Ramsey and Lacazette start, Strongest Predicted Arsenal lineup (4-3-3) to face Manchester United

Alexandre Lacazette

Arsenal have the opportunity to enhance their top-four prospects when they entertain Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium in tomorrow’s late kick-off.

The north London side recently suffered a setback in the Europa League round of 16 after a shock 3-1 defeat to Rennes but they need to brush off the disappointment for the visit of Ole’s team.

The Gunners are currently just one point behind United in the league standings for the fourth spot and they need to capitalise on the good home form to leapfrog them in the pursuit of Champions League football for next term.

Formation: 4-3-3

Predicted Lineup:

Bernd Leno should rightfully return between the sticks for the Premier League clash after being unused substituted in the midweek European loss to Rennes. The German has been in good form of late and recently made some top-notch saves in the derby draw against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

In the defence, Unai Emery may consider Ainsley Maitland-Niles at right-back, given the youngster should offer more mobility to tackle the threat presented from either Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial.

Similarly, we are predicting Sead Kolasinac to feature ahead of Nacho Monreal on the opposite after the Spaniard was guilty of a couple of mistakes in the recent Rennes defeat.

At the heart of the backline, Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis should feature, despite the latter’s disappointing red card in the Europa League. The duo are no doubt the best central defensive combination at the moment.

In the midfield, Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi should feature from the off, considering Lucas Torreira is serving a three-match domestic suspension after his straight red card against Spurs. Guendouzi, in particular, needs a better showing after his ignorance in tracking back for Ismaila Sarr’s goal in midweek.

In the attack front, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi should maintain their positions on the right and left wing respectively with the recent run of good form and we are anticipating Aaron Ramsey to slot into the number 10 position between them.

Alexandre Lacazette should get the chance to lead the line for the second-straight game, given he has been the better performing striker when compared to Aubameyang since February. The Frenchman should be fresh after the midweek absence due to his European suspension.

Martin Keown explains how Arsenal can end Manchester United’s away winning streak

Former Arsenal star Martin Keown has said that the Gunners need to put more pressure on the Manchester United defence in tomorrow’s late Premier League kick-off at the Emirates Stadium.

The north London side had recently been building momentum with four unbeaten matches before the shock 3-1 defeat at Rennes in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16.

Still, the players need to regroup quickly with an important league fixture against United and Keown has given his piece of opinion on the same.

In a report covered by The Mail, the former Gunners defender has urged the Gunners to put more pressure on the Red Devils backline in order to induce mistakes.

He added that manager Unai Emery should go with the same formation which clicked against Chelsea earlier in the year, where Aaron Ramsey played behind a strike force consisting of both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

“Their defence can be exposed if they are put under pressure. Emery’s best chance of success is to return to the tactics which proved so successful in the 2-0 win over Chelsea,” he penned.

“That day, Arsenal used Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette as inside forwards with Aaron Ramsey breaking from midfield and forcing opponents into mistakes.”

Lacazette played no role in the recent European defeat at Roazhon Park with an European suspension and this should likely witness him earn a starting role against the Red Devils.

The same can be said about Ramsey, who showed a good level of intensity during the dying stages of the Rennes game and Aubameyang probably remains the doubtful figure to feature.

Aubameyang has lost his scoring touch with just one goal since the start of February and this only hampers his chances of partnering Lacazette, which has been a rare occurrence of late.

Arsenal Player Ratings: Koscielny and Cech offer some comfort in defeat to Rennes

Predicted Arsenal Line-up

An away fixture is always a nervy affair for fans but the indicators were that Arsenal would get a foothold in this Europa league first leg contest against Rennes, because of the supposed gulf in class.

Rennes are rooted mid-table in Ligue 1 and found qualification from their group a struggle. The Gunners had not lost an away game to a French side on the previous 12 occasions and qualified without much of a problem but all this counts for little when the big stage beckons.

So it proved, as the unfortunate dismissal of Sokratis, led Arsenal to reshape and rethink but sadly they made basic mistakes that would end in a hefty defeat. Needless tackles, free kicks and missed opportunities meant that Rennes would seize the initiative from a naive Arsenal side who conspired to make the winning of this trophy almost impossible.

Thankfully they have a precious away goal but they will have to score two at the Emirates with no reply and that doesn’t ease the concerns of the most die-hard fan.

Here are Player Ratings:

Cech – 7 – The veteran showed why he was the best keeper in the Premier League at one point, with a collection of superb saves, notably from HatemBenn Arfa. Without him, things could have been a lot worse.

