Arsenal defender William Saliba set to sign a new contract

William Saliba

According to journalist Freddie Paxton, William Saliba has reportedly agreed on terms over a new contract with Arsenal.

The young defender joined the Gunners back in 2019 from St. Etienne but is yet to make his Premier League debut for the club. He spent the last three years out on loan in Ligue 1.

Saliba had a productive loan spell last campaign with Olympique Marseille, where he helped the French side secure a second-place finish. He started 35 league games and was also voted Ligue 1 young player of the year at the end of the season.

Since his return to Arsenal, the 21-year-old has been given opportunities in pre-season. He was impressive during the games against Everton and Orlando City. With just a couple of years left on his current contract, the Gunners are determined to hold onto him for much longer.

Freddie Paxton has reported that following positive talks between both camps, the player has agreed to sign a new contract with the club. Arsenal are impressed with his development over the recent years and consider him to be an integral part of the squad for the upcoming season.

Arsenal Fever View:

Saliba had a stellar season in France, where he was ever-present in Jorge Sampoli’s team. His excellent performances did not go unnoticed as he was awarded his maiden call-up to the France national team.

During the pre-season games, he formed a solid partnership with Gabriel at the back. He showed incredible composure and intelligence when under pressure from attackers. These performances are evidence of his development in recent seasons.

Although it seems like a long time since the north Londoners signed the Frenchman, he is still young with plenty of time to hone his skills. This makes him an exciting prospect, and the club have made the right decision to tie his future down before the start of next season.

Arsenal have had a faultless pre-season so far, winning all of their games. They will next face Chelsea and Sevilla, with just over two weeks left for the start of the Premier League it will be interesting to see how Saliba is utilized in those games.
