Pundit questions Mikel Arteta’s decision on Arsenal star David Raya

David Raya

Former Arsenal star Adrian Clarke believes Mikel Arteta should bring back Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks after David Raya’s underwhelming start to life in the English capital.

The England international started every game in the Premier League for the Gunners last season and also featured in the EPL team of the year. However, he has been unable to retain his spot as the no.1 stopper since the arrival of Raya from Brentford on loan.

The Spaniard started in seven of the Gunners last eight games, with Ramsdale’s only appearance coming in a 1-0 win over Brentford in the EFL Cup. Recently, he has been committing a few mistakes, and there is increasing support to bring Ramsdale back into the starting lineup.

Adrian Clarke, who has been talking about Raya’s performance for the north London club on the Handbrake Off Podcast, said that he is making two errors per game on average and that Arteta should be considering switching goalkeepers at this stage.

“At the moment, it’s two mistakes a game. Was Ramsdale making two mistakes a game? Probably not truth be told, so he’s under pressure for his place.”

“It must be in Arteta’s thoughts for how long does he leave it. I’ll be honest, I don’t care who’s in goal, I just want them both to be brilliant.”

Arsenal Fever View:

Although the Englishman did make some errors in key games, he had earned the trust of the manager, the players, and the fanbase. Therefore, a sudden switch to Raya has raised eyebrows.

Unlike other players on the pitch, a simple mistake by the goalkeeper can cost the team the entire game. Luckily for the former Brentford man, the oppositions have not capitalised on his errors.

It is difficult to see why Mikel Arteta continues to start Raya when Ramsdale has not set a foot wrong. With the Euros fast approaching, he’ll need more game time to ensure he makes the Three Lions squad. If he is unable to do so, then a move away from Arsenal in the January transfer window is imminent.

Undoubtedly, the Gunners have two world-class goalkeepers in their ranks, but it is vital that Arteta uses them efficiently.
