French outlet RMC claim Arsenal leading race to sign €40m midfielder

Even after all the transfers that Arsenal have made this summer, it appears that their business is not over yet.

The Gunners have brought in five players and two of them happen to be midfielders. Despite this, the club is in the race to sign the Frenchman Adrien Rabiot from Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports in RMC.

The midfielder is out of contract next year and that has led to a lot of speculation about his next move. Both Arsenal and Barcelona are looking at bringing him into their squad. The reasons for him wanting to leave Paris is based on two factors.

The first reason and perhaps the most important is that new manager Thomas Tuchel does not rate him very highly. This and the fact that his salary demands are not being met, has led the €40m midfielder to look elsewhere. It is difficult to see how Arsenal will be able to get him given the spending that they have done so far.

A player like Rabiot is sure to add a lot of the quality to the squad but given the midfield options that Arsenal have, it is difficult to see where he will be playing. But, we do not know exactly how the transfer window will pan out in the remaining days.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery was asked about bringing in players and he had this to say:

‘Normally, in my career the big clubs don’t close the [door] or the moment to sign a new player. Today, we are OK. Maybe we can bring in one if there’s a very good possibility for them to help us, but the club has done a great job of signing new players and I am happy.’

Arsenal have done well to address almost all the issues that exist in the squad with the signings that they have made. Now, they will have to focus on the contract situation of Aaron Ramsey. This will play a big part in the way future transfer business is done and that may include Rabiot.

Though this transfer has not yet been announced by the Gunners, the parent club of Sam Greenwood, Sunderland, have done their part.

Arsenal have managed to sign the highly rated youngster despite competition from teams such as Liverpool and Manchester United. This continues the transfer business that the London club have been conducting with a lot of efficiency.

Regarding the move of Greenwood, this is what Sunderland had to say:

‘Sunderland AFC can officially confirm that Academy player Sam Greenwood has joined Arsenal FC.

Sam declined the offer of scholarship terms with the club and made it clear that he saw his future elsewhere.

He expressed his desire to join Arsenal and we therefore moved quickly to bring the matter to conclusion, believing a swift resolution to be in the best interest of both Sam and the club. Terms were agreed with Arsenal and everyone at Sunderland AFC wishes Sam the very best of luck for the future as he embarks on the next stage of his football career.’

While the transfer of Greenwood is meant for the youth teams at the moment, it is difficult not to be excited by the deal. The Gunners do have the habit of giving such youngsters a chance and this may allow him to play a couple of matches here and there.

The powers that be at Arsenal identified Greenwood as someone who can improve the youth teams and have moved swiftly to bring him to North London. The youngster himself gave an indication of the move when he had posted a photo of him signing a contract on his Instagram profile.

This is what he had to say about the move:

‘Today is the start of a new chapter in my life signing for @arsenal and I can’t wait to get started, I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead’

The future does sound bright at Arsenal with the moves that the club has been making in this transfer window. When you add an exciting talent such as Greenwood to that mix, fans are bound to become happier.

Unai Emery drops key transfer update on signing La Liga midfielder

Steven N'Zonzi

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has highlighted that the club’s transfer business is more or less finished unless a big opportunity arises to sign a player this summer.

Since the arrival of Emery, the Gunners have been quick to sort of their recruits and five players in Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopouls, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi have already joined the club.

As a result, the necessary weaknesses in the goalkeeping, central defence and holding midfield have been solved but Emery has not entirely ruled out a sixth recruit in the transfer window.

Speaking ahead of the pre-season friendly versus Boreham Wood, Emery revealed the club’s transfer business is complete but hinted that there could be one more addition before the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi has been one who has been constantly linked with the club in recent weeks and when asked about speculation, Emery declined that the club have made any approach for his former player, he said:

“I know him but we haven’t made a move for him.”

Arsenal have usually fielded a second-team or reserve XI when they have taken on Boreham Wood over the years but this weekend’s fixture is likely to witness a change with several senior players in the mix.

Aaron Ramsey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are some of the high-profile in the running for the first pre-season friendly as Emery aims to prepare them for the high-profile games versus Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in Singapore later in the month.

