Arsenal have reportedly begun negotiations over a fresh deal with midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The England international has just a year left on his previous Gunners deal.
According to The Sun, the Gunners’ hierarchy have started discussions about a fresh contract for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who enjoyed his best return at the north London club last term.
The Ox managed to contribute six goals and 11 assists over the course of last season, but it was his work rate in the second half of the season, which impressed the Gunners boss.
Both Liverpool and Chelsea are looking to take advantage of the player’s uncertainty at the Emirates, but Wenger is still keen to agree fresh terms with The Ox, who is currently in the prime of his career.
Talks are still in the preliminary stage with regards to the extension, which could see the 23-year-old earn a £30,000 increase on his current £70,000 a week wages.
Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed his best spell in the Gunners shirt at right wing-back last season, but the Englishman sees his future in the central midfield department as he seeks to reach the heights of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
The versatile ace managed just 16 Premier League starts during the 2016/17 campaign, and he would assurances of an extended run in the first-team before extending his contract.
