Arsenal are on the verge of completing a move for Nuno Tavares of Benfica as the defender will be flying in for his medical soon.
The 21-year-old had emerged as a target for the Gunners who are on the lookout for a left-back. The thought of having the youngster as a backup for Kieran Tierney was an attractive option.
As per a report from Record, it is only a matter of hours before the move is made official. The player is on his way to London to have a medical and put the finishing touches to a deal that has progressed rapidly.
This was confirmed by another Portuguese outlet A Bola who report that Benfica have accepted an offer that is worth €10m inclusive of add-ons. Tavares is set to earn three times more at the Emirates and the deal could be completed today.
Fabrizio Romano also confirmed that it is a done deal with paperwork expected to be signed today. Here is the tweet:
Nuno Tavares to Arsenal, done deal and ‘here we go’ confirmed. Paperworks to be signed today between #AFC and Benfica board for €8m + add ons. 🔴🇵🇹
Interest started during Guendouzi talks with Benfica – Tavares was part of potential swap deal… but Mattéo wants to join OM. 🇫🇷

Though the youngster isn’t the first choice at Benfica, he has proven to be a reliable back-up when called upon. The left-back is excellent at the attacking end, has a lot of pace and is capable of whipping in some wonderful crosses.
In some ways, the 21-year-old plays a style that is similar to Tierney and that is good news for the north Londoners. The speed at which this transfer has moved ahead is quite surprising given that this isn’t usually the norm.
For the Gunners, it takes care of an important problem that had to be addressed in their squad. Now, they can focus on other positions that need reinforcements and they can be confident of doing that with the same efficiency.
The north Londoners can also be happy with the price they have negotiated with Benfica. When you consider the potential and age of the player in question, it can be considered a steal and is a move that has a lot of benefits.
Given the reports we are hearing from Portugal, it is a matter of when and not if the move will be completed. Tavares is an exciting talent and has the potential to become a great full-back going forward. Arsenal need to be appreciated for the speed with which they have pulled off this transfer.
