According to a report from German publication BILD(via Express), Arsenal are interested in signing Denis Zakaria from Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Swiss midfielder who joined the Bundesliga club in the summer of 2017, has developed into one of the best in his position. And at the international level, he regularly plays in the middle with the Gunners’ very own Granit Xhaka.
BILD are reporting that the north Londoners are keen on signing the player as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season. The 24-year-old and his representatives are unwilling to sign a new deal with Gladbach as they want a move elsewhere.
It further claims that the Gunners could face competition from Italy with interest from both Roma and Inter Milan. But the player himself would prefer a move to the Premier League as per reporter Christian Falk who confirmed Arsenal’s interest and is quoted as saying:
“That is a clear true. There has been interest in the past. Zakaria is on the books of almost every top club in Italy, but he wants the Premier League. Arsenal could be a club that can’t afford them anymore but are interested.”
Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing Zakaria to Rome and if possible, in January. But it is understood that Gunners technical director Edu is keen on beating the competition and wants to bring him to the Emirates.
Arsenal Fever View:
At a young age, Zakaria has proven that he can lead a midfield on his own and has become the fulcrum of the German side. Strong both physically and technically, the central midfielder can weave his way out of trouble with a dribble or a pass. He is also good at handling his defensive duties.
If the north Londoners were to bring him in, it would perfectly complement the style that Mikel Arteta wants to play. The Gladbach man would be a good fit alongside either Xhaka or Thomas Partey. The 24-year-old’s tactical flexibility would allow the manager to try different systems.
Arsenal will not have it easy as they look to add another midfield option to the team. Zakaria would be an excellent acquisition and his skills are ideally suited to the hustle and bustle of the Premier League. But it remains to be seen if the Gunners can see off the competition for him.
