According to the Sun, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is prepared to sell seven players in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners are having an extraordinary season in the Premier League as they sit at the summit of the league table with an eight-point lead over defending champions Manchester City. If they keep up their current form, clinching their first Premier League title in 20 years is well within their sights.
However, Arsenal’s inability to advance in cup competitions was a reflection of their lack of squad depth. They currently do not have the prowess to compete for both the league and cup titles.
As per the Sun, the north London club will consider transfer offers for seven players, including club-record signing Nicolas Pepe. After failing to have a significant influence during the previous three seasons at the Emirates, the club allowed him to join Ligue 1 side Nice on loan until the end of this campaign.
The Ivory Coast international is not part of Arteta’s plans for the future, and the club are keen on offloading his hefty salary off their wage bill. Not many clubs in the world would be willing to pay such a lucrative wage, therefore Arsenal could be forced to terminate his contract.
The Sun also claim that the Gunners are willing to listen to transfer offers for Albert Sambi Lokonga, Nuno Tavares, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Pablo Mari, Alex Runarrson, and Cedric Soares who are all out on loan.
Arsenal Fever View:
Arteta deploys an almost identical set of players week in and week out in the Premier League. Although that has brought success in this campaign, the same strategy may not be sustainable moving forward.
As the Gunners edge closer to a return to the Champions League, it is crucial that they reinforce the squad in the summer transfer window. And that could only be possible if they offload several fringe players.
With just ten games left, the destiny of the league title is in the hands of Arteta’s side. If they emerge as champions, the club could attract a higher caliber of players in the summer.