Sokratis – 4 – The defender used less hunch and went with more crunch. I love the physicality of his game but on a yellow card, he blundered in like a novice. His sending off put Arsenal in a tailspin. Very poor show.

Mustafi – 6 – Neither exceptional nor disappointing. Did his bit at the back, although the tide was overwhelming. Offered little to the attack but that’s not his responsibility.

Koscielny – 8 – Narrowly takes Man of the Match from Cech. Both are the reason that Arsenal have any chance at all of salvaging this tie. Key clearances, interventions and decision making. Showed experience and class as everything crumbled around him.

Monreal – 5 – Had a good first half up until the equaliser but then the game turned and his lack of pace was a problem. This is likely to be his last season. Good going forward but he can’t recover his position and is past his best of a season or so ago.

Torreira – 6 – Worked tirelessly but not able to grab the game by the scruff or influence it in a positive way. After the sending off, he was more fire blanket than a fire hose.

Xhaka – 4 – Another duff showing which allows people like me to get on his case. Poor control, lacking concentration, sloppy passes and gun-ho tackles which could have cost Arsenal another player. He needs to be more consistent, good one game, shocking the next.

Ozil – 7 – The midfielder did really well, involved in the attack, finding space and threading moves together until the dismissal crimped his flow. In the second 45, Ozil became key with his ability to hold the ball when the pressure was on. The German put in a shift in attack and defence but the latter is not his strong point. Encouraging from the Emery/Ozil perspective.

Iwobi – 7 – Arsenal’s best player in the first half and certainly their main threat.
Fortuitous opening goal but nearly provided a second shortly after, his withdrawal left the Gunners flat and when he, Ozil and Aubameyang went off, it showed lack of ambition.

Mkhitaryan – 6 – Wasn’t exactly in the groove at the start but suffered terribly as a right back and will have nightmares for weeks to come. Did nothing to suggest resistance at the back or creativity going forward. Disappointing.

Aubameyang – 5 – His form seems to have deserted him like his touch. Never felt like he had a goal in him at any stage, unable to hold the ball and bring others into the game. Didn’t appear to have the know-how or appetite for this encounter and as the game went on, he didn’t merit being left on the pitch.

Sokratis sending off gives Rennes the advantage over chaotic Arsenal

Unai Emery

As defeats go, a 3-1 away defeat is bad enough but when you consider it is to a mid-table side Ligue 1, it’s even more annoying. The main reason for this defeat was the dismissal of Sokratis, who on a yellow card went ploughing into Sarr and off he went. However, there were other factors that were evident for all to see.

The amount of careless free kicks given away in the Gunners own half in key positions, was always likely to catch up with them. There’s no excuse for three things at this level, sloppy play, lack of concentration and the inability to take chances and Arsenal were guilty of all three.

It all looked so good in the early stages and the Emirates club were given a dream start. Just 4 minutes in and Iwobi received a ball from a useful exchange involving Xhaka and Monreal. He turned and offered a low curling cross, come shot, which deceived everyone and ended up in the back of the net.

From that point Arsenal looked good for two or three, with Ozil finding space at will, Iwobi leading the French defenders a merry dance and Aubameyang appearing in the right places. Around the 33rd minute Sokratis tangled with Ben Arfa and earned his first booking, within another 7 he’d be out of the game altogether and the Gunners would have to swap personnel to stop the rolling tide.

Emery wasn’t to know but his adjustments wouldn’t work and his side seemed intent on crumbling under pressure. The Sokratis sending-off free kick was taken by Bourigeaud. It was an innocuous effort that went straight into the wall but then came back to him.
Danger over or so it seemed. His second effort was a right-footed scorcher that flew into the top left corner and even if Cech had a twin minding goal with him, neither would have been able to keep this rasping effort out.

At this point, Arsenal still tried to make a game if it, Ozil manufactured some space and picked out Aubameyang, who quickly realised Mkhitaryan was the better option but the Armenian fired over from distance. It was quite bizarre from that point, Mkhitaryan somehow drifted into the right back position. It’s not clear if it was his own decision or Emery’s but it was a bad call.

Half time and 1-1 wasn’t a total disaster, all Emery had to decide was how best to play out the remaining 45 minutes. My own preferred option was to park the bus and hope that Aubameyang could be fed the occasional ball to score another. At kick off, it was noticeable that Mkhitaryan was still at right back when surely Xhaka would have been a better option if all felt disjointed and inevitable.

