno has earned 6 caps for Germany, fighting Manuel Neuer for the top spot in the International side.

Reports have been linking the goalkeeper with a transfer to the North London club for several seasons now, and fans will be relieved now the deal has finally been announced. After a mixed season for Petr Cech, a new goalkeeper was seen as a vital signing for new manager Emery

With Leno coming in to the side, it is expected that Petr Cech could soon leave the club. A player with a career like Cech’s will definitely not want to sit on the bench for the last few seasons of his playing years and it is believed that he would rather seek first team football elsewhere.

It is currently being reported that Cech is favoring a move to Italian side Napoli, according to the Daily Star, a transfer for Cech could bring in much-needed funds for the ambitious transfer window Emery and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat seem to be expecting.

With signings of Sokratis and Caglar looking more and more promising, and Soyuncu telling his agent to complete the move to North London.

With an already formidable attack including Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, It is believed Emery will be focusing on getting a solid defence up and running as a base to establish a title challenge next season.

Bernd Leno deal agreed, Medical next: David Ornstein confirms Arsenal are close

Bernd Leno

It is no secret that Arsenal are in the market for a goalkeeper after Petr Cech had a very disappointing season.

The search has led to a player to replace the veteran in the form of German keeper Bernd Leno. BBC Journalist David Ornstein has all but confirmed the deal. He said:

“Fee agreed between Arsenal & Bayer Leverkusen – Leno still needs to undergo a medical before can complete the signing, for a reported €22m (£19.2m)”

This is a continuation of what Ornstein had said a few days ago regarding Leno. All this is very encouraging news for Arsenal fans who have been wanting a new number 1 for some time now.

It helps that the North London club are acting much quicker than they usually do and the sooner the deal is announced, the better it will be. Leno will join the Gunners from German side Bayer Leverkusen where he has been the first choice keeper for many seasons.

When the signing of the German is made official, one of Petr Cech or David Ospina are expected to leave the club. This is understandable as both would not like to be understudies to Leno and would rather seek first team football elsewhere.

The fact that Leno did not make the World Cup squad has made the whole process much easier. If he was at Russia, there would have been a few logistical complications as has happened in the deal to sign Lucas Torreira.

Once the fee and personal terms have been agreed, the medical should not take much time and as a result of this, the signing will be officially confirmed very soon.

When the deal is done, Leno will become the second confirmed signing this summer after the capture of Swiss full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus.

It is clear that new manager Unai Emery is trying to restructure the team to suit his vision and these signings are a step in that direction. For the price that he is coming at, Leno is great value for money and Arsenal fans will be itching to see him on the Emirates pitch very soon.

Arsenal to announce Bernd Leno signing on Tuesday

Bernd Leno

Arsenal are expected to announce the signing of Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno on Tuesday, according to an exclusive from SportBild.

The German shot-stopper has been tipped for a Gunners move since the end of the 2017/18 season and his non-involvement at the World Cup appears to have quickened the transfer proceedings.

As per SportBild, the north London giants are said to have agreed on a fee between €20m and €25m for the 26-year-old after his release clause expired.

It is added that Leno is now on the cusp of a Gunners move and the deal could be announced by the end of Tuesday, provided he goes through the necessary medical tests.

The length of the proposed contract has yet to be revealed but according to widespread reports, it is suggested that Leno is likely to put pen-to-paper on a five-year deal.

Leno, who has been with Leverkusen for the past seven seasons, was regarded as the prime target for Napoli last summer but the deal was scuppered after his club failed to find a replacement.

However, this time around, Leverkusen have managed to sign Lukas Hradecky on a free transfer from Augsburg and this has enhanced the Gunners’ pursuit of Leno after he snubbed a fresh approach from Napoli.

Leno’s arrival is likely to drop Petr Cech into the back-up keeper role and it will be interesting to see whether the 36-year-old will accept the position.

The former Czech international is supposedly attracting interest from Napoli and he could be tempted to join the Serie A giants with the assurance of regular gametime.

Meanwhile, the future of David Ospina is likewise unclear beyond the summer but the Colombia is unlikely to entertain the prospect of being the third choice beyond Leno and Cech next term.

Sky Sports reporter drops update on Arsenal’s interest in Bernd Leno

Bernd Leno

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has revealed that Arsenal are indeed in ‘advanced negotiations’ to pursue the signature of Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper Bernd Leno.

