Arsenal set for first departure of the summer

Jorginho

Arsenal will be making one of their first moves of the summer transfer window with the departure of Jorginho.

The Italian midfielder has been a solid addition to the Gunners squad ever since he joined from local rivals Chelsea in January 2022. The experience of the veteran and his calmness on the pitch helped bring some stability to the midfield.

According to a report from Globo Esporte, he will be going to Brazil on Thursday to complete a transfer to Flamengo. The club is participating in the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, and they want to bring in the 33-year-old before the tournament starts.

Though the Italy international’s contract is only ending at the end of June, he has decided to forego wages of around £500,000 to accelerate the transfer. This will both clubs arrange a move quicker and will benefit the player also.

Arsenal Fever View:

Over the course of three years, Jorginho has grown into a steady influence at the club and has helped a lot of the younger players. Though not the most athletic, the former Chelsea man had the intelligence and reading of the game to help set the tempo.

It will be difficult for the north Londoners to replace the outgoing midfielder, but they seem to have found his replacement already. Many reports suggest that the Emirates side has sealed a move for rising Spanish star Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

The 26-year-old shares many of the qualities that the soon to be Flamengo man has and that is great news for Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard likes to have a player in the middle who can thread the needle and help maintain the tempo. This is one area where the Sociedad star is particularly skilled at.

There is a lot more to be done for Arsenal in the transfer window in order to bridge the gap between the other giants of Europe. It is good to see that they are moving quickly to take care of a key position.

Though there wasn’t much silverware added to his name during his stay in north London, Jorginho leaves having earned a good name amongst the fans. The influence of the midfielder can be seen in how highly his teammates speak of him.
