Medical imminent, Agent confirms Arsenal midfielder is closing in on a transfer move

Lucas Torreira

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is set to undergo a medical ahead of joining Atletico Madrid, his agent has confirmed to Inside Futbol.

The Uruguayan arrived in the summer of 2018 and instantly became an important part of the North London club. He made 39 appearances and scored two goals last season, but is yet to get some game time in the new campaign.

The 24-year-old had been linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer with Torino said to be interested. Italian side Roma were also keen on him, but it seems Atletico have won the race.

Speaking to Inside Futbol, Pablo Betancur, the agent of Lucas Torreira has confirmed that the midfielder is edging closer to Atletico move. He is quoted as saying:

“Yes, Roma is out. Now Atletico. Yes, tomorrow medical visits.”

There is still no clarity on whether this will be a permanent transfer, but going by recent reports it will be a season-long loan with an option to buy(no obligation).

With the departure of Torriera, the Emirates club will free up some space in regards to the wage bill and can bring in fresh talent. The club has been linked with both Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey and it remains to be seen if the club can finalize a deal over the next few days.

The Uruguayan was a constant presence in the team under Unai Emery but that has not always been the case with Mikel Arteta. Even under the former boss, there were times when he played out of position.

He is at his best when breaking up play and protecting the defense and with the emergence of a player like Dani Ceballos, the midfielder has found opportunities to be limited.

When Torriera arrived in London, there was an optimism around the Emirates that the midfielder will fix Arsenal’s issues at the center of the pitch, but eventually that didn’t work out as planned.

The midfielder had some great moments at Arsenal such as his goal in the North London derby and fans will be wishing him well as he makes his way to Spain. The Emirates club have their task cut out over the next few days as they look to bring-in some reinforcements before the transfer deadline.
