Fabrizio Romano speaks out on future of Arsenal star Reiss Nelson

Reiss Nelson

According to Fabrizio Romano, Reiss Nelson could leave Arsenal this summer as talks over a contract extension are yet to reach an advanced stage.

The 23-year-old graduated from the Hale End academy and made his first senior appearance for the club in 2017. His most impressive campaign was in 2019 when he made 22 appearances, playing a crucial role in the Gunners’ FA Cup triumph.

Nelson has only made seven appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side this campaign after being sidelined due to an injury he sustained in December. With his current contract set to expire in the summer, there is a possibility that he may leave the Premier League leaders for free.

Romano has claimed on Twitter that the Hale End graduate’s future still hasn’t been decided. The club are yet to make concrete negotiations over a new deal.

The winger is happy to stay in the English capital, but with interest from other clubs, a summer departure could be on the cards. Here is what the Italian journalist had to say about Nelson’s contractual situation:

Arsenal Fever View:

Nelson, who came through Arsenal’s academy as one of the most exciting wingers has failed to live up to the expectations. He has been around the club for six years now but has failed to cement his spot.

The 23-year-old’s fellow academy graduate, Bukayo Saka, has transformed into one of the best wingers in the league, and Gabriel Martinelli has progressed significantly this campaign. With the recent addition of Leandro Trossard to the squad, Nelson’s pathway seems congested.

Injuries have been a hurdle to the Englishman’s progress. Despite his lack of minutes this season, he is undoubtedly a talented player. And letting him leave on a free transfer would be a significant lapse in judgment from the club.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have dropped points in back-to-back Premier League games for the first time this season. However, they still have a healthy six-point lead at the summit of the League table. The North Londoners have the opportunity to extend the lead to nine points when they face Manchester City on Wednesday in a herculean title clash.
