Arsenal could revive their interest in Philippe Coutinho, claims Journalist

Coutinho Arsenal

Speaking on The Football Terrace’s The Done Deal Show, journalist Pete O’Rourke said that Arsenal could revive their interest in Philippe Coutinho.

The north London club were earlier linked with a move for the Brazilian midfielder last season, but it did not materialise. The playmaker spent the last season with the Catalan giants scoring three goals in 14 games.

With Martin Odegaard likely to stay at Real Madrid, O’Rourke believes that the north Londoners could return for Coutinho. He said:

“I think one name that will probably crop up again between now and the close of the transfer window is Philippe Coutinho. He’s obviously surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou. He’s not really in the plans of the club or Ronald Koeman.”

The journalist also spoke about the Brazilian’s quality and his agent’s close links with the Emirates club. He added:

“On his day, he’s a quality player as he showed when he was at Liverpool. I think he was one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League during his time at Anfield as well. His agent has got very close links with Arsenal hierarchy. I think this deal could suit everybody.”

And according to a report from the Mundo Deportivo, the north Londoners are waiting for an update from Barcelona on the player’s fitness, before weighing up a move. The midfielder had a second surgery done on his meniscus and is currently recovering.

It looks unlikely that the Gunners will pursue this signing unless they fail to bring in other targets. They have been linked with similar players such as James Maddison which would be a more desirable option.

The main factor that might prevent this deal from happening is the player’s age. With the playmaker turning 30 next year, it will be interesting to see how much Barcelona would want for him.

One type of move that would work is a loan, similar to how the Gunners brought in Odegaard. There are no doubts about the Brazilian’s ability, having already excelled in England. We will get to know more of what the north Londoners want to do as the window goes on. If Arsenal do sign Coutinho, it has exciting possibilities.
