‘I have to worry’, Arsenal ace admits he could leave the club if Emery can’t assure gametime

Unai Emery Arsenal

Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner has said that he has yet to make his mind up over a new contract with Arsenal beyond the current campaign.

The 35-year-old was Unai Emery’s first signing of the summer after joining on a free transfer and he has since garnered 20 starts in the Premier League and Europa League alone.

Despite this, the veteran has recently struggled for gametime with just one start in the past month, and he has now admitted that he is partly concerned by the situation.

Speaking exclusively to Neue Zurcher Zeitung, the right-sided defender acknowledged that he is very happy to have joined the Gunners, but that does not mean that he would want to remain a squad player.

He added that he needs to keep playing regularly to remain in contention for next year’s European Championship with the national side, and the failure to receive assurances of the same from Unai Emery may witness him leave on a free this summer.

“This will need time. The fact that I play at a top club at the age of 35 says enough. There have been talks [with Arsenal]. We have to see if it suits both sides,” he told the Swiss publication.

“Arsenal is a big club, I feel very happy. But I want to play regularly with regard to the European Championships. It was okay this year. But if the coach says that he no longer counts on me, I have to worry.”

Lichtsteiner has struggled to make a strong impression with the Gunners this term and this was very much expected, considering he has entered the twilight of his professional career.

Nonetheless, it appears that the Swiss captain wants regular gametime to stay put, and it will be interesting to see what Emery decides when the season concludes.

At the moment, Ainsley Maitland-Niles has evolved into the first-choice for the right wing-back role in a changed 3-4-1-2 formation, but the Gunners don’t have much quality backup behind him.

With Hector Bellerin sidelined with a long-term knee injury, the club are left with Lichtsteiner, Carl Jenkinson and Shkodran Mustafi to assume the deputy role, but none of them have sufficiently impressed.

Jenkinson has perhaps been the better of the trio with the odd appearance this year, but his future is likewise hanging in the balance with his contract expiring in the summer.

Arsenal could solve the concern by pursuing another recruit, but the reported £45m transfer kitty could be better served in sorting out the main conundrum which has lied at the heart of the backline.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery should offload the deadwood this summer

Unai Emery

Arsenal coach, Unai Emery, has much to contemplate after the season is concluded and there will, no doubt, be a flurry of activity in the summer, with additions likely and a host of outgoings.

Just who will remain is subject to conjecture but there are a few candidates that come to mind and a few that are borderline decisions. The fans have been debating a number of players for a while on social media and certain candidates keep appearing on the list.

So, let’s trudge through the names and I’ll add my ten pence worth, of who is likely to stay, who’s likely to be pushed off the plank and who may just survive. With Cech’s retirement, Leno is the obvious number one choice but do we need another keeper? We have Emiliano Martinez, Matt Macey and Dejan Iliev at present, all of which are due to end their contracts this year.

We do need a solid, seasoned reserve keeper for the right price and I assume that Ospina will finally part company. Burnley’s Nick Pope has been suggested(as per Sun) and that would probably mean two of the three other keepers moving on. Of those listed, I’d stick with Macey, who seems far more likely to make the grade, with Iliev as my second option.

Now, in terms of outgoings let’s look at who we don’t need, who can do without and those barely hanging on by their white knuckles. One name that comes to mind would be Mohamed Elneny, who has never really established himself under two managers. He’s seen more as a squad player than a first choice and just doesn’t fit Emery’s or Arsenal’s profile.

Moving on, Shkodran Mustafi, who promised so much, really needs to salvage his career elsewhere. The problem with the German is his inability to see danger and his biggest downfall is his recklessness. He spends more time on the grass than the pitch sprinklers and never truly looks comfortable as a central defender. For someone of his experience, he lacks that certain assertiveness and quality.

