As per the latest update from journalist Fabrizio Romano, David Raya, the Brentford goalkeeper has agreed personal terms with Arsenal.
The Spanish international has become a mainstay at the London club and impressed with his shot stopping and distribution skills. Known for this passing range and alert style of keeping, the 27-year-old was a big part of the Bees having such a strong season.
A few days ago, the Spaniard was linked with a transfer to the Gunners, and it looks like the move is gathering momentum. Romano said:
“Understand David Raya has reached an agreement in principle with Arsenal on personal terms. Brentford have been informed by player side that he wants to join Arsenal — and talks between clubs over formula/price are now expected to accelerate.”
With Matt Turner linked with a move away from the Emirates as Nottingham Forest are interested, this is a deal that can happen quickly.
Arsenal Fever View:
While a lot of fans may be questioning the logic behind getting another keeper who is equally good if not better than Aaron Ramsdale. But the main reason could be the fact that Mikel Arteta wants to have people competing for places.
Depth has been a major problem for the north Londoners for some time now and it is good to see the club take measures to rectify that. Though Turner is a fine keeper, his passing range is not as expansive.
So, to prevent a drop off in quality, it looks like the club are looking at Raya to come fill in that gap. And it is also a reminder to Ramsdale that his place is not guaranteed, and he will have to fight to earn it.
It can be safely said that not a lot of people were expecting this kind of investment in the squad from the Gunners. But having such depth can ensure that the quality of the team remains high regardless of who comes in or goes out from the playing eleven.
Arsenal probably did not need such a good keeper but by being proactive they are making sure to be ready for any potential situation. Having agreed personal terms, it could well be that the Emirates sees a new keeper before the start of the new season.
