With what we know of Arsene Wenger, it is safe to believe that Arsenal are very much unlikely to sign any more players this summer.
In a statement that may annoy many fans, the French boss has declared that he is ‘happy’ with the transfer business so far, while also suggesting that the ‘demanding’ market may mean that the Gunners might not bring in any new player.
The North London club were successful in bringing two quality players so far, Sead Kolasinac for free and Alexandre Lacazzette for a club record fee of £52 million. The duo have already impressed but the fans are eager to see more quality signings.
After the defeat at Stoke last weekend, there was hope that the French Boss may see the need to strengthen his squad further. In a twist, the long term manager claimed that his big squad have become ‘unmanageable’ and that his priority will be to sell and not to buy.
Earlier this week, reports suggested that Arsenal’s chance of finally landing prime target Thomas Lemar has been boosted.
However, Wenger was swift in dismissing the report and insisting that Monaco have shut the door already. He equally insisted that he is glad and contented with the deals he has concluded in terms of arrivals.
He was quoted by ESPN as saying: ‘I am very pleased with our market because we bought good players who can integrate with our style of play. That’s what we want. On the other hand, it is very difficult. Today, the prices are out of proportion. The transfer market has become very demanding today.’
He went further to say: ‘There is no transfer market anymore because the price depends only on the identity of the buyer and when you are English, you have straight away 50 percent on the price of a player and that makes it difficult to act.’
Knowing Wenger and his approach to things, this may be the perfect excuse to conclude the transfer period with only two signings.
He has already expressed his belief in the squad and it seems for the next few years he will be in charge, the excuse will shift from lack of players who could improve the squad to the claim that the market is too demanding.
For now, let’s just hope the existing players will step up their game
