Arsenal continue their elusive quest for a Premier League title as they travel up north to take on Aston Villa in what promises to be a tough game, so let’s take a look at the predicted lineup.
The Gunners had a comfortable start to the season as they won 2-0 against Wolves. Despite the ease with which they played, there were stretches of the game that would have concerned the manager and that cannot be repeated against Villa.
David Raya pulled off a couple of important saves last week and would be expected to be more active given the attacking threat of the hosts. In defence, there could be a first start for new signing Riccardo Calafiori. The Italian would be on the left flank with Ben White on the right.
William Saliba and Gabriel start as the central defensive pairing and need to be on their toes to prevent the likes of Ollie Watkins from scoring. The added solidity that Calafiori will provide should give the defence more of a boost.
In midfield, though the north Londoners are close to signing Mikel Merino, it is likely to be the same one that played against Wolves. Thomas Partey will sit at the base of the midfield three along with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.
Further forward we can expect to see Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli line up on the wings. These two are going to be crucial in getting the better of the Villa defence, with their skill and speed. If they can get beyond the backline, it greatly improves the chances of the visitors winning.
Kai Havertz will resume as the central striker given how well he has adapted to that role superbly. The German and his aerial ability will be a weapon that Arteta would want to make good use of. If that can happen, it will open up a number of opportunities to score from.
The two defeats that Arsenal suffered against Villa could be pointed as to the reason they lost the league to Manchester City. Unai Emery has shown that he can get the better of Arteta. For that to change, the Gunners need to ensure that they are clinical in front of goal.
Arsenal Predicted Lineup Against Aston Villa (4-3-3):
David Raya, Ben White, William Saliba, Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori, Thomas Partey, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz
