Arsenal boss confirms fresh Injury blow after Southampton defeat

Hector Bellerin in Training

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has confirmed that Hector Bellerin has suffered an injury which is due to keep him out of action for the next few weeks at the least.

The Spain international has shown signs of returning to form under Emery this campaign but his progress was stunted at St Mary’s where he was subbed off at half-time after feeling pain on his lower left leg.

Speaking after the game, Emery acknowledged that Bellerin has suffered more than a knock and this is likely to keep him out of action until the turn of the year, he told Sky Sports:

“Bellerin has a small injury – he is going to be some weeks off, I think.”

In the absence of Bellerin, Stephan Lichtsteiner initially took up the right-back duties after the change in formation in the second half at St Mary’s but he was later on replaced by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Injuries have hampered the Gunners over the past month with Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck ruled out for the remainder of the campaign and this has encouraged speculation of the club looking into reinforcements in the New Year.

Still, the club need to focus with the options in hand with the festive round of fixtures coming up and Emery has received a welcoming boost ahead of the League Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

Both Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos are set to return to action after serving a one-match domestic suspension during the Saints defeat.

They are expected to be joined by Sead Kolasinac, who was left out over the weekend after he felt a ‘tightness’ in his thigh.

Arsenal boss provides update on January transfer plans

Unai Emery

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has said that he may only dip into the transfer market judging by the performances of the players during the forthcoming weeks.

The Gunners have recently gone through a tough period with both Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck ruled out for the season and they have recently been joined by Hector Bellerin in the treatment room, although for a short interval until the turn of the year.

Amidst this, Emery has recently been asked about the club’s transfer plans for the New Year to which he has suggested that the board are working into potential deals to strengthen the current squad.

Nonetheless, the Spaniard tactician reiterated that he would prefer to offer opportunities to some of the young guns before deciding whether any spending is essential when the transfer window reopens.

“Only if we think the players can’t help us with a good performance. January is not a good transfer window for this reason, but we are going to look and the club is working for transfers in January, but also we are in a [good] way,” he told Sky Sports.

“We are making progress with young players and giving them chances, and when we need to give them more chances to play and show their progress we are going to do that.”

Arsenal recently witnessed a 22-match unbeaten run cease after a 3-2 league defeat at Southampton where Emery had to go with a makeshift central defence of Stephan Lichtsteiner, Laurent Koscielny and Granit Xhaka.

The situation should return to normalcy for the midweek League Cup quarter-final against Spurs with Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos serving their one-match domestic suspensions but there nevertheless remains the lack of depth in the central defensive position.

At present, Mustafi, Sokratis and Koscielny remain the only fit specialists for the central defensive role and the latter of trio is genuinely lacking match sharpness after struggling to cope with the aerial threat at St Mary’s.

Arsenal offered chance to sign Barcelona star for just £14m

Arsenal are reportedly among the clubs who have been contacted regarding the availability of Barcelona’s Denis Suarez ahead of the winter transfer window.

The one-time Spain international has struggled to come anywhere close to the starting lineup for the La Liga duties this term and he has been restricted to just eight minutes of league action.

Amidst this, The Independent claims that the Blaugrana are prepared to sanction his sale when the transfer window reopens and the Gunners are one of the sides, who have been contacted regarding the same.

The Gunners have recently made the decision not to extend the contract of midfielder Aaron Ramsey beyond the current campaign and should their stance remain unchanged, a replacement is likely to be purchased next year.

In this case, Suarez could emerge as a possible candidate which Emery may prefer, given he has previously coached the Spaniard during the midfielder’s solitary loan season with Sevilla during the 2014/15 campaign.

Elsewhere, the player’s price tag also appears a tempting factor with the Blaugrana prepared to accept a fee in the region of £14m while only demanding a sell-on percentage for the future rather than the inclusion of a buy-back clause.

Despite this, there remains no urgency to bolster the midfield for the campaign and Emery may first seek potential reinforcements in the central defence and centre-forward positions where the club have been hampered.

Arsenal are expected to be without centre-back Rob Holding for the campaign with a serious knee problem and the same goes for Welbeck, who has already undergone a double ankle operation to keep him sidelined for the long-term.

Ozil and Lacazette start, Strongest Predicted Arsenal lineup (4-2-3-1) to face Southampton

Mesut Ozil

Arsenal can extend their unbeaten run to 23 matches across all competitions when they entertain struggling Southampton on the road this weekend. The Gunners only managed a close 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town last time out and the upcoming game at St Mary’s could provide another tricky prospect with the Saints recently witnessing a change in management which usually bring about a reaction from the players.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted Lineup:

Bernd Leno has been the Gunners’ outright choice for the league goalkeeping duties since October and the German should reclaim his position at St Mary’s.

