It is now reported that Arsenal may be looking to bolster their already impressive attack with the signing of Sporting CP winger Gelson Martins.
The Express is reporting that the player is seriously considering terminating his contract after the recent training ground incident.
Some supporters attacked the Sporting training ground few weeks back ahead of their Portuguese Cup final injuring some players in the process. Reports have stated that multiple players are now seriously considering leaving the club, by terminating their contracts.
The report claims that Martins is looking to cancel his contract with the club and if he eventually does that then Arsenal can sign him on a free transfer this summer. The attacker has a €60m(£52.7m) release clause in his contract and it would be a huge bargain buy for the North London club if they could pull this off.
Making 47 appearances this season for Sporting, the 23-year-old has scored 11 goals and picked up 9 assists for the Portuguese side.
Prolific in front of goal but also rapid down the wing, Martins could be the perfect support player for Arsenal’s attacking pair of Aubameyang and Lacazette up front.
Sky Sports journalist Guillem Balague believes that the North London side could sell some players to balance the books but that Emery has not joined to change the whole team.
“Up until now, as everybody knows, everything had to go through Arsene Wenger but Unai Emery is happy to repeat the same position he has had at Sevilla, Valencia and PSG in which he was a head coach,” said Balague.
“This means – if it’s the same infrastructure – he can advise on what kind of players he needs and the club goes and gets them, for instance, and he won’t have much of a say in the amount of budget that’s needed. That will be down to the club.”
“He will do what he is the best at – maximise the potential of the side and take the players out of their comfort zone. He will try and put a different kind of training, an intense training, in place with the idea that it gets transmitted into the games.”
