Arsenal looking into deal for the ‘next Toni Kroos’

Unai Emery

Arsenal are reportedly among the clubs monitoring the performances of Hoffenheim midfielder Arne Maier with a view to a future approach for his services.

The Gunners are currently in a comfortable positions in terms of the midfield options with Granit Xhaka, Mateo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira in impressive form while Mohamed Elneny has provided the back-up for the Cup competitions.

Nonetheless, the club are continuing the search for another midfielder in their ranks and according to an exclusive from The Sun, Maier is one of those being closely tracked by the club’s scouts.

Gunners head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has already done quality business for the club with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Torreira among the high-profile signings this year and Maier appears another player, who could fit the club’s criteria.

The club’s hierarchy have shown a reluctance to spend big money when it comes to strengthening the midfield and defensive options and this pretty much makes Maier the perfect fit with Hoffenheim said to value him at just £15m.

Nonetheless, his valuation could be driven up with Manchester United already in the ranks to pursue the teenager, though Jose Mourinho’s reluctance to go with youth in the centre of the park may give the Gunners’ the advantage.

Maier, who has been dubbed the new Toni Kroos, has been ever-present for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga playing every minute to date. His attributes quite match Xhaka with passing and concentration being among his key strengths but he still needs to improve on his tackling and positional awareness.

Arsenal made it 21 matches unbeaten over the weekend where they picked up a slender 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town but they are still behind the final Champions League qualification position on goal difference to Chelsea.

‘He is already an Arsenal legend’, Some Arsenal fans praise midfielder after Huddersfield win

Lucas Torreira

A section of the Arsenal fans were elated with the performance of Lucas Torreira during Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League win over Huddersfield Town.

The Gunners entered the game with a 20-match unbeaten run and they managed to extend the streak further with a close but yet comfortable triumph over the Terriers.

Torreira was once more the leading performer with a couple of crucial tackles but it was his attacking play which earned him plaudits after bagging the sole goal of the game.

The north London side appeared on course to secure a second-straight league draw but Torreira managed to avoid such instance after scoring with a wonderful scissor kick in the 83rd minute.

Following the match, some Arsenal fans took to Twitter to exhibit their happiness over the performance with one of those even suggesting that the player may attract interest from the likes of Real Madrid with his consistent showing of late.

Torreira has been playing without much rest for club and country over the past few months but his intensity on the field has been impressive.

Apart of his regular defensive duties, the South American has shown more of a presence in the frontline in recent games and this has paid dividends with goals against Tottenham and Huddersfield in addition to providing an assist for Shkodran Mustafi’s lucky strike at Manchester United.

Clearly now, the Uruguayan stands out as one of the best signings of the 2018 summer transfer window but it remains to be seen whether he can keep up the intensity during the congested schedule between December and February, which he would not have experienced during his time at ex-club Sampdoria.

Arsenal’s bruising encounter at Old Trafford ends with two key injuries

Unai Emery

The last time Arsenal won at Old Trafford was 2006, which was settled by an Emmanuel Adebayor goal in the 86th minute. Since that win, Manchester United have fallen into the type of disrepair that the Gunners experienced after moving stadiums and selling off its assists.

Nothing quite as serious has befallen Manchester United, the only major hiccup has been the monumental loss of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Ferguson era seems a distant memory and those feisty encounters between the top two clubs in the land, feverishly contested by the two best managers in the land are consigned to footballs illustrious 90’s back catalogue.

One can safely say that although the teams have been rebuilt and those managerial swivel chairs have different occupants, there is still a desire to gain the upper hand, even if the intensity is not at the same level.

Arsenal’s revolution is in full swing and they have managed to muddle through a period of adjustment successfully and notched up an unbeaten run of 19 games, whereas United have struggled for periods with a loss of form, collectively and individually.

Mourinho hasn’t helped his cause with his verbal assaults on his own players and one can surmise that this is partially due to frustration and partially due to his massive ego. On a rainy Wednesday evening, under the Northern floodlights, the expectations of Arsenal fans were also dampened by a thoroughly negative Manchester United.

They are fast becoming the new Stoke City, such is their physicality and brutality. In truth, they could always slug it out but they also had flair and a dash of style with the likes of Giggs, Beckham and Scholes. This particular version of United was in deficit and players such as the despicable Marouane Fellaini are taking them further away from their illustrious past at breakneck speed.