Others that need to go are Carl Jenkinson who appears to have absolutely no chance of anchoring a permanent position in the team. Callum Chambers, despite giving a good account of himself at Fulham, he may well have kicked his last ball for Arsenal. Stephan Lichsteiner also needs to be dispatched because of his lack of pace and quality

Koscielny and Monreal may just edge another season. It’s clear that their Arsenal days are numbered but the lack of finances may help their cause. Aaron Ramsey is off to Italy after his well-documented contract fiasco but that presents an opportunity for others including academy players.

Xhaka may have just done enough to survive but next term, he may need to be more consistent and rid himself of the errors that taint some of his stronger performances. Mesut Ozil divides opinion but which club will even entertain the idea of paying that huge salary. In this case, Emery may have to let the clock run down on the midfielders Arsenal career, due to expire in 2021.

The only realistic avenue would be America of Japan but his value has depreciated this term along with his dwindling appearances. I’d stick with him until next summer and give him one last chance to make a case for himself. Denis Suarez could be on his way out of the Emirates unless he plays a big part in the remaining games of Arsenal’s campaign.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has done enough since his return from injury to suggest his worth and he could be vital to the Gunners new look next season. Danny Welbeck is surely done at Arsenal and had he not become injured, he would already be in another colour shirt.
Only a miracle can save his Arsenal career.

On a more positive note, the likes of Alex Iwobi, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson, Cohen Bramall, Joe Willock, Bukaya Sako And Ben Sheaf are all highly fancied to feature more regularly, with the first two almost seen as regular first-team players because of their appearances this season. With a few key additions, the north London club could be set for a decent second season under Unai Emery.

€20m-rated defender speaks out amid Arsenal transfer speculation

Arsenal are one of those clubs who are linked with almost every player that is available on the market. There are some rumors that seem a little more practical than the others.

One such rumor that has been making the rounds is the club’s reported interest in Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico with Metro recently claiming that the Gunners are leading the race to sign him.

The report further claimed that the left-back has been touted as a possible long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal. Now, the defender himself has spoken about the reported interest.

When queried about being linked to Arsenal and a host of other clubs, this is what he had to tell El Mundi Deportivo(as per Metro):

“I am enjoying life and football. We are privileged as footballers.”

“Our work is something fascinating and something we love to do. I enjoy playing for the national team and my club. I can’t think of what’s coming, that’s disrespectful to my club.”

The defender is also being linked to Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona and is rated at around €20million (£17m), as reported by Metro. If the Gunners are able to beat the competition from those clubs, it will be quite a coup for the club.

Tagliafico has been very impressive ever since he joined the Dutch giants in January of 2018. He has played a major role in Ajax’s champions league campaign this season where they knocked out Real Madrid in the Round of 16.

Arsenal currently have two options at left back. Both Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac have featured in this position for the North London club. What makes the interest in Tagliafico tangible is manager Unai Emery and his experimentation with different formations.

He has shown that he can play with a three-man defense as well as a traditional four-man defense. In the three-man defense, Monreal can slot in perfectly in the role of a center back.

Perhaps if Monreal does leave the club this summer, then it makes for the Gunners to sign someone with a profile like Tagliafico. The Argentine left-back has shown that he can handle his own at the elite level of European football and his jump to the Premier League should be smooth if he comes to the Emirates.

Kolasinac has been highly effective in the role of a wing back but there are still some questions about his defensive ability. And given the propensity of Emery to change his system, Tagliafico would be a perfect addition to the Gunners team. His attacking prowess combined with a defensive awareness makes him the perfect modern full back.

Arsenal have already identified 21-year-old playmaker to replace Denis Suarez

Unai Emery Arsenal

Arsenal could reportedly revive their interest in signing Christopher Nkunku from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer with Denis Suarez having failed to impress following his mid-season loan move.

Nkunku was earmarked as one of the potential targets during the winter transfer window, but the failure to convince Les Parisiens into a sale meant that Suarez was pursued from Barcelona on loan with the option to buy.

According to The Sun, the north London giants are said to have retained their pursuit of Nkunku after scouts kept a close watch on his proceedings during Les Parisiens’ 4-0 win over Dijon earlier in the month.

