Willian has agreed to terminate his Arsenal contract

Willian

Arsenal winger Willian has reportedly agreed to terminate his contract with the club and sign for his boyhood club Corinthians, as per reports in ESPN Brazil.

The 33-year-old joined the Gunners for free last summer. However, the move did not go according to plan as the winger failed to showcase his true potential at the Emirates and went out of favour towards the back end of the last season.

According to the report in ESPN Brazil, the north London club and Willian have mutually reached an agreement to terminate the contract on Sunday. The Gunners waited until the last minute for any proposal from Europe which didn’t happen. The player has decided to join his boyhood club Corinthians and will sign a contract until 2023.

Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol has reported that the former Chelsea man will save the Gunners around £20 million by terminating his contract. Solhekol further claims that the Brazilian has accepted a 70% pay cut to sign for Corinthians.

Offloading Willian is a great business by Arsenal. The winger has endured a torrid time since making the move to the Emirates Stadium and parting ways will be the right outcome for both parties.

The winger has shown an appetite to play football by terminating a huge contract and taking a 70% pay cut to sign for the Brazilian side. Despite failing to excite fans with his performance on the pitch, the winger’s off-the-pitch gesture will surely impress the Emirates faithful.

Meanwhile, after a disastrous start to the new campaign, Mikel Arteta’s future is already under scrutiny. Having endured three defeats in a row without scoring a goal, the Gunners are currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table.

The Spanish boss has shown naivety in his approach in the last two games against top sides like Chelsea and Manchester City. The pressure is building on Arteta and unless the team show some improvement in the coming games, the club might wield the axe.