Rennes obviously sensed that the reconfiguration and player shortage, would be to their advantage and looked purposeful and energised with Zeffane, Ben Arfa and Bourigeaud fancying the job at hand. Guendouzi was drafted into battle at the expense of Iwobi, who had been Arsenal’s biggest threat and best player up to that point.

Then Sarr began to find his game, tearing down the right as if he was fuelled by the wind, placing the fear of God in the heart of Arsenal’s defence. Only Koscielny looked as if he could cope with the brewing onslaught. On 59 minutes, Cech was required to make a save from the emerging threat of Sarr. It looked more likely at this point that the veteran keeper would be much busier than expected and one just hoped it was one of his better performances.

The pressure had been mounting and Arsenal were starting to look slightly ragged, with Mkhitaryan having been turned inside out and Monreal off the pace. It was almost inevitable that another goal was coming and in the 65th minute, the North London club assisted Rennes in every respect to increase the deficit. Bensebaini hit a directionless ball forward which it appeared the Arsenal players thought would go out of play.

Zeffane gave chase and whipped in a dangerous looking cross from the right which deflected off Monreal and past Cech. The big keeper would have more luck from Ben Arfa minutes later after a failed Mustafi clearance. It came at the shot-stopper from a good 20 yards out and was destined for the left corner but Cech showed his class with a sprawling, fingertip save.

Ramsey came on for Ozil. Who due to the changes wasn’t getting the opportunities or space that he had before Rennes equaliser and there was a growing feeling that Arsenal just weren’t capable of damage limitation?. Arsenal had been giving away free kicks all night long and had taken to surrendering space with every attack. 2-1 wouldn’t have been that bad a result considering but if it were more than that, it could make for uncomfortable viewing at the Emirates.

Then in the 79th minute, Emery made his last bid to keep things heading in the right direction by replacing an out of salts Aubameyang with Kolasinac but it would count for nothing. Silicki surged forward and provided the perfect cross for the unmarked Sarr who powered the ball past Cech. It was no more than the Rennes player deserved for all his commitment and endeavour and Arsenal now have it all to do at the Emirates where two goals are the minimum requirement without reply but with no Sokratis, that job may be even more difficult than usual.

‘He has really let us down’: some Arsenal fans are unimpressed with forward’s performance at Rennes

Aubameyang

A few Arsenal supporters were unimpressed with the performance of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang upfront during the recent Europa League round of 16 clash against Rennes on the road.

The Gunners went into the game with a four-match unbeaten streak and they had the opportunity to maintain the run with another solid performance.

However, things went pear-shaped after the sending off of Sokratis before the break and they eventually succumbed to a disappointing 3-1 defeat despite opening the scoresheet in the third minute.

Following the game, a section of the supporters voiced their concern over the form of Aubameyang, who has bagged the solitary goal for the club since the beginning of January.

https://twitter.com/ScottyBoyGooner/status/1103766649587621888

Aubameyang has looked short of confidence and form over the past month, and this was quite evident during the recent derby against Tottenham Hotspur where he squandered a late penalty chance in a 1-1 stalemate.

With another repeat performance at Rennes, he is unlikely to receive the favour of a starting role against Manchester United for the weekend, and it would not be surprising, should Alexandre Lacazette lead the line after missing out the Rennes trip through suspension.

Elsewhere, Aaron Ramsey could be entrusted with the number 10 role on Sunday after the Welshman showed a positive workrate during the dying stages against Rennes where he tried to track the run of Ismaila Sarr when the likes of Matteo Guendouzi seemed disinterested for the same.

Arsenal are currently just one point behind Manchester United in the pursuit of the final Champions League spot, and the weekend’s game should be crucial to deciding whether they can remain in touch in the top four race.

‘This is dreadful’: some Arsenal fans slam midfielder for lack of effort against Rennes

Unai Emery Arsenal

A section of the Arsenal fans were unimpressed with the performance of Matteo Guendouzi during the backend of the Europa League round of 16 first leg clash against Rennes.

The north London side managed to open the scoring within three minutes with a fortuitous shot from Alex Iwobi and thereafter, they had chances to double the scores.

However, it was Rennes, who equalised before the break at Roazhon Park, but that did not occur before Sokratis was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in the space of eight minutes.

