Arsenal midfielder Jorginho slammed for poor display

Jorginho

Arsenal midfielder Jorginho was at the heart of Italy’s midfield as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to England in Naples on Thursday night.

Despite an impressive start from the hosts, the Three Lions broke the deadlock within the first quarter of an hour. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka delivered an excellent cross into the box, which was bundled home by Declan Rice.

It did not take long for Gareth Southgate’s side to double their advantage. Harry Kane’s emphatic penalty into the bottom corner put the visitors in the driving seat going into the break. Although the Italians did pull one goal back in the second half, the visitors were able to cling on to their slender lead and secure all three points.

Saka had a good outing, but his club teammate, Jorginho, had a performance that was in sharp contrast to his. While rating the performance, the Guardian only managed to give a mere 5/10 for the former Chelsea star. They wrote:

“Italy’s conductor was unable to cope with Bellingham’s pressing. He repeatedly lost the ball and looked powerless against England’s physicality in midfield during the first half.”

Arsenal Fever View:

The Three Lions’ physicality and aggressive pressure seemed to be too much for Jorginho. He never looked settled in the entire game and was unable to exhibit his true qualities.

However, none of Roberto Mancini’s men look to be on top of their games. The 31-year-old was one of many players who appeared exhausted on the pitch. Arsenal fans should not be worried by this one-off game.

Since his move to the Emirates in the winter transfer window, the Italian has provided vital depth to the Gunners’ midfield. He has started six games in all competitions, scoring a crucial goal in their 4-2 win against Aston Villa.

The Gunners have the youngest squad in the league this season. Therefore, an experienced player like Jorginho could be an asset in their quest for the Premier League title.