Nkunku, who has made just 10 league starts for Les Parisiens this term, has shown his versatility of playing in different midfield positions, while also featuring on the right side of the attack.

As such, he suits the type of player Emery is after, and it remains to be whether the club can convince Les Parisiens into a sale when the transfer window reopens.

Elsewhere, Suarez’s future with Arsenal could be hanging in the balance, given he has been restricted to just six substitute appearances since his winter loan move from the Camp Nou.

The ex-Manchester City graduate was highlighted as a candidate, who can take up the Aaron Ramsey role following the Welshman’s Bosman exit in the summer, but he has so far failed to convince Emery to reward him with a starting berth.

Should things remain unchanged, the club are likely to bypass the option to buy him in the summer with Nkunku now identified as the prime choice to bolster the attack front ahead of the 2019/2020 season.

‘Let them keep talking’, Arsenal star responds to speculation on his future

Predicted Arsenal Line-up

Denis Suarez was a common name among the Arsenal fans during the January transfer window as the midfielder was linked with a move to the club throughout the January transfer window.

That ended with him signing a loan deal with the North London club that had an option to buy at the end of it. Since then, he has mostly been coming off the bench.

This has led to speculation over his future at the Emirates. The Sun reported that manager Unai Emery had reservations over his physical quality in adapting to the Premier League.

And as a result, the report states that the boss was thinking of sending the midfielder back to Barcelona at the end of his loan spell.

The Spaniard seems to have responded to these reports, as the midfielder responded with a message of his own. According to Metro, he posted a photo on Instagram of him training with the caption:

“Let them keep talking.”

It can be said that this was aimed at the papers that were reporting about him earlier. And the truth is that there are still quite a few games to be played in the season and the Spaniard has the chance to come good.

Arsenal are still in the race for the top four and have a chance to win the Europa League as well. For a club to be successful in these pursuits, it is necessary to have a big squad and one that can perform when called upon.

This is precisely where Suarez can come in handy as he has the talent to make a difference. The Gunners fans will be hoping that he can justify the club bringing him in the first place.

Right now, due to the international break, the Gunners are in Dubai for a training camp where they will also play a friendly game. The club will come up against Al-Nasr Dubai SC and this will be a good chance for Suarez to show what he can do on the pitch.

Having already played under Emery, it is clear that the man knows what Suarez can provide to the team and he has brought him in for a season. He will be hoping that the midfielder can come good in the remaining games.

‘This young boy is fire’, Aubameyang impressed with this young Arsenal striker

Aubameyang

Arsenal have always been a club that have supported young players and this season has been no different with Unai Emery affording chances to some young prospects.

There are still some hidden talents who haven’t yet made the transition to the senior level and it seems one of them have caught the attention of Arsenal’s star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang was replying to a Twitter post on Folarin Balogun the young striker, where he said: “This young boy is fire.”

Balogun has been working with the Gabonese international and that is shown in his goal scoring rate this season as he has 22 goals from 23 games for the Under-18 team. Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, the youngster said:

“I am the sort of striker that likes to play on the shoulder of the last defender and make runs behind them, similar to the way that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang plays.”

“I’ve trained a few times with the first team and I feel that I’ve benefited from being involved with them, especially when playing against experienced defenders which forces you to find different ways of getting in on goal as what works at lower levels does not always work against them.”

Balogun has been very impressive in his time with the youth team and it is predicted that he will feature for the first team sooner rather than later.

What makes his path to the first team a little hard is the presence of Aubameyang and Alexander Lacazette. This along with Eddie Nketiah, another talented youngster in the first team, makes it hard for Balogun to get a look in.

If anything, it is a possibility that Balogun will be given a chance next season in the Arsenal first team. There are a few games remaining in the season but to see the youngster play is a little far-fetched.

