Pundit casts doubt over Jorginho transfer after Arsenal defeat

Jorginho

Arsenal’s latest signing Jorginho made his debut for the club on Saturday as they suffered an improbable defeat to relegation-threatened Everton.

The Gunners have been in excellent form in the Premier League and were unbeaten in their last 13 games, drawing just two games in the process. The defeat at Goodison Park is just their second of the season.

Right from the get-go, the Toffees were piling pressure on the Arsenal defense. They created a couple of clear-cut chances in the first half, but it was the set pieces that were really troubling the north Londoners. Inevitably, James Tarkowski broke the deadlock with a strong header courtesy of a well-taken corner by Dwight McNeil.

Mikel Arteta chose to start Jorginho on the bench, but he was eventually introduced just before the hour mark. He had little impact on the proceedings, and Micky Gray has questioned whether he will fit into Arsenal’s dynamic play. While speaking on TalkSport, the pundit said:

“A comparison I can give you, Sam, is Thiago for Liverpool. He’s very similar in the way that he is fantastic on the ball, he can see a pass. He plays the game at his own pace.”

“But when you haven’t got the ball, has he got enough in the legs and the tank to help out the way Arsenal plays? He brings a different dimension, he has his own skills and his own qualities. But he’s not Thomas Partey.”

Arsenal Fever View:

The former Chelsea man hardly got off to an ideal start. He was brought on to give the north Londoners some control in the midfield, but he was outplayed by the likes of Amadou Onana, Idrissa Gueye, and Abdoulaye Doucore.

It wouldn’t be fair to blame the Gunners’ second defeat of the season on the debutant. With a home fixture against Brentford on the horizon, he will be hoping to showcase his ball retention and playmaking ability in front of the Arsenal faithful.

Arsenal still remain five points clear at the summit of the League table, ahead of Manchester City having played the same number of games. Arteta will be keen for his side to get back to winning ways when they take on the Bees next weekend.
