‘Ronaldo mentality’ – Former director hails Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Bologna sporting director Andre Pinto has likened the determination and mentality of Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu to that of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Arsenal signed the Japan international on deadline day for around £17m. The 22-year-old arrived in north London after having a productive couple of seasons with the Rossoblu, scoring three goals and assisting as many times in 61 Serie A appearances.

Speaking with Goal, Bologna sporting director stated that the Japanese international has a mentality and determination which is comparable to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Pinto further said that the 22-year-old is never satisfied with his performances and has a great appetite to learn and work hard to keep on improving. He said:

“What is amazing about Tomi is that he doesn’t accept anything that isn’t success. He’s not lucky, nothing for Tomi comes because he’s lucky. He’s just a hard-working player.

“You find a lot of dedicated players, but Tomi has a little bit of the Cristiano Ronaldo mentality in terms of determination, in terms of working hard and in terms of eating healthy. He is the type of player who is never satisfied. He will always continue to work hard to keep developing himself.”

Arsenal Fever View:

Tomiyasu has proved to be an excellent signing for Arsenal. The north London club were short at right-back last season, so the Japanese international’s arrival has resolved that issue for Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners boss was looking to sign a versatile defender who could also be deployed as a centre-back and the 22-year-old aptly fits that criteria as he can play anywhere across the defence.

Tomiyasu, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhães and Kieran Tierney could form an excellent backline for the north London club. So, it could be an exciting time ahead for the Emirates faithful.

After a disappointing start to the season, Arsenal have turned the tide around by winning the last four games in all competitions. Most importantly they achieved a crucial victory against arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The Gunners will be hoping to keep their winning run going when they meet Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
