Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal has been linked with a surprise return to the Spanish La Liga with Real Sociedad said to be interested in his services.
The Spain international was one of the Gunners’ top performers during the course of the 2017/18 campaign and ended the season just behind Aaron Ramsey for the club’s Player of the Year accolade.
Since then, Monreal has been on World Cup duty with the Spain national side but a surprise report from El Gol Digital has linked him with a switch to Sociedad this summer.
As per the report, the La Liga side are close to wrapping up the signature of Mikel Merino from Newcastle United and shortly after, they are likely to step up their interest in Monreal to shore up the left-back department.
Despite this speculation, it would come as a huge surprise, if Monreal were to leave the club, considering Sead Kolasinac has yet to make the left-back position his own.
As such, Monreal will probably stick with the Gunners for at least another season regardless of his trailing age but it will be interesting to see whether he will be rewarded with a fresh deal.
The former Malaga man is presently contracted to the Gunners until the summer of 2019 but talks over an extension are yet to progress with him currently with the national side.
Likewise Monreal, Aaron Ramsey, Danny Welbeck, Petr Cech are in similar positions with their contracts expiring in 12 months’ time, although the former is widely being tipped to pen a lengthy contract on his return to pre-season.
