After reports emerged that Arsenal were preparing an offer for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ben White, journalist Charles Watts gave his take on this potential transfer.
The centre-back’s outstanding season was capped with a call-up to England team for the Euro’s. Though the 23-year-old primarily plays in defence, he can also be used in midfield.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Watts said that the Englishman would be a good signing. He also added that he didn’t feel the Gunners would spend all their money on the Brighton player. Watts said:
“I think he’d be a really exciting signing; I have to say; I think he’s excellent. I know there’s a lot of talk Arsenal don’t need a centre back, they should be spending their money elsewhere.
“I do think they’re going to spend money elsewhere; I don’t think it’s a case of Arsenal going to waste all of their money on Ben White and have nothing left for anywhere else.”
The journalist also touched upon where the north Londoners would be spending their money, as he added:
“I don’t think they’d do that, I’d be stunned if they do that, because it’s clear they need to improve the squad in other areas. But I do think centre-back is an option that they also have to strengthen.”

The Gunners do not really need another defender, but a player of White’s quality would certainly be welcome at the Emirates. And at the age of 23, he has the potential to become a world-class talent for years to come.
One factor that could prevent the deal from happening is the fee which is set at around £50m. This feels quite high but is reflective of the talent and potential of the player.
This summer is a chance for the north Londoners to improve their squad and catch up with their rivals. While bolstering their defence would be good, it is not an area that needs major reinforcements.
Arsenal’s pursuit of White could end up being successful and if so, they would get a hugely talented centre-back. But the hope is that they will spend this money on a different area of the pitch.