Unai Emery’s plan to get the best out of Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil

It’s not exactly a secret that the fluctuating form of Mesut Ozil has been of concern, particularly last season.

The World Cup winner and midfield playmaker has suffered spells of inconsistency which many have highlighted as one of Arsenal’s major failings, particularly whilst Arsene Wenger was in charge.

The Frenchman had been accused of mollycoddling the German and allowing him too much license in his role.

This statement can be viewed as either totally unjust or extremely accurate, depending on your point of view but Ozil has tended to disappear on occasion in matches.

The problem is that when the midfielder is at his imperious best, he sets the bar of excellence so high that it becomes expected. The truth is that Ozil was hampered by a team with a great many weaknesses and that he has been expected to carry the burden alone.

Unai Emery realises the scale of the problem and intends to lift the pressure from his player’s shoulders by adding another midfielder to compliment the Germans undeniable skills.

Emery has decided to bolster the midfield with another player of equal creative skill to rejuvenate the new number 10. Names appear to be popping up daily but it may be a player that we have already seen in the World Cup and one that is not on everyone’s radar

Both Mislintat and Emery have contacts across the globe but if I were a betting man, I’d be looking at an existing player from the Spanish or German leagues. With both Country’s making an early exit from the WC, negotiations would be fairly easy to conduct and a transfer could be just weeks away.

Leaked video confirms Arsenal have signed Matteo Guendouzi

Arsenal Stadium

A lot of the focus on Arsenal was understandably on the signing of Lucas Torreira. This is because the deal has been in the pipeline for a long time and it was a relief when it was announced.

As a result of this, not a lot of attention was given to another transfer that the Gunners made. That would be the French Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient.

Though the club has not given any sort of confirmation, a video of the player signing his Arsenal contract has been doing the rounds. This is a very good piece of business by the club as the player is someone who is highly regarded in his country and according to reports the youngster has signed a 5-year contract.

Here is the video:

The idea to bring Guendouzi to the Emirates was suggested by the Head Of Recruitment, Sven Mislintat. He was the first to initiate any sort of contact with the player’s camp. Once this was done, it was down to new manger Unai Emery who took it upon himself to convince the player.

With this transfer, Guendouzi becomes the fifth player that Arsenal have brought in this transfer window. After the appointment of Emery, many fans were wondering how the funds would be used to buy players. And based on what we have seen so far, it appears that the funds have been used in the right manner.

The Frenchman had a breakthrough in the 2017/18 season where he established himself in the Lorient first team. But, the relationship between Guendouzi and the club took a turn for the worse and that has resulted in Arsenal benefiting and allowed them to get the player.

It will be interesting to see how the player will be used in the forthcoming season. Unai Emery has spoken of his willingness to integrate youth into the team and therefore there could be a chance for players such as Guendouzi. After the departure of Arsene Wenger, there was a lot of apprehension among Arsenal fans but the transfer activity of the club has gone some way to assuage those fears.

Sam Greenwood posts picture officially confirming he has signed for Arsenal

Unai Emery

Arsenal are looking to sign some youngsters to complement the players that have already been brought in. The Gunners have already made three signings but now, they are looking at players that are a little younger and are meant for the future.

One such player happens to be Sam Greenwood from Sunderland who has confirmed that he has signed for Arsenal. He posted a pic on Instagram:

https://instagram.com/p/BlD6kKzlogA/?taken-by=samgreenwood_10

The youngster earlier posted a photo of the Arsenal Training Center indicating that he was going in for his medical.

Arsenal have done well to sign the youngster as there was some competition for his signature from Liverpool and Manchester United. This is an indication of the quality that Greenwood has and he is expected to become a key member of the Arsenal youth teams.

While it is good to have experienced players at the club, it is nice to see the club make a move for some promising players as well. After all, if you do not think about the future then it will be difficult for the Gunners to prosper at a later date.

News of the signing of Greenwood has been spoken about as per reports that have come earlier. He was impressive for Sunderland in the Under-18 Premier League last season. He was able to showcase his talents in terms of assists as well as scoring goals. Getting the player also shows that Arsenal are far from done when it comes to their transfer business and that is a good sign for the club and its fans.

