Arsenal ready to break club-record to sign Jan Oblak

Arsene Wenger

Arsenal are reported to have made initial contact with Atletico Madrid as they seek to secure the signature of Jan Oblak at the end of the current campaign.

The Gunners have broken their transfer record in each of their previous two transfer windows, and they appear set to continue this trend as they seek to find a solid replacement for Petr Cech.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has decided to bolster the attacking department in the last two windows with the signings of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The new signings coincided with further good news with Mesut Ozil having committed his future to the club for another three years.

As a result, the focus is likely to switch to the other areas of the pitch during the summer, and the goalkeeping position appears one which the club are keen to solve prior to the start of the 2018/19 season.

According to AS, Arsenal’s head of football relations Raul Sanllehi has already had an initial word with Atletico Madrid regarding the services of shot-stopper Jan Oblak.

The 25-year-old has built a huge reputation for himself during his three-and-a-half seasons with Atleti, and it is suggested that the Gunners will have to trigger the £88m release clause in his contract in order to prise him away from the Spanish capital.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in the former Benfica man, but Arsenal are, for now, said to be favourites to pursue the Slovenian, provided they manage to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

At present, the Gunners are pretty much out of the running for Champions League qualification via the league phase, and winning the Europa League remains their best chance of getting a back-door entry into the elite competition next term.