The heady intensity of the Emirates on Sunday was replaced by an almost dispiriting contest full of disappointing sluggishness and peppered with laughable and embarrassing mistakes.

The Worlds best goalkeeper, David De Gea, who gives the impression that he’d rather be anywhere than soggy Manchester, somehow managed to gift Arsenal with an opener in the 26th Minute. Shkodran Mustafi’s header from a Lucas Torreira’s cross, caught De Gea daydreaming. The Spaniard surprisingly spooned the ball over his head and the line, despite Ander Herrera’s attempt to pull off a Bruce Lee style clearance.

That lead didn’t last long as a resurgent Anthony Martial got the home side back on terms just minutes later. Bernd Leno’s excellent diving save from a Rojo’s free kick was retrieved by Herrera who then found a pinpoint cross for Martial to steer in.

In defensive terms, it was a shocker. At least six players in mint green could have prevented the goal but no one closed the Frenchman down, everyone left it for someone else and the result was inevitable.

Rob Holding and Aaron Ramsey were casualties of this occasionally thuggish affair, both leaving the field with knee and ankle concerns. The losses actually limited Emery’s options and altered the entire direction of the game. Arsenal appeared unsettled and misshapen.

The game coughed and spluttered until thankfully, another goal generated some much-needed body heat by way of jumping, punching the air and clapping. 68th minutes in when Marcos Rojo provided Ramsey’s replacement and former United midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with the chance to put Alexandre Lacazette through, Rojo’s tried to intercept but managed to take the ball from the foot of the Frenchman and into his own net.

Another classic from the Arsenal book of defensive howlers followed shortly after.
A lofted ball saw four Arsenal shirts scanning the skies but none tracked the ball sufficiently well to clear it once it descended. Lingard appeared through the middle unseen and unchecked to stroke the ball into the net on 74 minutes and that was that.

For me, the game was a disappointing one, full of unnecessary ankle taps, trips, barges and worst of all hair pulling. The barbaric Marouane Fellaini was beaten for pace by Mattéo Guendouzi and resorted to grabbing a handful of the Frenchman’s locks to stop him dead in his tracks.

If this is Mourinho’s new and bold approach, it’s a sad testament to his deteriorating coaching skills, yet it summed up United’s evening. For Arsenal, it’s been a good couple of weeks, still in all competitions and within striking distance of a top 4 finish.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery to consider his options against a toothless Huddersfield

Arsenal Players

It would be incredibly stupid to think that Huddersfield are going to just roll over when they encounter an Arsenal side at the Emirates that is on a high, having found enviable momentum.

I expect a full bloodied encounter from a side struggling for points and with absolutely nothing to lose. Huddersfield’s position at present is not a true reflection of the quality they have or their footballing philosophy.

Confidence is key and at the moment, it’s in short supply but I agree with a great many others that they have the all the tools to stay up.

They are caught in a dogfight with six other clubs to avoid relegation and are currently just one point above the dreaded bottom three, which will surely encourage them to come out all guns blazing.

Their main problem is similar to a host of other clubs desperately trying to avoid the drop, lack of goals whilst conceding too many at the other end. Fortunately for them, the fixtures ahead only include Arsenal and Manchester United, then it all seems slightly more achievable with games against Newcastle, Southampton and Fulham, all of which are in the same boat.

Kongolo, Stankovic, Hadergjonaj, Jorgensen and Mooy all have quality if selected but up against the big teams, the failure to provide the frontline has crippled the cause. Against Bournemouth, Huddersfield were just short in terms of delivery to make a game of it.

Running your socks off and getting into key area’s doesn’t count the same as goals and at times it was like chasing shadows with a series half chances and squandered chances, that will have filled David Wagner’s team with regret.

Arsenal should have way too much for Huddersfield, even with their depleted options due to injury. The big questions are concerned with the middle and at the back at present.

Will Ozil feature, will Ramsey be fit and who will replace Rob Holding but there is at least some good news with Granit Xhaka, is ready to return and as much as I would love to rest and protect Lucas Torreira, it looks unlikely.

Hopefully, Arsenal can regroup after a tough week against Spurs and a brutal encounter with Manchester United. I wouldn’t be surprised if Emery rotates a couple of fringe players but this is not a match to experiment wildly, although I suspect Emery will resist that particular temptation as much as he can.

My main concern is the absence of form in Alex Iwobi, his contribution has decreased over the last few matches and he must be extremely close to exhausting the Spaniard’s patience with the likes of Maitland Nile’s almost begging for a start.

