Arsenal hold initial talks with Bukayo Saka over new contract

Bukayo Saka

Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with representatives of Bukayo Saka over a new contract at the Emirates, according to The Athletic.

The 20-year-old joined the Gunners at the age of seven and made his professional debut in 2018. He has already amassed 121 appearances for the club across all competitions.

The Englishman is the Gunners’ joint-top scorer this season with 10 goals while also providing five assists. The youngster also has 14 appearances for the England national team under his belt.

Saka was yet again the match-winner for Mikel Arteta’s side on Saturday. His sublime finish from the edge of the box earned his team all three points against Aston Villa.

The youngster’s meteoric rise in recent years has caught the attention of some English clubs. Reports have emerged claiming that Manchester United and Liverpool are closely monitoring his contractual situation at Arsenal.

According to The Athletic, the north Londoners are keen on securing the youngster’s future. They are prepared to offer an improved contract to reflect his rising prominence at the club.

The report further states that the Gunners have held an initial conversation with the player’s representatives over a new deal. The club are confident Saka will put pen-to-paper over the proposed deal.

Arsenal Fever View:

The England international has become one of the first names on the team sheet under Arteta. He wields significant influence on the team and has single-handedly won a number of games for the Gunners.

Saka did sign a new four-year contract in 2020. He currently earns around £30k-per-week, like his fellow academy graduate Emile Smith Rowe. Although his contract does not expire for another two years, the Emirates club are prepared to reward him with a new contract befitting his status at the club.

The Hale End graduate has been working wonders from the right flank. Retaining him for the future would be a massive statement of intent from the club. The 20-year-old is a Gunner through and through. He shares a special bond with the players and fans alike. So, it is only a matter of time before he signs a new contract at the club.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are inching closer towards a return to Champions League football. They go into the international break occupying the top-four spot with a game in hand.
