BBC Sport pundit Steven Thompson has praised Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney after his impressive display on international duty.
The 24-year-old started for Scotland in a crucial World Cup qualifier clash against Moldova on Friday night and put in a productive display, helping Steve Clarke’s side secure a playoff spot with a 2-0 victory.
Nathan Patterson scored the opener for Scotland before Che Adams doubled the margin midway through the second half. Kieran Tierney made a stellar contribution eight minutes from full-time when Vadim Rata’s spot-kick was saved by Scottish keeper Craig Gordon and the Arsenal star made a brilliant challenge on the rebound to deny Moldova from scoring.
Speaking to BBC Sportsound after the game, Steven Thompson has praised Kieran Tierney for his goal-saving challenge:
“What a save! He’s got a really strong arm to it. Kieran Tierney’s desire to clear the rebound is absolutely brilliant, top-class defending.”
Arsenal Fever View:
Kieran Tierney has established himself as an integral part of the north Londoners’ system since making the move from Celtic back in 2019. The defender blended in immediately and became a fan favourite with his hard-working mentality and humble personality.
Mikel Arteta has praised the full back’s leadership abilities previously and even went onto claim that the former Celtic man could become club captain in future.
Despite producing some promising displays, the 24-year-old has struggled with injuries since arriving at the north London club. The defender had to be sidelined for a few games this season due to injury issues and this could be a point of concern for the Emirates faithful.
Meanwhile, following the international break, a tough fixture awaits Arsenal in the form of Liverpool. The previous trips to the red half of Merseyside haven’t been great for the Gunners but they will take some heart from their recent run of results.