After the interval, the hosts were the better side with numerous chances to find the net and fortune eventually favoured them with an own goal from Nacho Monreal.

From then, Unai Emery decided to go on the defensive with Alex Iwobi, Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hauled off the field but this did not help after Rennes scored from a brilliant counter-attack before injury time.

Following the game, a few Gunners faithful were critical about the performance of Guendouzi, in particular, despite him coming on as a second half substitute.

In the lead-up to the third Rennes goal, the Frenchman had the opportunity to track the run of Ismaila Sarr, but he was rather found jogging on the field with no effort to get to the Senegalese.

A few supporters even gave the example of fellow substitute Aaron Ramsey, who nearly managed to intercept Sarr’s strike despite being 15 yards behind Guendouzi at one stage of the counter-attack.

Arsenal’s immediate focus returns to the Premier League with a home game against Manchester United this weekend and the outcome could be critical to the top-four hopes.

Guendouzi is likely to feature alongside Granit Xhaka in midfield with Lucas Torreira serving a three-match domestic suspension, but he surely needs to come up with a better showing than at Rennes against a resurgent United side.

Mkhitaryan and Ozil start, Strongest Predicted Arsenal lineup (4-2-3-1) to face Rennes

Mkhitaryan

Arsenal make the trip to Roazhon Park for tonight’s Europa League round of 16 clash against Rennes. Unai Emery’s side are currently unbeaten in four successive games and they can extend the streak with a strong showing in France to enhance their prospects of reaching the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted Lineup:

Petr Cech has been the regular choice between the sticks for the Europa League and he should feature in goal against former club Rennes.

In the backline, Shkodran Mustafi could get the drop after his mistake for the penalty in the north London derby and this could witness the experienced Stephan Lichtsteiner replace him on the right side of the defence.

Likewise, Sead Kolasinac should feature ahead of Nacho Monreal on the opposite end after being rested for the derby. Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, however, should maintain their central defensive positions as they remain the best combination present for the moment.

In the midfield, Granit Xhaka should undoubtedly feature from the off and he could be partnered by Matteo Guendouzi. Lucas Torreira seems the preferred pick, considering his three-match domestic suspension, but Guendouzi’s appearance in the pre-match press conference suggests that he may feature from the off.

In the attack, Unai Emery should stick with Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the left and right side of the attack, given the duo remain the best natural combination to feature in those positions. Mkhitaryan, in particular, has shone with two goals and three assists in the past three games.

Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil should replace Aaron Ramsey in the number 10 position after only making a late substitute appearance in the north London derby. In this case, Ramsey will be the likelier starter for the Manchester United game over the weekend.

Upfront, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should lead the line with Alexandre Lacazette due to serve the second of his three-match European suspension at Rennes. Young graduate Eddie Nketiah could be called off the bench if required towards the end.

Arsenal need to seize control by getting a result at Rennes

Predicted Arsenal Line-up

No room for error or mistakes, as Arsenal travel to take on Rennes at Roazhon Park in Brittany on Thursday. This is Rennes’ most successful campaign in Europe but at times it’s been a struggle.

Rennes complicated their Group K endeavours, by sustaining three successive defeats but they eventually took the runners-up slot, thanks to victories Jablonec, Astana and an exciting victory over Real Betis.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery, has unfinished business with Rennes. He lost his penultimate game as the coach at Paris Saint-Germain to Rennes (0-2) and will be keen to come out on top in this one, which has far more important for him.

The Gunners are in their 25th Uefa fixture that involves French opposition and have never lost any of the 12 away matches. They have just rediscovered a competitive spirit that has kept them on course for the fourth place in the premiership.

In terms of the side that Emery may field against Rennes, Lacazette will not play a part, so the main striker’s role will fall to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang has not quite been himself since the injury but needs to clear up in this first leg if Arsenal are to gain the upper hand. Mkhitaryan and Ozil may be the creative force in the middle, with Ramsey being kept aside for the Manchester United game.

Cech will resume his position between the posts, Kolasinac may get the nod in a back four comprising of the Bosnian, Sokratis, Monreal, Koscielny.

Guendouzi Xhaka and Torreira are fighting for just two positions and I feel that the first two may be in line for a starting position. Iwobi would grab the final place for his contribution over the last few games and its clear Emery trusts him, although his final ball is sometimes wayward.

