Arsenal are reported to be on the verge of completing the signing of Mikel Merino as per noted journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The midfielder has slowly been on the rise and his stock is at an all-time high following Spain’s win at the recently concluded Euros. The 28-year-old has experience of playing in England given his past stint up north with Newcastle United.
As for the reported deal between Real Sociedad and the Gunners, this is what Romano had to say:
“Mikel Merino to Arsenal, here we go! Verbal agreement in place for Spanish midfielder to join Gunners. €32m plus €5m add-ons with favorable payment terms. Contract until 2028. Arsenal were closing in on Merino deal since end of July, Merino only wanted Arsenal.
He further added:
“Similar to the Riccardo Calafiori story, Mikel Arteta has been crucial also for Merino’s move to Arsenal. Positive talks with the player, Merino had at least two more proposals but he’s been clear. He’s set to travel for medical, signing until 2028 + option”
Arsenal Fever View:
This is fantastic news for the north Londoners who could do with some new blood joining the ranks. Though midfield is an area where there is a lot of talent, it can be said that Mikel Arteta hasn’t found a proper replacement for Granit Xhaka.
That is where Merino comes in as he has the skills and temperament needed to succeed and if possible, improve upon the Swiss international. Though it would have been better having the Spaniard in London in time for the opening league game.
The fact that the Gunners have the patience to wait and strike a deal that suits them shows that they have matured in the transfer market. They are no longer the team that can be bullied into doing what the other party wants.
A potential midfield trio of Merino along with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard is a mouth-watering prospect. These three will bring so much variety to what Arteta can do with his selection. Fans will be hoping that the deal gets concluded swiftly and if possible, the midfielder can play against Aston Villa this weekend.
