Sky Sports reporter Guillem Balague has revealed that Arsenal had made contact with two defenders during the recently concluded transfer window.
The north London side had a fairly good month of January as they bolstered the attack with the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, though they could not bolster the other side of the field.
In an exclusive video on his Twitter account, Balague discussed the Gunners’ recruits during the winter transfer window, where he confirmed that there was indeed interest in signing a central defender.
The Spanish football expert revealed that the club had tried to pursue West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans prior to the transfer deadline, whilst the other defensive target was unnamed, though he may be referred to Kostas Manolas.
Arsene Wenger’s side were alleged to have made a late approach for Kostas after a failed attempt to sign Evans, but AS Roma knocked back their advances as there was not sufficient time to secure a replacement.
Meanwhile, Balague discussed the shortcomings of Mkhitaryan during his 18-month stint at Old Trafford, but believes the Gunners’ transfer business was positive nevertheless.
Arsenal have failed to keep a single clean sheet in the Premier League since the 1-0 triumph to Newcastle United in mid-December, and they face a difficult test on their hands this weekend.
Spurs have been in an impressive run which has included points against both Liverpool and Manchester United, and the Gunners will have to find their act together in the backline, if they are to attain a positive result versus their arch-rivals.
Arsenal have not clinched a victory on the road to Spurs since 2014, but they will be a sense of optimism within the squad with the match held at the Wembley Stadium, where they are unbeaten in 10 previous meetings.