Arsenal have to snuff out this leg and maintain their concentration with the threat of Ismaila Sarr, M’Baye Niang and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Predicted team: Cech, Kolasinac, Sokratis, Koscielny, Monreal, Guendouzi, Xhaka,
Mkhitaryan, Ozil, Iwobi, Aubameyang. Prediction: 3-0

Arsenal and Emery’s immediate future will be decided in the coming weeks

Arsenal Stadium

Unai Emery and his Arsenal side, are at a defining moment of the season. All the ups and downs, opportunities and key moments, will become relevant to the sum total of this term in just a matter of months.

With just 9 games left in the Premiership, with a maximum of 27 points at stake and two encounters against Rennes in the Europa League, it’s all to play for. Depending on those outcomes and the performance of others, Emery will have to decide which competition gives him the greater opportunity to make the cut for the Champions League.

The battle for fourth may go on for a while longer but the immediate priority of the Europa league is paramount to keep his options open. Defeat and an exit would mean relying on an unpredictable outcome in the PL.

At present, Europe presents the best option to achieve his goals and make the season count for something. Failure in both, is expected in many quarters, especially within the media but one has to take into account, that Emery is in his first season and before a ball was kicked, expectations were reasonably low.

After a number of great displays, notably against Spurs and Chelsea, those expectations grew but the draw against Spurs at Wembley means that Arsenal have it all to do, with a crunch game against United this weekend. Those missed opportunities against the bin scavengers and dropped points may be crucial to the eventual outcome as the clubs chasing third and fourth look for maximum totals.

Arsenal’s run-in is fairly kind but don’t expect any favours, because it is littered with potential banana skins just waiting for poor performances or catalogue of errors. Wolves, Newcastle, Everton and Watford all pose a threat and we can’t forget Brighton who are in the mix for relegation. The obvious incentive of a Champions League slot will help the Gunners cause in the summer transfer window and should they fail to do so, budgets will be tailored accordingly.

This makes this weekend’s game against United vital. A win would see them back in the hunt with credible credentials, a draw would simply keep them in the hunt and a defeat would hand United the advantage. Solskjær’s United are a clear threat to Emery’s ambitions, managing to grind out results and hit a good run of form in equal measure and at the moment, they are the favourites, but that could change if Arsenal turn the screws on Sunday.

Of course, in between, there’s the small matter of Rennes, who are currently 10th in Ligue 1 and are experiencing an indifferent season. If a draw could be viewed as kind, then this is it. Arsenal will have to get a decent result away and lay the foundations for the return at the Emirates but it’s extremely doable.

It’s a big week and after this, every game will have a crucial feel to it. Any points dropped in the PL could have devastating consequences, any slip-ups in Europe could do the same. Emery will continue his rotation policy and although I don’t personally like it and have been outspoken of its use, it’s the smart thing to do from here on in.

Ramsey and Ozil, Guendouzi, Torreira and Xhaka are all candidates for a shuffle and at the back, expect Mustafi and Koscielny to interchange but hopefully not Sokratis. These are exciting and nervy times but within six games, we may get some idea of what the season holds for us and Emery will have his final decision to make. Which is more important?

Unai Emery desperate to sign highly-rated Belgian attacker

Unai Emery

Arsenal boss Unai Emery is desperate to pursue the signature of Yannick Carrasco from Dalian Yifang when the season comes to a close, The Express reports.

The Belgium international had been earmarked as one of the targets for Emery during the winter transfer window but a move did not materialise with Yifang declining the loan approach from the Gunners.

The north London side thereafter went on to pursue Denis Suarez from Barcelona on a temporary deal but Emery did admit that the club were seeking to recruit at least two more players.

According to The Express, the Gunners could return for Carrasco when the transfer window reopens with Emery desperate to integrate the attacker into the club’s ranks.

However, the Capital outfit are likely to face competition from the Serie A in the form of Inter and AC Milan, while it is suggested that the player’s £8.8m annual wages could prove another possible roadblock.

Elsewhere, the publication suggests that the deal may also depend on the performances of Suarez, who was recruited from Barcelona in January with the option to buy in the summer.

Emery’s side currently have the choice to sign the Spaniard permanently for £18m during the off-season, and taking that proposal may possibly end their interest in Carrasco.

Suarez had recently been brought into the Gunners ranks with his versatility to feature in both the wings and central midfield, but so far, he has yet to make a start in any competition.

That may not change in the near future with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Ozil and Alex Iwobi enjoying a good run of form, though Suarez has hinted through the club’s Youtube channel that he wants to stay for the long-term.
