Arsenal agree transfer deal to sign Martin Odegaard

Martin Odegaard

Arsenal have reportedly agreed on a deal with Real Madrid to sign Martin Odegaard, as per reports in Sky Sports.

The Norwegian was on loan at the north London club during the second half of last season. His spell proved to be a success, as the midfielder helped transform the club’s fortunes with his vision and passing.

There have been rumours that the north Londoners were looking to bring in a creative midfielder this summer. Along with Odegaard, the other name that was suggested was that of Leicester City star James Maddison.

Sky Sports are claiming that the Gunners have agreed on a deal with Madrid and Odegaard is undergoing a medical today. The fee is around £30m plus bonuses and personal terms with the player will also be finalised soon. If the deal goes through by Friday, then the midfielder will be eligible to play against Chelsea this weekend.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the news earlier in the day:

“Martin Ødegaard has always been Arsenal priority… and now the deal is set to be completed, confirmed! Talks at final stages and here-we-go soon! Ødegaard will re-join Arsenal on permanent deal. Fee to be decided in the next hours. Contract until June 2026.”

Though Odegaard might not be the game-changing signing that Arsenal need at the moment, it is a much-needed arrival. The introduction of the midfielder last season was vital as it unlocked the team’s attack.

Now, the 22-year-old is coming to an environment that he is familiar with and players with whom he already has an understanding. This is great for a manager to have, and the price mentioned is a bargain for a player of his quality. If the playmaker can add a few more goals and assists to his name, this would be a masterstroke.

Arsenal were desperately in need of someone who can help solve the team’s creativity issues. Odegaard fits the bill in that regard as he has the qualities needed to succeed in this position. The Norway international has a lot riding on his shoulders and will be keen to prove the doubters wrong.
