Arsenal travel to Newcastle United on Monday after suffering a setback in their hopes of finishing in the top four, so let’s look at the predicted lineup.
The Gunners suffered a demoralising defeat at the hands of Tottenham and their lead is now down to one point. With their north London rivals looking better and better, the pressure is on the visitors.
Aaron Ramsdale did not do too much wrong despite letting in three goals during the week but will want to ensure he gets a clean sheet. There might be shuffling needed in the backline and that could see the return of Nuno Tavares on the left flank with Cedric back on the right.
There’s a further worry for Arteta with regards to the centre-backs with the suspension of Rob Holding. If Ben White is fit, he is likely to start along with Takehiro Tomiyasu who has played in this position before.
Central midfield is one area where the north Londoners do not have any selection worries. Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka have been trusted in these positions and will continue to be chosen. These two need to ensure that the attack has a platform from which they can build.
Further ahead, there could be a change with Gabriel Martinelli making way for Emile Smith Rowe. The Englishman will be along with Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard. These three have done so much to put the Gunners in this position. A little push from them would go a long way in helping the club finish in the top four.
Eddie Nketiah did not have much luck against Spurs as he couldn’t affect the match. But that should change against the Magpies as the forward’s movement and finishing will be needed to finish off attacks.
Arsenal must ensure that they do not crumble under the pressure and should focus only on what they can do. Their destiny is still in their control and a win over Newcastle would go a long way in helping them get back to the Champions League.