It is also better for the development of the youngster to play at the youth level and improve his game. Once the manager feels that he is ready to make the next step, he can be brought into the team. This will ensure that Balogun is able to fire for the first team and there will not be too much pressure on him as well.

Arsenal resurrect interest in signing Portuguese winger from La Liga giants

Arsenal are reportedly considering a fresh approach to sign Gelson Martins from Atletico Madrid in the summer after witnessing his impressive run of form with loan club AS Monaco.

The Portuguese winger joined Atleti on a free transfer from Sporting last summer after he had rescinded his contract with the latter due to a training ground incident.

Martins thereafter struggled to make a meaningful impact for Atleti with just one goal across all competitions, but he has changed his fortunes since his temporary move to Monaco in January.

In the eight games for the club, he has already amassed three goals and two assists, and this form appears to have caught the eye of the Gunners.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola,  Unai Emery’s side are said to have renewed their long-term interest in Martins after watching the player’s progress in the French Ligue 1.

The report adds that any attempt to sign him may have to wait until Atleti and Sporting manage to reach a compensation over the transfer fee for the player’s transfer last summer.

Atleti are said to have offered around £13m for the winger but that has not been accepted by Sporting, who could ask FIFA’s intervention to resolve the dispute.

With Aaron Ramsey parting ways with the club on a free transfer, the Gunners are sure to spend on another recruit to improve the creativity in the attack front, particularly with Denis Suarez failing to impress the manager.

In this regard, Martins is a player, who can provide the threat from the right wing position, where he has primarily featured, although his performances in Spain were not particularly great.

Arsenal are said to possess a restricted £45m budget for the summer and this should once more push the club towards pursuing bargain deals. The kitty could, however, be enhanced with Champions League qualification.

Arsenal captain explains what Unai Emery has done better than Arsene Wenger this term

Koscielny

Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny has highlighted that the team have begun producing positive results against the top six with Unai Emery at the helm of things.

The north London side struggled to compete with the elite teams during the final stages of the Arsene Wenger era, and this proved the prime reason behind the failure to make the top four in successive campaigns.

However, with Emery succeeding Wenger for the head coach role, there has been a certain improvement in terms to the performances against the top six and Koscielny has highlighted the same.

In a press conference covered by Football.London, the former France international revealed that the team have remain more measured with their approach against the elite teams with Emery being versatile with his tactical formation.

He added that the club have not quite managed to end their poor record against the top six on the road, but the team are moving on the right path with the possibility of sealing a top-four spot when the season concludes.

He said: “We have won 12 points compared to six last season. It shows how we are approaching those games differently. It is not just about attacking.

“We are more intelligent, we are more measured in our plans. We can change tactics halfway through a game, we can set up differently.

“The manager is using different formations and it shows his flexibility and the players’ too which is good I think. Of course, we still need to do better away from home in the big games but we are on the right path.”

Arsenal are currently fourth in the league standings with 60 points and they have a good opportunity to maintain or better their position as they won’t be facing any of the big six for the rest of the season.

However, the away record remains a concern regardless of the opposition at the moment and the five trips from the final eight matches could determine whether they can end the wait for Champions League football.

Elsewhere, winning the Europa League offers another route to the elite competition and they stand a chance to meet Chelsea in the final. Based on recent history, Arsenal would certainly fancy their prospects of beating the Blues in Baku.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery wants three summer signings including this 21-year-old defender

Kieran Tierney

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has reportedly earmarked Kieran Tierney as a potential option to strengthen the left-back spot during this summer’s transfer window.

The Gunners have regularly utilised the services of Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac on the left side of the backline this term, but the latter has recently enjoyed success in the wing-back position.

Still, The Mirror claims that Emery is keen on pursuing another player in Tierney for the position and the Scot could be one of three signings for the Gunners this summer.

It is added that Leicester City also hold an interest in the Hoops graduate but the Gunners could have the edge in the youngster’s pursuit, given the nature of Brendan Rodgers’ departure from Celtic mid-season to join the Foxes.