No doubt Emery must be tempted to make that change for at least the first 45 with an option to shuffle if it’s not working well. I fully expect an Arsenal win by at least two goals after the Huddersfield resistance falls away, let’s hope we are back to the side that tormented and toyed with Spurs.

Arsenal considering move for highly-rated Ivorian to replace Danny Welbeck

Arsenal are reportedly looking into a move for highly-rated Ivorian forward Nicolas Pepe as they seek to find a replacement for Danny Welbeck at the end of the ongoing campaign.

Welbeck sustained a serious ankle injury during the recent Europa League clash against Sporting and he has since undergone a double operation which is likely to sideline him for the rest of the season.

Amidst this, Sky Sports has indicated that the Englishman could be released on a free when his contract expires in seven months’ time and it appears that the club are already on the hunt for a replacement.

According to Mercato365, Unai Emery’s men are among a host of clubs keeping tabs on Pepe, who has excelled for Lille this campaign with 10 goals and five assists in the French top-flight.

However, any approach could be reserved until the end of the campaign with the forward likely to consider the move only if the Gunners manage to return to next season’s Champions League.

Pepe has generally featured on the right side of the attack for Lille with success but he is capable of featuring either upfront or in the second striker position which seems to have caught the Gunners’ radar.

Nonetheless, the assurance of regular gametime could also play a key role in luring the French-born star next summer and it will be interesting to see how the transfer saga unfolds with interest from several other elite clubs across Europe.

Arsenal dropped to the fifth position in the standings after the recent 2-2 Premier League draw at Manchester United but they can break into the top-four once more this weekend with a win over Huddersfield Town combined with one of Tottenham or Chelsea dropping points.

Arsenal manager reveals return date for Laurent Koscielny

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has provided a positive feedback on the progress of defender Laurent Koscielny ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash against Huddersfield Town.

The former France international has been out of first-team action since sustaining a serious Achilles injury in the Europa League semi-final defeat at Atletico Madrid.

However, he has recently featured in a couple of games for the Under 23s including a 85 minute outing in the 2-1 Checkatrade trophy defeat to Portsmouth and Emery has now indicated that the club-captain is not far off from a comeback.

In a news conference covered by Arsenal’s official website, Emery praised the Frenchman by citing the experience and quality he would bring into the team, once he is involved on a regular basis.

The Spanish tactician added that Koscielny may potentially return to the matchday 18 for the Huddersfield clash but he may have to wait for his first competitive appearance against Qarabag in the final group stage game of the Europa League.

“We are on a gradual way with him. He’s played two matches with the under-23s. He played 85 minutes on Tuesday and our plan is that he can maybe be with us in the 18 on Saturday. Maybe he can play against Qarabag in the Europa League,” he said.

Meanwhile, Emery has confirmed that Rob Holding will undergo further tests before the club can reveal the severity of the knee injury sustained against Manchester United in midweek.

In his absence, Stephan Lichtsteiner was called forward to occupy one of the central defensive positions in the 3-4-3 setup but it remains to be seen whether Emery goes with the same formation for the visit of David Wagner’s side.

Arsenal are currently behind the final Champions League qualification spot on goal difference to Chelsea but they have a good chance of leapfrogging their London counterparts who face a difficult test against Manchester City this weekend.

Arsenal boss drops fresh update on Mesut Ozil’s injury

Mesut Ozil

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has highlighted that midfielder Mesut Ozil remains a potential injury doubt for the club’s Premier League clash against Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The former Germany international has missed the previous two matches against Vorskla and Tottenham Hotspur with a back spasm and it appears that his absence may continue from the matchday squad when the Gunners make the trip to Manchester.

Speaking in a news conference covered by ESPN, Emery highlighted that Ozil has been training aside from his teammates and he is unsure whether the World Cup winner will recover in time for the late Premier League kickoff on Wednesday.

He said: “Today he was working alone, I don’t know if he’s OK for Wednesday. I said yesterday he’s had backache since last Tuesday. He couldn’t play in Kiev [against FC Vorskla] or yesterday. At the moment, I don’t know if he can play in Manchester.”

Nevertheless, Ozil’s position in the starting lineup remains far from certain at the moment with Emery recently expressing concern over the German’s physical attributes which contributed to him being an unused substitute against Bournemouth last month.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi have been the regular starters in the attack alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the past two matches but Emery should seriously consider dropping the former two to the substitutes’ bench.

