Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson keen on extending his contract

Reiss Nelson

Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson has admitted that he would be delighted to sign a contract extension with the north London club.

The Gunners returned to the top of the Premier League with a convincing 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest courtesy of a heroic performance from Nelson. He came off the bench to replace injured Bukayo Saka after 27 minutes.

The 22-year-old scored twice in four minutes early into the second half before teeing up Thomas Partey for a spectacular fourth goal. It was his first Premier League appearance since last season’s opening-day loss to Brentford.

The youngster, who rose through the ranks of the Hale End academy, spent last season on loan at Feyenoord. During his time in the Netherlands, the attacker was involved in 11 goals in 32 appearances.

Nelson’s current deal is due to expire next summer, but he is keen on extending the contract. He stated that it was always his plan to return to his boyhood club and prove his capabilities. According to The Athletic, he said:

“I’ve never doubted myself at this football club. Arsenal is a team that I’ve been at since I was eight years old and I have a very, very strong bond and love for the club.”

“Of course, there have been times where I’ve been a bit down when I haven’t played or been on the bench, but my plan has never been for me to leave the club or say that I have no future here and I will do everything possible to get there.”

“I only have some months left on my contract. Getting a new deal would be amazing and I would love to commit to the club. Any opportunity I get I’m going to try and take and just do my very best and just keep helping the team really.”

Arsenal Fever View:

During Nelson’s time at Hale End, everyone at the club was convinced the youngster was destined for the top. He was just gliding past the defenders at the youth level. However, after receiving plenty of chances at the senior level, he has not been able to replicate the successes enjoyed earlier in his career.

Undoubtedly, the winger is blessed with plenty of talent, and it looks like he has matured during his time at Feyenoord. If his performance against Nottingham Forest is a sign of things to come, then Arsenal have got an excellent winger in their ranks.

The north Londoners will play their final Europa League group stage game when they host FC Zurich on Thursday night. That is potentially another opportunity for the youngster to showcase his talents and become a regular in the first-team squad.
