Petr Cech has set Arsenal an ambitious points target to challenge Chelsea for the Premier League title, as per Arsenal’s official website.
The 34-year-old believes all the Gunners need to do this season to win the league is to take at least 50 more points from their remaining 20 games. He insists the Emirates club still have time to recover from their pre-Christmas blip and win the league this term.
The North London club recovered from their back to back defeats against Everton and Manchester City with a 1-0 win against West Brom.
They are now on 37 points from a possible 54 from their 18 games so far, leaving them in fourth 9 points behind leaders Chelsea.
The four-time League winner insists there is little margin for error and has calculated how many points the team needs to win their first Premier League title since 2004 and for him to add a fifth title to his cabinet. Speaking to Arsenal’s Official website, He says:
Overall you need to be consistent to get to 87 or 88 points and it doesn’t really matter how you get to that. If you have back-to-back losses then you have to go and make up for it in different games. Then you can catch up.
It’s a long-term competition so if you have a period where you’ve not been particularly great, you can still make up for it.
There are still enough games to make up for our blip and I also think it’s impossible for our opponents to not drop points.
There’s still a big opportunity for us to close the gap now. Between now and the end of January, the table might look completely different.
However having lost three matches already reaching Cech’s target is quite a tall order with the team needing an equivalent of 16 wins and two draws to reach his tally.
That would mean dropping just 10 points from now till the end of the season which is quite a mammoth task really. To put it in context, it means reaching their highest ever points tally since their Invincibles campaign 12 years ago.
