Arsenal favourites to sign Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico

Unai Emery

Unai Emery is reportedly looking at Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico for a transfer to the Emirates this summer.

Emery worked with the first team keeper in his time at Sevilla, in which he won three Euro League titles and is reportedly a huge fan of the player.

Spanish Outlet Fichajes is reporting that Arsenal are favourites to complete the signing of Rico, after Emery expressed interest in the former player. The Spaniard is just 24 and is very young in comparison to the Gunners current goalkeeping outfit of Petr Cech at 36 years old and David Ospina at 29 years old.

After a very mixed season for Petr Cech, many fans of the North London side believe it might be time to bring in a fresh set of gloves to take over from the Premier League legend.

Conceding 51 goals in the Premier League this season, more than any other team in the top 6, many believe it is a defensive overhaul that is needed more than anything for the Gunners this summer.

The fingers have been pointed at Petr Cech several times this season and with the keeper already past his prime a change is required sooner or later.

It is believed that a new goalkeeper will be part of a complete rebuilding of the defence at Arsenal, with center back Caglar Soyuncu confirming that Arsenal want to sign him and the transfer negotiations will be taking place soon.

More recently Stephen Lichtsteiner has been linked with a move to the Emirates this summer with a free transfer being lined up. The 34-year-old is a veteran of the game and is currently at Italian giants Juventus and many fans believe his signing would be bringing a wealth of experience for an otherwise young defence.

It is hard to see Petr Cech remaining the Gunner’s number 1 in seasons to come and a keeper like Sergio Rico would be a great addition to a team undergoing massive change.