For Greenwood to play for the first team will be difficult unless he is able to do something extraordinary. But, given how involved Unai Emery will be with the youth teams, perhaps he may get a chance.

Arsenal have a history of supporting young players and nurturing them into world class talents. Given the hype that Greenwood is arriving with, fans will be waiting to see the youngster do well. The future sounds exciting and if everything goes according to plan, the Englishman could have a part to play in it.

Official: Lucas Torreira signs for Arsenal

Arsenal have confirmed their fourth recruit of the summer transfer window with Lucas Torreira arriving from Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee.

The Uruguayan was tipped to join the Gunners prior to the summer World Cup but the move was supposedly delayed with the midfielder keen on maintaining his focus with the national team.

Torreira featured in all five games for Uruguay in their progress to the quarter-final stage where they were eventually knocked out by France.

The 22-year-old has now penned a long-term deal with the Gunners after a month-long transfer saga and the club have confirmed that he will be wearing the number 11 shirt, formerly worn by Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal have struggled to pursue a tough-tackling defender with consistency in the ranks since the days of Patrick Vieira but they have been high hopes laid on Torreira, who was one of the bright lights for Uruguay during the World Cup.

As per Squawka, the Uruguayan was only behind Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante in terms of interceptions when compared to Premier League players and it will be interesting to see how he fares with the high intensity football in the English top-flight.

Torreira is now certain to go on vacation for the next three weeks at the least and his involvement at the start of the Premier League campaign may depend on whether he can quickly build up his fitness following his comeback.

Arsenal are also close to announcing the signings of Matteo Guendouzi from French outfit Lorient and the 19-year-old is likely to ply his trade for the Under-23s for the upcoming campaign.

Joel Lopez posts goodbye message, expected to join Arsenal

Arsenal Stadium

After focusing on signing more experienced players, Arsenal have turned their attention to some promising youngsters at the moment.

This is good news as it shows that the club is looking to safeguard the future as well. And one player that the Gunners are looking to bring in is Joel Lopez from Barcelona who has gone on and dropped a major hint about his future, according to reports in Metro.

The youngster who has decided that moving to London is the best choice for his career had this to say about his decision:

‘The day has come to say goodbye to what has been my home these last 7 years,’ Lopez told his followers on Instagram.

‘Thanks to Barcelona, it will be the club that I always carry in my heart for wonderful moments that I have lived with my friends, coaches, delegates, executives.

‘Magnificent people who have made me feel welcome from the first day.

‘It was a difficult decision but after contemplating it with my family I made the decision to go and start a new stage as a footballer with great enthusiasm.

‘Thanks to all who have been there always Visca Barca!’

This is a clear indication that Lopez is leaving the club and Arsenal have to be lauded for pulling this deal off. The Gunners have a history of signing players from the Barcelona youth academy. The most well-known examples of this would be Cesc Fabregas and Hector Bellerin.

So, when Lopez comes to the club, he will not feel alienated as he will be among some of his own. This is important when you move to a new country as it can be a little difficult to adjust to the surroundings. The news about the player’s transfer has been doing the rounds for sometime now as the first murmurs of this deal came a few weeks ago.

It is essential to look forward for a club as the future needs to be take care off as well. By signing an exciting talent such as Lopez, the Gunners have gone some way in ensuring this.

Sampdoria appear to confirm Arsenal have already signed Lucas Torreira, President speaks out

A lot of Arsenal fans thought that yesterday would be the day that the Gunners would finally be able to confirm Lucas Torreira as one of their own.

Alas, it was not to be as there was no news on that front from the London club. But, there was an interesting development coming from Italy where Torreira’s club Sampdoria have gone ahead and removed the player from their website, according to football.london.

This was spotted by an Arsenal fan on Twitter who had this say:

‘Lucas Torreira has now been omitted from Sampdoria’s squad on the official website. http://www.sampdoria.it/primasquadra/

It is an indication that the transfer is more or less complete and given the fact that Torreira was in London for his medical, it is only a matter of a few hours before we see him unveiled. Many fans were getting impatient with the club for not confirming the deal but with this bit of information, it is as good as a confirmation.

