Arsenal are in the market for a striker and how many times have we heard this one before? The idea that Arsenal could reach another level with a top class striker in their midst; or as many would like to put it, a striker who is a notch above Olivier Giroud and/or offers something different to Arsenal’s gameplay, is the missing piece in Arsene Wenger’s puzzle is one on which there seems to be quite a consensus.
The availability of such a striker, however, seems to have been the question at hand, with most experts and fans agreeing that most such strikers are already at some of the biggest clubs in the world, contracted and unavailable at any price to Arsenal.
However last season and possibly the one before it has been proven that there are quality strikers within the Premier League itself, strikers who could in likelihood help the Arsenal cause.
These are not your Agueros, Higuains and Zlatans, but they are at the moment in mid-table teams and are yet, representing their country and starring in them.
Recent reports in the Express claim that Arsenal have opened talks with Everton over the possible transfer of Romelu Lukaku, one such striker who has in recent transfer windows interested almost everybody across Europe.
With the bizarre, yet what had seemed to be a likely transfer for Jamie Vardy all but over, Arsenal have now turned their attention to Lukaku, The Express understands.
Arsene Wenger had agreed to trigger Vardy’s 20 million release clause, but it now seems that the England striker is set to remain at Leicester City.
Having opened talks with Everton for Lukaku, Arsenal will be looking to do quick business for the Belgian. Everton, who enter a new era in their existence as a club, do not need the money for Lukaku anymore, who according to his agent, might even stay back with the arrival of new boss Ronald Koeman and major shareholder Farhad Moshiri.
Lukaku has previously been quoted voicing his interest in playing for a ‘big’ club to ‘win titles’ with Manchester United and his former club Chelsea said to have been interested.
Romelu Lukaku has scored 61 goals in 127 appearances in all competitions for Everton ever since his arrival at Goodison Park 3 seasons ago.
If he were to sign, there is little doubt that Lukaku would offer Arsenal something entirely different up front. Tall, combative, physically strong and an intelligent finisher, Lukaku could be the missing piece in Wenger’s puzzle.
