Arsenal Team News against Newcastle: Madueke, Odegaard

Martin Odegaard

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta make the tough trip to St James’ Park as they face Newcastle United on Sunday. Who are the players that could be missing out on this game?

The Gunners kick started their EFL Cup campaign with an easy 2-0 win over Port Vale during the week. Now, they turn their attention towards the Premier League in what will be one of the most physical and bruising games they are going to play.

As for the team news, there is one big absentee in the form of Noni Madueke. The Englishman has made a positive start to the season but is out for a couple of months with a knee injury. Apart from the quality that the former Chelsea man provides, his ability to cover for Bukayo Saka will be sorely missed by the club.

Some good news on the injury front is the potential return of captain Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian is said to be back in training and could be part of the matchday squad that faces the Magpies. Arteta would also be happy to have the likes of Ben White back in action.

Arsenal Fever View:

Though it would be tempting to start Eberechi Eze in a central role against Newcastle, it is likely that the manager takes the safer option. That would be to play Mikel Merino to take on the physicality in the home midfield, particularly from someone like Joelinton.

As for the visitors, they need to focus on rotating the squad to keep everyone fresh given the sheer number of games coming up. This is particularly important in the case of a Saka who is returning from an injury.

Overplaying the winger will have long-term consequences that can be avoided. This is going to be a test of Arteta who finally has a squad that has depth in each and every position. The Spaniard likes to have control in game, but it has to be done with the fitness of the players in mind.

Arsenal will have to do really well to get any positive result from this game. Having almost lost to Manchester City last week, the Gunners would want to get back on track. With Liverpool seemingly running away with the league title even at this early stage, it is essential to keep the pressure going.