Tierney has been regularly associated with a Premier League move over the years and with the season approaching its final stages, he has once more been linked with a probable exit.

With Kolasinac showcasing a good run of form, there seems no concerns regarding his position with the team and any pursuit on Tierney could influence the future of Nacho Monreal at the club.

Unlike Kolasinac, Monreal is approaching the final stages of his career at 33 and there has been no update regarding his contract renewal beyond the summer.

Still, ESPN has recently claimed that the club have triggered a 12-month extension clause on his contract and the same should come to clarity when the campaign concludes.

Meanwhile, any move for Tierney won’t be easy, considering the left-back has more than four years remaining on his contract with the reigning Scottish champions.

Arsenal are said to have a limited budget of just £45m to spend for the summer but that could be enhanced with the possible qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Aubameyang does a black panther, as Arsenal cruise into Europa League quarters

The Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang show rolled into town last night and he did his utmost to dump audacious Rennes out of the Europa league competition on his own.

Two goals, an assist and a booking capped a very productive nights work for Arsenal’s Gabonese hotshot. The booking was for his celebration, which included donning a set of gloves and mask of the Marvel Character ‘Black Panther’.

It appears that only a nod and a wave are acceptable these days and that within two years even a raised arm and a smile may be banished from the game. This overshadowed an industrious and exciting contest, where the Gunners came out all guns blazing, determined to brush aside a hopeful Rennes.

The north London club didn’t even resemble the side that got a comprehensive trashing in France, as they established a quick, slick passing game, that immediately had the Rennes players looking like a drunk searching for paracetamol, the day after the night before.

The crowd had hardly had time to moan about the traffic when Aubameyang nudged the Gunners in front. Maitland-Niles, who is gaining in confidence and stature, whistled down the right before finding Ramsey.

The Welshman pushed the ball through the gap in defence towards the poking toe of Aubameyang for a dream start to the proceedings with just 5 minutes gone. One man even missed it by venturing off to the toilet, no doubt feeling the effects of a nervous stomach.

He then had to enquire who scored and who was involved, which is always annoying but Aubameyang and Arsenal weren’t allowing for calls of nature or any other insignificance’s as they blew Rennes away with their lightning pace.

It was to be Arsenal’s night but they will have to avoid the occasional periods of sloppy play and the wayward passes of Xhaka, who sometimes plays like twice the player he actually is and on others, like his boots are still in their boxes. Let’s not dwell on the negative here, let’s look forward, now that’s possible and focus on a good run in the Europa and Premier league.

Maitland-Niles could actually save Arsenal the price of a medium size Castle if he continues to grow and develop at this rate. Not in his preferred role of midfield, it’s the second occasion that he has stood out as a make shift right back and I’m sure he will start more frequently when Emery shuffles the pack in the summer.

He was on hand for Arsenal’s second after 15 minutes, which put Arsenal fans at ease and almost had the job done. Ramsey started the move with a ball that looked destined to go out of play but Aubameyang gave chase, delivered a prefect cross and Maitland-Niles applied the finish.

There could have been more goals, at least another two and Aubameyang should have had three for himself but just couldn’t make the most of one glorious opportunity, which looked harder to miss than to score.

Yet, he was the undeniable star of the show and displayed an appetite to overturn the deficit from the whistle.  Cutting across the pitch, sprinting around the left, dashing in from the right, forcing himself through the middle, instead of ‘The Black Panther’ he could easily have been ‘The flash’

He added to his tally in the 72nd minute when the impressive Kolasinac, whipped a low ball into the area for the striker to apply direction. It was a solid, professional performance which Unai Emery seems able to extract when necessary but let’s not get carried away just yet, there are still difficult teams in the draw and there’s the little matter of a 4th place in the premier league to contest.

It was a good evenings work and Koscielny also deserves a mention for his efforts in providing yet another clean sheet. Arsenal will now take on Napoli in the quarterfinals of the Europa League.
