Arsenal open talks with Mohamed Elneny over contract extension

Elneny

Arsenal have reportedly begun talks with Mohamed Elneny over a new contract following the Egyptian’s impressive performances in recent games.

Elneny has amassed over 150 appearances for the club since signing from Basel back in 2016. With his current contract set to expire this summer, his time in the English capital looked to be coming to an end.

The midfielder has started Arsenal’s last four league games. His solid display in the middle of the pitch helped them clinch victories in those fixtures. This seems to be enough for the club’s hierarchy to rethink his future at the club.

According to The Athletic, the club have opened talks with the 29-year-old over a contract extension and they’re hopeful an agreement can be reached. The talks are still at an early stage, but they are keen on keeping hold of him longer.

The Egypt international is a senior member of Mikel Arteta’s team. His experience and leadership traits are considered critical attributes, especially for a young squad like Arsenal.

Several reports have suggested that Newcastle United were keen on signing Elneny in the summer. Other European clubs were also monitoring his contractual situation, but as things stand, he is set to extend his contract with the north Londoners.

Arsenal Fever View:

The 29-year-old was integrated back into the side following an injury to Thomas Partey. The Gunners’ hope of a return to the Champions League was crumbling as they struggled to find their feet, but Elneny’s return has helped them steady the ship.

The Egyptian has formed a solid partnership alongside Granit Xhaka in the middle of the park. He certainly has stepped up his game and was rewarded with successive starts. Prior to the last four games, he had only started one Premier League game this season.

Although the attacking aspect of his game needs significant improvement, he has done an incredible job in filling the void left out by Partey. Even if Elneny signs a new contract, reinforcing their midfield department in the summer transfer window should still be a priority for the Gunners. He is likely to remain a fringe player, with the Ghanian set to return for the new campaign.