In the defence, Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac should continue commanding their roles on the right and left side of the backline but the central defensive department will certainly experience a change with both Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos suspended for one domestic game after accumulating five yellow cards in the Premier League.

In their places, Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal appear the likelier pair to feature with Rob Holding already on the sidelines for the long-term. The former is set to make his first Premier League bow since April after recovering from a serious Achilles injury.

In the midfield, Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka have pretty much sealed their positions under Emery and they should retain their places in the centre of the park for the trip to the South Coast.

Further forward, Mesut Ozil could re-enter the fray following his recent return from a back problem and we are fancying him to slot into the number 10 role in a league game for the first time since November 11.

The German could be flanked by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alex Iwobi on the left and right wing respectively while Alexandre Lacazette should lead the line against the Saints after scoring the sole goal against Qarabag in midweek.

Arsenal win against ambitionless Qarabag, Unai Emery puts club’s youngsters on show

This rather pointless match between Arsenal and Qarabag had very little going for it, with the Azerbaijani side nailed to the bottom of Europa League group E and Arsenal comfortably through, without all the usual drama that ensues.

It was never going to be a spectacle with Qarabag appearing to be generally demotivated and unenthusiastic about the task ahead, against an Arsenal side that had been subjected to major changes.

Ozil and Koscielny were back after injury and there were the additions of Arsenal’s future, in the form of Bukayo Saka, Chris Willock, Eddie Nketiah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who are growing in stature with every appearance and opportunity.

The game itself was a painful affair for the most part, difficult to extract any pleasure from and on a cold evening, hard to discover any level of excitement to generate body heat. Apart from Mesut Ozil, who showed genuine class on the ball and provided the only goal of the game after 17 minutes.

Nketiah’s outstretched leg pinched the ball and he fed Ozil, who sprinted forward into the box. The German’s exquisite touch fed Lacazette who added a powerful finish to thump the final nail in Qarabag’s Europa League coffin. The Emirates looked bare, with sizeable holes in the crowd. It was said that 58,000 tickets had been sold but either there was something good on the Telly or it was too cold for the majority to come out in support of the Champions League’s poor distant cousin.

It’s more likely the time of year with many fans having to spread the cost of the festive season, cherry picking the cluster of games ahead or it may be that the Europa league has significantly less appeal than the Champions league. Yet, Emery, to his credit, affords it with the same attention to detail as the Champions League, having won it three consecutive seasons in a row with Sevilla.

Despite questions regarding the competition’s credibility, if Arsenal were to win it in Emery’s first season, it will be a stroke of genius but it’s from this point on where the hard work starts. There are bigger and tougher games ahead that will stretch Arsenal’s resources to the max and test their desire and mentality. It was a night for the academy players to stake a claim for a first team slot and with the fixtures arriving thick and fast, a few will be given the chance.

Saka is certainly up there with any of the young prospects and both he and Nketiah could have appeared on the scoresheet but almost certainly, they will have better days. Nketiah had a goal ruled offside, which was a pity but his natural desire will see him come good in the future.

Willock gave a good account of himself, waspishly gathering up any wayward balls and snapping at heels when the opportunity came. Maitland-Niles was confident and assured and looked extremely good on his forays into the oppositions half but it would be nice to see him in the midfield occasionally to show his full quota of talent.

In fact, the academy players that Arsenal have invested time and money in could be regarded in the same way as the United side that contained Beckham, Scholes, the Neville’s and Giggs. That’s how good the potential is. The game was one in which the mind often drifted, looking for things to occupy itself and there were sloppy, careless and uneventful periods that made the game difficult to enjoy.

The fact that Qarabag were so unenthusiastic about this game, made Arsenal’s job easier and with the space, they were afforded, they should have plundered more than just a single goal. Yet, in the final analysis, this campaign has been a resounding success and hasn’t involved all the usual qualification drama. One suspects that had Qarabag managed to get back on terms, then Arsenal would have been forced to do more.

However, the multiple changes in personnel did impact on the flow and style of their football. It was almost as if the team was suffering a degree of jet lag, as the natural fabric was lost but as the game went on, it got better. Of course, this disruption and the surrendered space gave Ozil the opportunity to show off his collection of passes, that were three or four levels above what everyone else was playing.

This bodes well for a busy December and particularly, the tricky encounter against Southampton, who one suspects, will have more appetite for a scrap as they try to avoid the relegation vortex.

Arsenal eyeing swoop for Manchester United star as Rob Holding replacement

Arsenal are reportedly considering an attempt to sign Manchester United’s Eric Bailly next month as they seek to cover up the absence of Rob Holding with a long-term injury.

