Bundesliga side Schalke 04 have confirmed their interest in pursuing Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, although a deal is highly unlikely during next summer’s transfer window.
The German footballer has just seven months of his present Arsenal deal, and this has intensified speculation over his next challenge – amid his reluctance to negotiate a contract extension.
In a report covered by Kicker h/t Evening Standard, Schalke chief Clemens Tonnies confirmed that the World Cup winner could be welcome back to the Veltins-Arena, but a move is unlikely to go through next term.
He said: “I still have a great relationship with Mesut. We would definitely consider it [a return]. If it fits for both sides, it would be nice. The player could say that he returns to his roots, and that he plays football in this stadium and for those fans and the region once again. But it will certainly not happen next season.”
Despite the transfer gossip, Arsene Wenger recently said that he wants the 29-year-old to stay put at the Emirates following a standout display in the 2-0 triumph over Tottenham in the north London derby, as per BBC Sport.
Aside from this, Barcelona are said to be eyeing a winter approach with Don Balon suggesting that they are prepared to offer Andre Gomes plus £20m to lure Ozil during the winter transfer window.
Ozil has been often criticised for his poor work rate on the pitch, but his showing in the games against Everton and Spurs clearly suggest his importance in the Gunners setup.
The trio of Sanchez, Ozil and Lacazette appear to have formed an impressive bond up top and Wenger will be hoping that the German pursues a new contract with Sanchez deemed to have made his mind up for a fresh challenge.
