Iwobi ‘excited’ to work under Unai Emery next season

Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi is excited by the prospect of working under head coach Unai Emery. The Spaniard was appointed as the new Gunners boss last month after Arsene Wenger ended his 22-year reign with the north London giants.

Since then, Wales international Aaron Ramsey has talked about his excitement of playing under Emery and Iwobi has now followed a similar trend with his comments.

Speaking prior to Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly defeat to England, Iwobi admitted that he was surprised by Wenger’s decision to resign from his managerial post.

Adding to this, the Nigerian footballer said that he is excited with the opportunity to work under Emery, who steered Paris Saint-Germain to a domestic treble in the season just past.

He said: “I was surprised by his decision. [Wenger] has been there for me since I joined the club and has been very inspirational and influential on my career, but I am excited having our new manager [Emery] next season.”

Iwobi has produced a mixed showing in the Gunners’ shirt since making his debut during the 2015/16 season but he has nevertheless remained a regular member of the first-team squad.

Under Emery, the Nigerian may need to work harder owing to the Spaniard’s high-pressing style of football but his future appears secure for the upcoming season at the least.

Unlike the previous season, the focus has turned to bolstering the midfield and defensive positions ahead of next term and this suggests that the club’s attacking options could remain as it is.

The likes of Lucas Perez and Joel Campbell have been told to report to first-team duty following the break and Emery could offer a second chance to the pair, should they impress.

Campbell was previously said to be contracted until the summer of 2018 but there are reports suggesting that he has another year left on his deal.
