BBC pundit Chris Sutton has tipped Kieran Tierney to become Arsenal’s next captain given the defender’s level of commitment.
Mikel Arteta is on the lookout for a new skipper after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of the captaincy earlier this month following a disciplinary breach. Since then, the forward has not been involved in any games, which casts serious doubts over his future at north London.
Arsenal ruthlessly dismantled a hapless Norwich side on Sunday evening and put five goals past them. Tierney was dominant on the left flank and scored the second goal. The left-back struck the ball smoothly into the bottom corner to double the visitor’s advantage just before half-time.
With Mikel Arteta yet to appoint the next permanent captain, Sutton claims that Tierney would be a good replacement. He admires the Scotland international’s commitment to the game. While speaking on Radio 5 Live, the former Celtic striker said:
“I’ve always followed him closely because of his time up at Celtic, getting into the team at a young age. The thing I like about Tierney, I don’t think he’s the finished article yet, but he is so, so committed in every game”
“That’s why a lot of Arsenal fans would give him the captaincy. Robbie (Savage) said the same this evening, and you agree with him, Daniel. That is because of that. It is fair to say that Arsenal have lacked leaders over the years and that’s one of the issues Mikel Arteta has had to deal with.”
Arsenal Fever View:
Tierney had cemented his place on the left flank for Arsenal last season after some impressive performances. But, injuries have been a major setback for the 24-year-old. After recovering from a knock that he picked up in late October, the defender found himself on the sidelines for few games as Arteta opted to deploy Nuno Tavares at left-back.
However, Tierney has returned to form in recent weeks. He has been a fan-favorite since arriving at the Emirates courtesy of his passion and commitment. He is a clear leader on the pitch, showcasing his captaincy credentials on numerous occasions. And, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tierney lead the team down the tunnel eventually.
The Gunners’ victory against Norwich strengthens their position in the top-four. They will be determined to continue their excellent form when they face League leaders, Manchester City, on New year’s day.
