It was one of the more surprising moves that happened over the summer. After looking like he was getting back to his old self, Jack Wilshere ended up making a rather shock move to Premier League club West Ham United.
There have been a few suggestions as to why this move took place. Now, the player himself has decided to clear the air regarding this issue.
According to Express, this is what Wilshere had to say about the move away from the Gunners:
“If Arsene had stayed I would have stayed, because of the influence he had in my career and the trust he had in me. He gave me the armband and respected me a lot.
So, I had pretty much agreed to stay. And then he left and that changed things.”
It is clear to see the kind of relationship that the Englishman had with the former Arsenal manager. Despite going through numerous injury problems, Wenger always made it a point to support Wilshere and that has allowed the player to give fans some moments of brilliance.
Although to be fair, there is another way to look at this story. When Unai Emery was announced as the new Arsenal manager, it seemed like the midfielder was going to stay.
Then, there were a couple of signings made in the midfield and that was sure to change the dynamics of the team. The additions of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi meant that the chances for Wilshere were going to reduce.
It can be safely said that this too played a major part in the decision that the Englishman ended up making. His path to the first team was already blocked and the transfers just made it worse.
If Wilshere had opted to stay with the Gunners, it would have given the Emirates club a big boost as he is someone who is capable of producing special moments. But all that is in the past now and Arsenal must focus on extending their winning streak for as long as possible.
