“They’ve slipped”, Wesley Sneijder urges Andre Onana to skip Arsenal move

Andre Onana

Former Ajax player Wesley Sneijder told Voetbal International Live that Andre Onana should avoid joining Arsenal.

The Cameroonian had his 12-month ban reduced to nine and is eligible to play from November. The Gunners are expected to secure the services of the goalkeeper following the verdict.

Talking about this potential deal, Sneijder had some words of advice for the 25-year-old. He told Voetbal International Live:

“I expect him to leave. I think he is a great goalkeeper. One of the top in Europe? Yes, certainly.

“I’d rather not see him at Arsenal. It’s a great club, but they have slipped in recent years. I’d rather see him play at Real Madrid or Barcelona.”

The former Dutch international also touched upon Onana’s ban. He added:

“I think it’s nonsense, if you can reduce such a sentence by three months, why not by six months? Let the boy start preparing. He has already had his sentence, right? He has missed half a year, it is fine, right? If you reduce it, you are actually admitting you have made a mistake [with the original ban].”

The north Londoners are considering bringing in the shot-stopper as a replacement for Bernd Leno. If Onana were to listen to the words of the Ajax legend, it would be a big blow to the Emirates club.

Yes, they have slipped in the last few years, with consecutive eighth-place finishes not helping their cause. But they remain one of the biggest clubs in England and have won a trophy more recently than many of their rivals. So, these comments should not actually discourage the keeper.

The Cameroon international is one of the most exciting keepers plying their trade in Europe. His reflexes, passing and command over the defence make him an ideal replacement for Leno.

The 25-year-old will also get a fresh start if he joins the London club. In the coming days, we will know if the Gunners are serious about signing the Ajax player. If they do so, it would be quite a coup.
