Arsenal have approached West Brom for Johnny Evans with a £10 million plus Debuchy offer, according to the Daily Star.
West Brom are well aware of the small fee they would receive for Evans if they get relegated, so it will be a good business for both clubs should it come off.
West Brom manager Alan Pardew confirmed that they might sell the defender at the right place. According to Evening Standard, he said:
Pardew added: “What I will confirm is what you already know, Jonny Evans is a target for other clubs, we might sell if the price is right, that’s that deal, everything else is pure speculation.”
What Arsenal need is a strong leader at the back to help shore up the defence, with Mertesacker set to call it a day at the end of the season.
So a player with experience, who can take charge, scream and shout, and basically be a proverbial brick wall should be top of Wenger’s’ shopping list. Evans certainly falls into that category rather perfectly.
Koscielny would benefit from someone coming into the team and taking some of the pressure off him. Basically, to add more stability to the defence.
Arsenal are quite strong in midfield and attack, it’s clean sheets they need right now if finishing inside the top four in the Premiership is to become a possibility.
Champions League football is a necessity to a club like Arsenal, never mind the financial side of things. Money is no good left in the bank gathering dust, it needs to be spent and spent wisely. Players don’t come much wiser than Evans.
It’s all very well bidding on striker’s but even a kid would point out that the prime suspect for Arsenal’s recent downfall is the defence. They can’ keep throwing away healthy leads and turning in shambolic defensive display. It all has a snowball effect, players become unhappy and look elsewhere for their rewards.
Let’s do whatever it takes to land Evans. He’s a seasoned professional and a leader. Every team needs a true leader.