The Germany international has been associated with the Gunners since the close of last season and talks are said to have progressed in recent weeks with the keeper failing to make his country’s World Cup.

As per Sheth, the north Londoners are closing in on yet another summer signing in the form of Leno.

The transfer fee has not been revealed but as per sources, the Gunners are likely to trigger the £22m release clause written into his deal.

“They are in advanced talks we are told with the Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno,” Sheth is quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, Sheth raised doubts over the potential future of goalkeeping duo Petr Cech and David Ospina, who have entered the final year of their respective contracts.

He added: “This does raise question marks over the futures of Petr Cech and David Ospina. Ospina and Cech are in the final years of their contracts, which is a big call as well. Would either of them want to stay if Leno comes in?”

Both Cech and Ospina have been linked with potential exits to Napoli and Fenerbahce this summer but the latter appears the most likely to leave the club, considering he has been playing a back-up role for the past three seasons.

Cech, on the other hand, has been the undisputed first-choice for the Premier League duties and judging by his recent change to the number one shirt, he may see through the final year of his Gunners deal.

Arsenal have secured just a single signing in Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free this summer but this is soon expected to become a second with a £16m deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis said to have been wrapped up.

With a limited £50m pre-sales budget, Unai Emery may yet sanction the exit of a couple of existing players to accommodate new recruits during the current transfer window.

“Absolutely bossing Neymar, Incredible”, Arsenal fans react to new signing’s impressive display

Stephan Lichsteiner

Switzerland’s opening game in the group stage against Brazil, was the first glimpse that many Arsenal fans had of Stephan Lichsteiner.

The score ended up 1-1 after a stunning first-half strike from Philippe Coutinho was canceled out by Steven Zuber’s header from a corner in the 50th minute.

The former Juventus player would have been a free agent in the summer. After spending seven seasons in Turin and winning the title every year, he surely has got a winning mentality. That was probably what Unai Emery wanted to instill early on in his new team.

The fans had a lot of interesting reactions to the player’s performance against a strong Brazil lineup. Many were genuinely surprised at how good he played given the fact that he was facing the dual threat of Marcelo and Neymar.

Lichsteiner became the first signing of the Unai Emery era. Based on his performance against the South American side, it is safe to say that he will be able to provide excellent backup and guidance to Hector Bellerin.

Here are some of the best reactions from fans:

https://twitter.com/RapaxTheGooner/status/1008418840437514240

There were a few fans who were not particularly impressed with the veteran full back, but they were few and far between.

It has to be said that the performance was certainly an encouraging one as it is not easy to defend against the might of the Brazilian team.

Even at such a late stage in his career, Lichtsteiner has shown that he can still bomb up and down the pitch. Arsenal fans will be hoping that this will translate to the Emirates as well.

Jack Wilshere decides to leave Arsenal after talks with Unai Emery

Jack Wilshere

It is the day that many Arsenal fans do not want to see but come the 1st of July and Jack Wilshere is going to be playing for another team, according to reports in the Mirror.

There is a huge connect between the player and the fans and most of them will be disappointed to see him leave the club.

Despite the improved offers Arsenal put forward, it was the fact that new manager Unai Emery deemed him to be not important enough. This was the clinching factor in the decision made by Wilshere. The role that Emery had in mind for him was nowhere at the level that the player hoped it would be.

The £90,000-a-week has been dropping hints regarding his future every now and then but the decision seems to have been finalized now. It is clear that the player does not want to leave Arsenal but the circumstances are such that he will have to leave in order to find more playing time.

His path to the first team is already blocked by both Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey and when you add the arrival of Lucas Torreira, it is hard to see how he will fit in.

There are many suitors that are vying for the signature of the midfielder with options from both England and abroad as well. The English teams that are keen on Wilshere include West Ham, Everton and newly promoted Wolves. Any interest from abroad is said to come from teams such as Sampdoria, AC Milan and Juventus. There has been some rumored interest from Turkish side Fenerbahce as well.

It must be mentioned that Emery did not want to get rid of Wilshere but he did not guarantee a starting spot for the Englishman. Even though Arsenal did offer him an improvement on his current deal, the lack of playing time was the deal breaker.

Any Arsenal fan that has seen Wilshere play will feel sad when he moves away. This is a man who had the potential to become one of the best midfielders of his generation but a spate of injuries put a stop to that. Wherever he goes, he will be fondly remembered by those at the club.