The president of Sampdoria Massimo Ferrero has also been talking about the deal for the Uruguayan and he had this to say when asked about the player’s departure:

“It will be very complicated to replace him”, Ferrero told Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX.

“We are looking at four different players: a Spaniard, a Belgian, a Croatian and one Italian.

“We need a strong player who can help us to make a step forward.”

Torreira was very impressive in the World Cup where he showed just why Arsenal wanted to sign him in the first place. He was impressive in both attack as well as defense. It is clear that he will fit into his new team very well.

Maybe Tuesday is going to the day that fans will get to see Arsenal confirm the signing of Torreira. The excitement among fans is quite palpable as they know what he will bring to the team and how that will help the squad. Let us hope that the Gunners make their fans happy today.

Jack Wilshere shows a lack of ambition moving to West Ham after Arsenal exit

Jack Wilshere

It’s with a heavy heart that I say this, but Jack Wilshere’s move to West Ham was as predictable as it was sad. It appears that Wilshere has received a fraction of the interest normally reserved for players with his considerable talent.

It was said that Everton and Galatasaray had contacted the player’s agent but Wilshere had decided that West Ham was his preferred destination. It is upsetting that a player with all Wilshere’s credentials and potential, couldn’t elicit a bid from one decent, foreign club but it appears his injury record has been a major stumbling block.

It feels that Wilshere’s career has been blighted in one way or another and the last straw was Wenger’s departure from the Emirates, which effectively ended his association with Arsenal. Incoming manager, Unai Emery had noticed, as had I, that the player, although incredibly talented, failed to control the play and influence or dominate the game.

Undoubtedly brimming with skill, Wilshere needs someone alongside him that can do those things, which made his case for an extension all the weaker. I am and have been, a massive Wilshere fan but having studied hours and hours of footage since his contract negotiations were announced, there’s little doubt that he can be viewed as a luxury in the heat of a battle.

People talk about his lack of development and much of what has been said is accurate, but his injuries have had a considerable impact on his game. Even so, once he came back to full fitness, he has failed to stamp his authority on major games as one would expect. Jack’s big problem apart from injuries, is confidence and belief. At times, Wenger was his champion but it seemed to most Gooners that something had changed in recent seasons.

A loan spell at Bournemouth hardly helped his cause with his contract running down and Wenger himself, told the media that Wilshere had been informed, early last season, that he was surplus to requirements. Injuries to others changed all that and allowed him to have a decent run in the team, a spell in which he displayed an array of cute and inventive touches and revealed his unparalleled vision but he simply didn’t stand out often enough.

After Wenger left and Emery was appointed, Wilshere must have feared the worst and that he would have to move on to progress but a move to West Ham? A team that have been involved in relegation year in and year out, it can hardly be seen as an upgrade, even if they invest heavily and Pellegrini works his magic.

It would seem that Wilshere has settled on stability for himself and his Family but many will say that he needed to move abroad to prove his worth. Galatasaray are hardly Bayern Munich, and if they were the only suitors from outside the Premiership, one can understand his reluctance.

Yet, West Ham, will at best, fight for a place anywhere between 10th to 7th and at worst, line up in the perennial dogfight at the bottom, neither which are likely to increase Wilshere’s chances of an England shirt. At West Ham, he will have to assert himself on a weekly basis for Gareth Southgate to remotely consider adding him to England’s current squad of enthusiastic young lions.

Could it be that Wilshere feels safe at West Ham and that it’s a slightly lazy move? One, where he can shine amid a squad of reasonably ordinary players or has Pellegrini developed a master plan to reinvent West Ham and drag them into contention for the premier league?

Well, out of those two options, I would probably say it was option one. I hope, like every other Arsenal supporter that Jack Wilshere becomes the player we always thought he could be. That he returns to the England squad and puts on a master class and remains fully fit from here on. He had his chance at Arsenal and never really took it