Holding recently sustained a serious knee problem during the league game at Old Trafford and the club have since confirmed that the Englishman would be sidelined between six and nine months.

Amidst this, Emery has acknowledged that the club may seek to pursue a good ‘defensive’ option during the winter period and according to ESPN, Bailly has emerged as one of the prime targets on their radar.

The Ivory Coast international has been one of United’s standout performers whenever he has featured in the starting lineup but he has not quite managed to cement a regular role amid concerns over his fitness, in particular.

Due to this, there has been strong speculation linking him with a departure from Old Trafford but a winter switch to the Emirates remains highly doubtful with Mourinho said to value the defender highly despite the strained relationship between the two.

Meanwhile, Chelsea captain Gary Cahill has been highlighted as another option to possible reinforce the Gunners backline next month and the Englishman should be available on a cheaper price when compared to Bailly.

Cahill, who has yet to make a league start for the Blues this term, has just seven months remaining on his existing deal and the 32-year-old could offer a potential boost to the Gunners backline, although he has shown signs of regressing over the past year.

Arsenal are scheduled to face Qarabag at the Emirates Stadium in their final Europa League group stage game tonight and the match is expected to witness the much-awaited return of skipper Laurent Koscielny after his long-term Achilles problem.

Unai Emery delivers key fitness update on Mesut Ozil before Qarabag clash

Mesut Ozil

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has confirmed that midfielder Mesut Ozil has overcome his back problem and should make the matchday squad for the upcoming Europa League clash against Qarabag at the Emirates Stadium.

The game is pretty much a dead-rubber for both sides but the Gunners have the opportunity to pick up a fifth-straight clean sheets which would match the all-time record in the competition – currently shared by Napoli and Red Bull Salzburg.

Speaking ahead of Thursday night’s game, Emery acknowledged that Ozil would be making the matchday 18 after overcoming a nagging back problem but the Spanish tactician refused to confirm whether the German would feature from the off.

“I don’t know. Tomorrow he is in the group, there are 18 players in the squad for this match and I am going to decide if he plays tomorrow from the beginning or during the match in the 90 minutes,” he is quoted as saying by Arsenal.com.

Ozil was surprisingly dropped to the bench for the Bournemouth game following the international break and he has since failed to make the matchday squad for four successive matches amid the recent back problem.

However, the midweek game offers him the opportunity to win over the manager’s confidence once more and a strong showing may potentially enhance his prospects of making the first XI at Southampton this weekend.

Meanwhile, Emery also confirmed that Laurent Koscielny would mark his first competitive appearance of the season against Qarabag and he could continue to feature in the Premier League over the weekend, provided he goes unscathed on Thursday night.

Arsenal keen on signing La Liga defender available for just £10m

Unai Emery

Arsenal are reportedly keen on pursuing the signature of Real Valladolid defender Fernando Calero amid the recent long-term term injury for Rob Holding.

The Gunners recently witnessed Holding sustain a serious knee problem and they have since confirmed that the Englishman could be sidelined between six and nine months.

Amidst this, manager Unai Emery is understood to be keen on bolstering the central defensive department and Cadena Ser reveals that the club are looking into a winter agreement for Calero.

Calero, 23, has been in impressive form for the Valladolid defence this term which has conceded just 15 goals in as many league games and his showing has seemingly captured the eye of Europe’s elite including Borussia Dortmund.

Nonetheless, the Gunners are pondering over a winter approach for the Spanish defender with his current contract with the La Liga side said to possess a relatively cheap release clause of around £10m.

Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis had featured for the Gunners during the recent league clash versus Huddersfield but neither will feature at Southampton this weekend after receiving a one-match suspension for accumulating five yellow cards.

In this case, club-captain Laurent Koscielny could be drafted into the league mix after recovering from a long-term Achilles problem while Nacho Monreal and Stephan Lichtsteiner remain probable options in a makeshift role.

Konstantinos Mavropanos is another who should return to the first-team setup in the forthcoming weeks following a lengthy groin problem and a winter agreement for Calero may witness him remain a back-up option for the season at best.

Arsenal are scheduled to entertain Qarabag in their final group stage game of the Europa League on Thursday night and the game may witness Koscielny earning his first competitive appearance of the season before possibly making his league bow.

4-2-3-1: Strongest Predicted Arsenal lineup to face Qarabag, Smith Rowe and Koscielny start

Arsenal will be aiming to continue their 21-match unbeaten run in all competitions when they entertain Qarabag in their final group stage game of the Europa League on Thursday night.

