It has been an eventful past few days for Arsenal fans with reports suggesting that we are closing in on the signing of Paulo Dybala and today it is no different, with Metro reporting that the Gunners are set to make a bid for Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
The 20 year old is highly rated and is among the top young midfielders in the Europe. The Croatian primarily plays as an attacking midfielder with passing ability being his main asset.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with the youngster last week after it emerged that Inter could sell the midfielder. Manchester United and Chelsea are also interested in the Croatian, but the latest reports suggest that the North London club are set to make a transfer bid for the play-maker.
Kovacic has made 25 appearances for Inter this season scoring 5 goals and the youngster has also been the most creative player for the Milan side. He also represented Croatia at last year’s World Cup, impressing one and all with his excellent passing and dribbling skills.
He plays as a central attacker and can also play on either wing, if required. His is versatile which is evident from the fact that he has played as a deep lying midfielder for Inter Milan on many occasions. He also has a great range of passing and can run at the opposition defence without breaking a sweat. There is really nothing that he cannot do, thanks to his touch and movement both on and off the ball.
However on the flip side, he cannot really defend as much as you want but as it is with all the other creative players you cannot actually expect them to defend. There is enough creativity currently at the Emirates, but I don’t think that will be the case after the Summer transfer window.
Arteta is well past his best and with Diaby as always struggling to provide a good run of games, we might actually need another central midfielder in the summer. There are also some doubts on the future of Cazorla, who has constantly been linked with Atletico this season. The Spaniard has been in wonderful form this season and I don’t see any reason on why Wenger would want to sell, but if he wants a move back then he is likely to be granted his wish.
The price that is being quoted is £17.7 million, which is just around what we paid for Cazorla and isn’t a big amount for a player who is likely to become one of the best in the future. If there are no departures in the summer, we might not need another midfielder, but if some players do leave then signing Kovacic will make perfect sense.
With the creative talent we already have, do we need another midfielder?
