Former Tottenham boss Jamie Redknapp believes Arsenal can match Bayern Munich when the two teams meet in the Champions League, as per Daily Mail.
The North London club finished at the pinnacle of their Champions League group after a gap of five years, with PSG coming in second.
However, the Gunners were still drawn with Bayern Munich in the round-of-16 which took place on Monday evening.
This is the fourth time in five years, the Emirates club have been handed a tie against the German champions and Wenger’s side have often found themselves on the loosing side.
Redknapp, feels the Gunners have an advantage of playing the second leg at home and claims Arsenal have a good chance of beating the Bavarian’s if they can keep all their best players fit. Speaking to Sportsmail, he said:
People will say that Arsenal can’t catch a break in the Champions League but Bayern Munich are not the same force they have been in previous years.
The Germans still have a formidable team but Arsenal need to forget the names on the team sheet and look at their performances. While they were eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga this time last year, Bayern are now top only on goal difference.
In recent years Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery have been the danger men and while they are still fabulous players, they are not getting any younger. Bayern may be favourites but playing the second leg at the Emirates could give Arsenal a big advantage.
If Arsenal have all their big players fit then they have a great chance.
There have been signs this season that the power balance between the two teams may be shifting. When the tie does take place in the middle of February, the Gunners might finally be able to get the better of the Bavarian giants.
This is a new Bayern side, which could be more vulnerable than it has been for many years. The North London club, look a far better side than the one that was thrashed 5-1 in Munich a year ago.
Wenger’s side have a growing mental strength and momentum in their favour. If they can keep their key players fit until they face Bayern, they must feel they have a strong chance of overturning the German champions.
It is time for the tide to shift and time for Arsenal to reach the Champions League quarter-finals. Bayern will be a huge test, but it’s one this team is capable of passing.