In their places, Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette are likely to make the first XI after their match-defining contributions from the bench against Spurs where the latter was paired alongside Aubameyang upfront.

3-4-1-2: Lacazette and Ramsey start, Strongest Predicted Arsenal lineup to face Manchester United

Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal have the opportunity to extend their unbeaten run to 20 games in all competitions when they make the trip north to face Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Unai Emery’s side are presently occupying the fourth position ahead of Tottenham Hotspur on goal difference after they beat their north London counterparts by a 4-2 scoreline last weekend.

Formation: 3-4-1-2

Predicted Lineup:

Bernd Leno was guilty of conceding Spurs’ opening goal during the recent derby triumph but barring that, his performance did not present any flaws. He should continue between the sticks.

In defence, Emery may fancy sticking with the three-man backline which has worked impressively since the international break.

In this case, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Rob Holding should reclaim their central defensive positions with Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac featuring ahead of them in the right and left wing-back positions respectively.

Onto the midfield, Granit Xhaka is expected to miss the crunch midweek game after picking up his fifth yellow card of the Premier League season in the derby, which will see him serve a one-match domestic suspension.

In his absence, Mateo Guendouzi is pretty much an automatic pick for the central midfield duties and he should be partnered by Lucas Torreira, who capped a stellar performance against Spurs with his maiden goal for the Gunners.

Further forward, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi may drop to the bench for this encounter after witnessing Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette produce match-defining performances against Spurs after replacing them at the break.

Ramsey appears a strong candidate to take up the number 10 role while Lacazette should partner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang upfront after the duo combined splendidly during the second half of the comeback triumph over Spurs.

‘Born finisher’, ‘Brilliant Player’, some Arsenal fans praise forward after derby win

Aubameyang

A section of the Arsenal faithful were elated with the performance of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the recent derby triumph over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Gunners took up an early advantage with Aubameyang from a penalty kick but the lead did not hold up to the break with Eric Dier and Harry Kane putting Spurs 2-1 up.

However, Unai Emery’s side managed to make a stellar comeback during the second period and Aubameyang was hugely instrumental with another goal and an assist which contributed towards the 4-2 triumph.

Aubameyang has regularly been highlighted as a tap-in merchant with the vast majority of his goals coming in and around the six-yard box but he managed to prove his credentials from long-range in the north London derby with a stunning one-time shot after a lovely pass from Aaron Ramsey.

https://twitter.com/DF_Arsenal/status/1069260989328224256

He thereafter continued to pile the pressure on Mauricio Pochettino’s men with a couple of crucial interceptions and eventually helped in putting the result to bed after providing the through ball which Lucas Torreira capitalised upon to score his maiden goal for the club.

With the result, Aubameyang has managed to leapfrog the likes of Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling to the top of the Premier League charts with 10 goals this term and he should relish the chance of extending the tally further against an out-of-form Manchester United side in midweek.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are now occupying the fourth position ahead of Spurs on goal difference after the sublime derby triumph while their unbeaten run has also extended to 19 matches across all competitions.

‘Well deserved’, some Arsenal fans demand club to renew midfielder’s contract after Spurs win

Aaron Ramsey

Arsenal supporters have taken to Twitter to demand the club to extend the contract of midfielder Aaron Ramsey. The Wales international has been with the club for the past decade but his future remains largely uncertain with his contract expiring in seven months’ time.

Amidst this, Ramsey has found himself on the substitutes’ bench on a regular basis for the league duties but he managed to make a strong impact in the recent derby win over Tottenham.

The Welshman was brought onto the field at the break when the Gunners were trailing by a 2-1 scoreline and he managed to change the complexion with assists for the goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette to follow.

As such, a section of the faithful have been very impressed with the derby performance of the 27-year-old and they took to social media to urge the Gunners’ board to extend the  midfielder’s contract.

Ramsey has been frustrating with his tendency to lose possession of the ball in certain matches for the Gunners but his impact especially in the big games has made him an influential figure over the years.

Still, the Gunners hierarchy have shown no plans of revisiting contract discussions with the midfielder but it remains to be seen whether the Welshman can change this thought with performances of the same level on a consistent basis.

Ramsey has found himself behind the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi for the league duties of late but he could feature from the off when the Gunners tackle Manchester United on the road in the midweek Premier League encounter.