The north London side have already sealed their progress into the knockouts with the top spot but Unai Emery is likely to ring in the changes with the young and fringe players coming into the fray.

The Gunners have kept four clean sheets on the bounce in the competition and a fifth against Qarabag would match the competition’s all-time record held by Red Bull Salzburg and Napoli.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted Lineup:

Petr Cech has been demoted to the club’s second-choice since his hamstring injury earlier in September and he should start between the sticks on Thursday night.

In the defence, Carl Jenkinson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are potential candidates to slot into the right and left side of the backline.

Meanwhile, club-captain Laurent Koscielny could make his first appearance of the season with Emery already hinting that the Frenchman would feature in the game.

Alongside him, we are anticipating a start for Sokratis who alongside Shkodran Mustafi are suspended for the weekend’s league encounter at Southampton.

Onto the midfield, Mohamed Elneny has been a regular choice for the European duties and he could be accompanied by his regular partner Guendouzi, who has started the previous four games in the competition.

Further forward, Emile Smith Rowe and Joe Willock could once more feature on the left and right wing respectively after the promising performance at Vorskla last time around while Henrikh Mkhitaryan could partner them in the number 10 role.

Upfront, Emery is unlikely to take any risk involving Aubameyang or Lacazette from the off and this should offer the opportunity for Eddie Nketiah to start for the Gunners for only the second occasion.

Last gasp Lucas Torreira stunner gives Arsenal all three points against Huddersfield

Arsenal Celebrations

Sometimes it takes one exquisite moment of brilliance to change a game. One superb bit of skill to wipe away the memory of a bitty, scrappy affair and to claim the valuable three points.

That moment arrived in the 83rd minute when Aubameyang was thwarted in his attempt at goal but he still managed to retrieve the ball and had the presence of mind to lob it over the scrambling and dismantled Huddersfield defence for the excellent Lucas Torreira to add an acrobatic finish.

There were sighs of relief, and a tidal wave of praise for the diminutive midfielder as Arsenal sailed into 3rd spot in the premiership. Huddersfield were determined to get something but the fact was that this new cult hero did a job when all looked lost.

It was an incredibly sloppy affair and it seemed that the North Londoners footballing telepathy was in need of urgent repair but in a match, featuring injury, simulation and a series of yellow cards, any chance of momentum was remote. The disrupted nature of this encounter resulted in 6 minutes of added time.

Arsenal were so out of salts that they resorted to long ball tactics, which goes against the very nature of their football philosophy and the chances that fell to their two hot shots were wasted. Aubameyang seemed slightly at odds with himself and could easily have added to his tally of 10 goals and Lacazette blazed one over from 12 yards after an untimely slip.

Huddersfield for all their endeavour were toothless in front of goal and unless that is swiftly resolved in January, the inevitable drop will follow. Like Arsenal they had chances but even if the goalkeeper had taken an early bath and the goal had been twice the size, they seemed unlikely to score.

The main offender for the Gunners was Granit Xhaka, who seemed incapable of finding a red and white shirt, so much so, that some joker in the crowd recommended an urgent visit to Specsavers. Lacazette had a goal disallowed for offside and from where I was, the decision looked dubious, to say the least. Technicalities will be the death of football, yet there is still a firm reluctance to use VAR regularly.

Huddersfield’s best chances fell to Pritchard who scuffed and fluffed each one that came his way, the worst example was scoping the ball over a grateful Arsenal crossbar. Such was the impasse, that it was inevitable that Emery would make a change and on came Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi replacing Lacazette and Stephan Lichtsteiner.

The two subs added a new impetus, never far apart as they pressed forward in search of the elusive goal. David Wagner must be very concerned about his sides Premier League status and it’s well known that few of those in the bottom three in December escape the drop.

For Emery, it’s a defensive jigsaw that is becoming something of a crisis. The casualty list grows by the day and his options are limited, making it ever more likely that Arsenal will have to reinforce despite indications of a genuine reluctance at board level. If Arsenal manages to continue their current run and emerge from December in reasonably good shape, new additions are crucial to make the final push in the new year.

Either that or fringe players may need to be pushed into the spotlight as a matter of necessity. Koscielny made a return to the subs bench but Emery will have to tread very carefully to avoid further damage to the player after such a serious injury and lengthy lay off.

For those about to rip into Arsenal for their fluctuating form, they have played 4 games in 10 days. The games against Spurs and United must have drained the intensity tanks during a spell where the squad has become smaller through injuries. It may be a very patched up defence for the game against Southampton and Arsenal will now have to limp towards the transfer window, whilst considering a hefty spending programme to maintain their push for a champions league slot.
