As per a report from The Sun, Arsenal are considering a shock move for former midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who plays for Liverpool now.
The Englishman joined the Gunners in the summer of 2011 and went on to spend six years at the Emirates. Soon after the 2017/18 season began, the midfielder made the move to Merseyside with the Reds paying a huge fee.
The report states that the north Londoners are looking at bringing in Oxlade-Chamberlain on a loan deal in January. With Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny set to leave for the African Cup of Nations, and injury problems in general, he is seen as someone who can provide cover.
And according to The Sun, there could be a way to make this temporary deal permanent. Manager Mikel Arteta who captained the England international at the Emirates feels that the 28-year-old would add some quality and flexibility to the midfield.
Another reason for the move being considered is that Oxlade-Chamberlain has only two years left on his contract. This is seen as Liverpool’s chance of getting a good fee for their player.
Arsenal Fever View:
While injuries have certainly blunted the impact that a player like Oxlade-Chamberlain can have, he still has a lot of quality. And as someone who is familiar to the Gunners’ boss, it makes sense why Arteta would want him. He currently earns £120,000-a-week, which the Emirates club should be comfortable with.
The major worry in bringing him in would be the midfielder’s injury record, as the primary reason for this move is to give the midfield some cover. But as someone who has a point to prove, there should be enough incentive for the former Arsenal man to do well.
He has qualities that suit the style of play the manager wants to see. And he could prove to be a useful option to have because of the flexibility. If the former Southampton man can do well, it could lead to a permanent move.
Arsenal would definitely benefit from adding some talent to their midfield given the fitness of some of the existing options. In Oxlade-Chamberlain, they might be able to find a solution that is cheap, useful and to the manager’s liking.
